Smith Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University, Nottingham NG1 4BU, United Kingdom Abstract Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine how and why outsiders, rather than incumbents, are able to take advantage of technological discontinuities. Design/ methodology/approach – The paper employs a case study of a single innovation that transformed the technology of Formula 1 motor racing. Findings – The findings show how social capital made up of ‘weak ties’ in the form of informal personal networks, enabled an outsider to successfully make the leap to a new technological regime. Practical implications – The findings show that where new product development involves a shift to new technologies, social capital can have an important part to play. Originality/value – It is widely accepted that radical innovations are often competence destroying, making it difficult for incumbents to make the transition to a new technology. The findings show how the social capital of outsiders can place them at a particular advantage in utilizing new technologies. Keywords: Innovation; Outsiders; Social Capital; Technological Discontinuities; Paper type Research paper Biographical note: David Smith is Professor of Innovation Management at Nottingham BusinesPostprints School, Nottingham Trent University, Nottingham NG1 4BU UK. Introduction Studies of a number of industry sectors (Christensen, 1997) have shown that radical innovations are significantly more likely to originate with firms that are outsiders rather than industry incumbents, especially if the innovations involve competence destroying rather than competence enhancing technological discontinuities.

The Lotus 79 with full ground effects was unbeatable , almost 3 seconds a lap quicker ahead of its rivals so Brabham designer Gordon Murray designed a car which due to its wide flat twelve Alfa engine could not copy the Lotus twin skirts but instead had a massive fan which was supposed to cool the engine but in fact sucked so much air from under the car that the thing stuck to the road. Both drivers were told in practice and qualifying to drive at eight tenths as Gordon wanted to surprise Lotus in the race. Although Watson dropped out Lauda won the race by over 30 seconds . • Adaptation at Full Speed - Regulatory Changes in Fast Moving Industries Karin Hoisl University of Munich Management [email protected]
Paper to be presented at the DRUID 2011 on INNOVATION, STRATEGY, and STRUCTURE - Organizations, Institutions, Systems and Regions at Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, June 15-17, 2011 Adaptation at Full Speed - Regulatory Changes in Fast Moving Industries Karin Hoisl University of Munich Management [email protected] Abstract Prior research provides rich insights into the mechanisms to enhance an organization?s ability to adapt. Even though human resources have been found to play a key role to enable organizations to reply to environmental opportunities and threats, evidence at the individual level is scarce. A comprehensive understanding of the determinants of adaptation is particularly important in fast moving industries, where organizations typically do not get a second chance to make up for a failure to adapt. This paper aims at filling this research gap. It uses a unique data set on Formula One motorsport constructors. A pre-post experimental design with exogenous regulatory change allows for the operationalization of adaptation as well as a causal interpretation of the results. The findings indicate that whereas domain-specific experience at the level of the individual decreases the adaptive ability of an organization, experience from moderately distant technological fields increases it. To exploit experience from more distant fields, absorptive capacity is needed. Additionally, results provide first evidence that learning matters with respect to the determinants of adaptation. Jelcodes:O32,- Adaptation at Full Speed – Regulatory Changes in Fast Moving Industries 1 INTRODUCTION Although understanding the determinants of adaptation looks back on a long tradition, it is still in the focus of research (Lawrence and Lorsch, 1967; Chakravarthy, 1982; Meyer, 1982; Ginsberg and Buchholtz, 1990; Ganesh et al., 2004).
