We recorded 50 species among 182 mist net captures, 79 point count detections, and 476 incidental observations. These included 12 North American migrants and 38 permanent resident species, includ- ing 14 Hispaniolan endemics. The two sites showed similar overall diversity and abundance of birds. We confirmed the continued presence of globally endangered Black-capped Petrel ( Pterodroma hasitata ), locating at least four vocalizing birds during nocturnal surveys of cliffs along the Pic La Visite escarpment. We also confirmed Bicknell’s Thrush ( Catharus bicknelli ) at both sites, capturing seven individuals, and we mist-netted the first Swainson’s War- bler ( Limnothlypis swainsonii ) recorded for La Visite. We observed extensive human impacts on habitat throughout La Visite National Park. -

Cuba’s Western Mountains, Zapata Peninsula, Northern Archipelago, Escambray Valley and Havana Spring Migration Cuba Bird Survey November 9 – 18/19, 2018 You are invited on an exclusive, U.S. led and managed birding program to Cuba! The program is managed by the Caribbean Conservation Trust, Inc. (CCT), which is based in Connecticut. In early 2018 CCT staff began their 22nd year of managing bird conservation and natural history programs in Cuba. Along with CCT Ornithologist Michael Good, our team will include award -winning Cuban artist, author, and naturalist Nils Navarro, a bilingual Cuban tour leader and local naturalists in 4 different birding regions. They will guide you through some of the best bird habitat in Cuba, the Caribbean’s largest and most ecologically diverse island nation. CCT designed this itinerary to take you to Cuba’s finest bird habitats, most beautiful national parks, diverse biosphere reserves, and unique natural areas. We will interact with local scientists and naturalists who work in research and conservation. In addition to birding, we will learn about the ecology and history of regions we visit. Finally, and especially given the ongoing changes in U.S. – Cuban relations, we can expect some degree of inquiry into fascinating aspects of Cuban culture, history, and daily living during our visit. Cuba’s Birds According to BirdLife International, which has designated 28 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in Cuba, “Over 370 bird species have been recorded in Cuba, including 27 which are endemic to the island and 29 considered globally threatened. Due to it’s large land area and geographical position within the Caribbean, Cuba represents one of the most important countries for Neotropical migratory birds – both birds passing through on their way south (75 species) and those spending the winter on the island (86 species).“ Our itinerary provides opportunities to see many of Cuba’s endemic species and subspecies, as listed below. -

Hernandez Abstract Burgeoning human populations have created many challenges for conservation of biodiversity, as ever-larger areas of land are converted to agricultural and other forms of production. Protected reserves alone are not sufficient to sustain biodiversity in a world of increasing human needs, so it is necessary to understand the extent to which biodiversity can exist with- in highly altered, agricultural ecosystems. From 11 May to 8 August 2013, bird diversity was surveyed at an agricultural site on Hispaniola, utilized mainly for pasture, and the population and regeneration potential of the royal palm (Roystonea borinquena), a key nest tree species for two abundant bird species, was assessed. The site harbored 33 bird species including 32 resident species (about one-third of Hispaniola’s low-elevation resident land bird species), of which 5 are endemic to Hispaniola. Two of these endemic species, the Palmchat (Dulus dominicus) and the Hispaniolan Woodpecker (Melanerpes striatus), were the pre- dominant species present. Seventy-six percent of species at this site showed an association with trees. The royal palm occurred mainly in wooded riparian corridors, but showed little ability to colonize pastures, suggesting possible declines in future overall tree density at this site. Ensuring adequate tree recruitment is crucial to maintaining biodiversity in agricultural and grazing zones. -

Jansen1 and Jérôme Fuchs2 Abstract The results of archival and collection research into the expedition led by Nicolas-Thomas Baudin in 1796–1798 to Tenerife, St. Thomas, St. Croix, and Puerto Rico are herein presented. The expedition brought home at least 296 specimens and was the first to collect in St. Thomas, St. Croix, and Puerto Rico. Of these, at least 140 specimens still survive, the largest sin- gle-voyage collection from pre-1800 still available. Accounts of these specimens and those known to have vanished are present- ed here for the first time, adding to our knowledge of early Caribbean ornithology. The arguments of David K. Wetherbee (1985, 1986) that thefts by the Baudin expedition took place during a foray into Hispaniola are all shown to be suspect. Molecular and morphological work identified a Barn Owl Tyto( alba ssp) supposedly collected in Puerto Rico, thus providing the first possible documentation of the Barn Owl in Puerto Rico, but its exact taxonomic status remains unresolved. Our data thus cannot exclude the genuine Puerto Rican origin for this specimen. The Relationships of the Silky Flycatchers
THE RELATIONSHIPS OF THE SILKY FLYCATCHERS CI-IARLES G. SIBLE¾ THE silky flycatchersinclude the generaPtilogonys, Phainopepla, and Phainoptila,which are usuallytreated either as a family, Ptilogonatidae (e.g. Wetmore 1960), or as a subfamily of the waxwing family Bomby- cillidae (e.g. Greenway1960). Someauthors have includedthe Palm Chat (Dulus dominicus)of Hispaniola and the Grey Hypocolius (Hypocolius ampelinus) of Iraq and Iran in the Bombycillidae (Arvey 1951, Mayr and Amadon1951). Othershave consideredsome of theseallocations to be tentative or unproved and have recognizedseparate families for some or all of these groups (e.g. Wetmore 1960, Greenway 1960). The silky flycatchersare confinedto North and Central America. The Phainopepla(Phainopepla nitens) occursin the arid and semiaridregions of the southwestern United States and in Mexico south to Puebla and Vera Cruz. The Gray Silky Flycatcher (Ptilogonyscinereus) is a montane speciesranging from northwesternand easternMexico to Guatemala. The Long-tailedSilky Flycatcher(P. caudatus)and the Black-and-yellowSilky Flycatcher (Phainoptilamelanoxantha) are eachendemic to the highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama. This paper reviews some of the taxonomichistory and charactersof the silky flycatchersand presentsnew evidencefrom studies of the egg- white proteins indicating that they are closely related to the genus Myadestes,the solitaires,of the thrushfamily Turdidae. The two species of the genusEntomodestes of northwesternSouth America may be part of this natural cluster,but their egg whites have not been available for comparison. This chapter treats adult thrasher survival, longevity, short- and long-range natal dispersal of the young, including the intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of natal dispersers, and a comparison of the field techniques used in monitoring the spatiotemporal aspects of dispersal, e.g., observations, biotelemetry, and banding. Rounding out the chapter are some of the inherent and ecological factors influencing immature thrashers’ survival and dispersal, e.g., preferred habitat, diet, season, ectoparasites, and the effects of two major hurricanes, which resulted in food shortages following both disturbances. Annual Survival Rates (Rain-Forest Population) In the early 1990s, the tenet that tropical birds survive much longer than their north temperate counterparts, many of which are migratory, came into question (Karr et al. 1990). Whether or not the dogma can survive, however, awaits further empirical evidence from additional studies. -
