Schade, Ph.D. ii Abstract In my dissertation “Atomic Apocalypse – ‘Nuclear Fiction’ in German Literature and Culture,” I investigate the portrayal of the nuclear age and its most dreaded fantasy, the nuclear apocalypse, in German fictionalizations and cultural writings. My selection contains texts of disparate natures and provenance: about fifty plays, novels, audio plays, treatises, narratives, films from 1946 to 2009. I regard these texts as a genre of their own and attempt a description of the various elements that tie them together. The fascination with the end of the world that high and popular culture have developed after 9/11 partially originated from the tradition of nuclear fiction since 1945. The Cold War has produced strong and lasting apocalyptic images in German culture that reject the traditional biblical apocalypse and that draw up a new worldview. In particular, German nuclear fiction sees the atomic apocalypse as another step towards the technical facilitation of genocide, preceded by the Jewish Holocaust with its gas chambers and ovens. -

Zu Ehren der II. Parteikonferenz erfolgt hier die erste Mitteilung über drei dieser nach eingehender Forschungsarbeit ermittelten Dokumente. Von besonderem Interesse für die Berliner Studienzeit des jungen Karl Marx sind die Akten, die sich im Archivkeller der Registraturkanzlei der Hum- boldt-Universität feststellen ließen. Der Assistent am Institut für die Ge- schichte des deutschen Volkes an der Humboldt-Universität, Günther Rose, förderte bei der Ausführung eines Forschungsauftrages, den ihm der Direktor des Instituts, Genosse Prof. Dr. Kamnitzer, erteilt hatte, aus den Tausenden, zum Teil durch Feuchtigkeit schwer mitgenommenen Bündeln einen vergilbten Band aus dem Jahre 1841 ans Tageslicht, der die An- und Abmeldungspapiere des stud. jur. K. H. Marx aus Trier enthält. Wenn diese Blätter auch schon früher einmal eingesehen und zum Teil in der Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe (I, 1, 2, 247) schon abgedruckt worden sind,1 so war bisher doch der von Marx selbst geschriebene Anmeldungsbogen übersehen worden.2 In der charakteri- stischen, energischen, nach rechts gestellten Schrift geben die drei Folioseiten – von denen wir zwei reproduzieren – Auskunft über die Vorlesungen, die Marx während seines fast fünfjährigen Aufenthaltes in Berlin gehört hat; in der rechten Spalte befinden sich die Zensuren der Dozenten. -

His book represents a very serious piece of scholarship and is interesting to read. It excels with a novel hypothesis, a very careful use of varied archival sources, and an ability not to lose his argument in the wealth of material. Helga Haftendorn, Free University, Berlin Petri Hakkarainen I don’t know of any other book that deals so thoroughly with German CSCE policy in the years described here…The author has done a vast amount of research, using documents from different archives and different countries…While he is of course not the first scholar to write about the origins of the CSCE, the author does contribute new elements and interpretations to the topic. Benedikt Schönborn, University of Tampere, Centre for Advanced Study From the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s West German foreign policy underwent substantial transformations: from bilateral to multilateral, from reactive to proactive. The Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) was an ideal setting for this evolution, enabling A StateofPeaceinEurope the Federal Republic to take the lead early on in Western preparations for the conference and to play a decisive role in the actual East–West negotiations leading to the Helsinki Final Act of 1975. -

THE TRAGEDY OF MARX AND JUSTICE: A CRITIQUE OF MARX’S FAILED ATTEMPT TO DISPENSE WITH PRINCIPLES OF JUSTICE PAUL CHRISTOPHER GRAY A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN POLITICAL SCIENCE YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO April 2016 © Paul Christopher Gray, 2016 Abstract In The Tragedy of Marx and Justice: A Critique of Marx’s Failed Attempt to Dispense with Principles of Justice, I critique Marx’s belief that his theory of history, as well as the socialist society it would help to bring about, are beyond the need for justice. Although there have been three waves of debate about the relation between Marxism and ethics (1890-1900s; 1950-70s; 1970-90s), no one has yet provided the definitive interpretation of Marx on the question of justice. Furthermore, each of these debates ended in the same basic impasse between consequentialism and deontology, both of which Marx explicitly rejects. This occurred for three reasons. First, they misinterpreted Marx’s immanent critique, which demonstrates how capitalism systematically contradicts its own principles. I explore Marx’s use of this method with regard to principles of justice. Second, they not only neglected the use of immanent critique in Marx, but also of Marx. They do not critique him according to his own standards. They fail to subject Marx to a historical materialist critique which roots his evasive relation to justice in the transformations of the theory and practice of justice in the transitions to capitalism. I discuss the major aspects of these transformations, the most important of which is the devaluation of justice relative to the ethical systems of non-capitalist class societies.
