Social Work Competencies The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) has established core competencies for social work education that span the classroom and field in the 2008 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS). The 41 core practice behaviors associated with the competencies operationally define each competency. There is one advanced practice behavior for each of the thirteen core competencies, for each of the four practice method concentrations, for a total of 52 advanced practice behaviors across the curriculum. Foundation Practice Behaviors 2.1 Recognize and manage personal values in a way that allows professional values to guide practice. 2.2 Make ethical decisions by applying standards of the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics (NASW, 2008) and, as applicable, of the International Federation of Social Workers/International Association of Schools of Social Work Ethics in Social Work, Statement of Principles (IFSW, 2004). 2.3 Tolerate ambiguity in resolving ethical conflicts. 2.4 Apply strategies of ethical reasoning to arrive at principled decisions. Foundation Practice Behaviors 4.1 Recognize the extent to which a culture’s structures and values may oppress, marginalize, alienate, or create or enhance privilege and power. 4.2 Gain sufficient self-awareness to eliminate the influence of personal biases and values in working with diverse groups. 4.3 Recognize and communicate their understanding of the importance of difference in shaping life experiences. 4.4 View themselves as learners and engage those with whom they work as informants. Advanced Practice Behaviors by Concentration PB# CONCENTRATION ADVANCED PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 4.CO Community Organization Understand one’s own social and cultural locations within society and related identities and group memberships, and how these relate to working with others at the community level. 4.IP Interpersonal Practice Identify and assess the effects of race/ethnicity, national origin, gender, age, height, weight, marital status, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, immigration status, faith/spirituality, veteran status, and the joint and interacting effects of these identities on the client, worker, and client-worker relationship. 4.MHS Management of Human Services Demonstrate knowledge of management issues regarding human diversity and social inclusion in human service organizations and the communities they serve. 4.SPE Social Policy and Evaluation Address diversity (as indicated above), promote equity, and reduce disparity in the consumption, production, and dissemination of knowledge in research, policy analysis and advocacy, and evaluation. Speer Vanderbilt University Community organizing—a field of practice in which residents collaboratively in- vestigate and undertake sustained collective action regarding social issues of mutual concern—has often proven an effective method for achieving changes in policies and systems at local, regional, and even national scales. The field is dynamic. It has expanded and has undergone numerous changes over re- cent decades. Research from a variety of disciplines has documented, evalu- ated, and informed many of these changes. This article scrutinizes the evolv- ing field of community organizing, with a particular focus on the current state of social and psychological research on broad-based community orga- nizing processes and outcomes. These findings include not only the effects of community organizing efforts on policies and systems, but also the influences of community organizing on psychological changes among the people and groups who participate. These findings are incorporated into recommendations for poli- cies, practices, and future research. Introduction Community organizing is an umbrella term for a field of practice in which residents collaboratively investigate and take collective action regarding social issues of mutual concern.
