We have survived two world wars but we have been flattened by this pandemic! Despite an amazing £80, 000 raised from last year’s crowd funder and a very generous rent break from the landlords we find ourselves facing the merde hitting the fan, if you will pardon my French! To paraphrase Dan Farson, between the crisis and the catastrophe there is always time for a glass of champagne..and some fabulous, FABULOUS art! We are so lucky to be the meeting and stomping ground for so many hugely talented artists.

Gentlemen's club - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentlemen's_club From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A gentlemen's club is a members-only private club originally set up by and for British upper class men in the 18th century, and popularised by English upper-middle class men and women in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Today, some clubs are more accommodating about the gender and social status of their members. Many countries outside the United Kingdom have prominent gentlemen's clubs, mostly those associated with the British Empire, in particular, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have enthusiastically taken up the practice, and have a thriving club scene. Today, the area of St James's is still sometimes called "clubland". Clubs took over the role occupied by coffee houses in 18th century London to some degree, and reached the height of their influence in the late 19th century. The first clubs, such as White's, Brooks's and Boodle's, were aristocratic in flavour, and provided an environment for gambling, which was illegal outside of members-only establishments. The 19th century brought an explosion in the popularity of clubs, particularly around the decade of the 1880s.

EMSP 15 Document A 1 Now Britain's Men-Only Clubs Have to Let in the Ladies It was an unlikely venue for a civil rights sit-in. But on Oct. 1, Lady Antonia Fraser, the formidable Anglo-Irish author and widow of playwright Harold Pinter, walked into the Garrick Club — a plush, “gentlemen-only” member's club in London's West End — and took a seat at 5 the hallowed center table in the coffee room. For its 179-year history, the table had been reserved for men. But there was nothing the members could do to stop Lady Antonia's defiance. Britain's new Equality Act — a law that prohibits establishments from discrimination based on gender — is forcing the country's male-dominated social clubs to overturn many of their cherished traditions. 10 London's oak-paneled, leather-chaired, jackets-and-ties-only gentlemen's clubs have long been a refuge for the country's ruling class.
