Searching for New States of Being: The Cultural Energies and Contested Spaces of Colin MacInnes’s London Sam Wiseman (University of Potsdam, Germany) The Literary London Journal, Volume 12 Number 1–2 (Spring/Autumn 2015) Abstract: This article examines Colin MacInnes’s (1914–76) ‘London trilogy’—City of Spades (1957), Absolute Beginners (1959) and Mr Love and Justice (1960)—in terms of their representation of subcultures (gay, ethnic minority and teenage)—within the welfare capitalist society of postwar London. It initially considers MacInnes’s attempts to contextualise the experience of these subcultural groups alongside new developments in urban planning and social organisation. I then go on to analyse the role of MacInnes’s specific narrative approaches in tackling this problem, discussing the tension between his journalistic and romantic literary inclinations. The final section considers the presence of competing cultural energies within the London presented in these three novels and the sense of subterranean and historical forces at work. Finally, I conclude that the trilogy ultimately draws its strength from the combination of transition, liminality and vital energy which MacInnes’s tapestry of characters and subcultures provides. Keywords: Colin MacInnes, postwar Britain, London, place, postcolonialism, teenagers, queer fiction Introduction Colin MacInnes is, in several ways, a figure whose identity and existence embodies transience, liminality, marginality and transgression. Born in London in 1914, his early years were overshadowed by war; in 1917 his parents divorced, and his mother Angela (herself a prolific novelist) married an Australian, George Thirkell. The family moved to Australia in 1920, and MacInnes lived there for ten formative years before moving to Brussels at the age of sixteen. -

HENS LAY, PEOPLE LIE A Novel and an Exegesis Beyond Epistolarity: The Warp, the Weft and the Loom Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Glenice Joy Whitting Swinburne University of Technology Faculty of Higher Education, Lilydale 2012 Abstract This thesis is comprised of two components: 'Hens Lay, People Lie', a novel, and an exegesis, Beyond Epistolarity the Warp, the Weft and the Loom. Together they propose that 'creative epistolarity', namely imaginative writing with factual material, including personal letters, emails and journals, provides women with a safe space where knowledge can be intuited, articulated or performed. In this space, women find their own creative voice, write their stories and in turn, understand themselves. 'Hens Lay, People Lie' draws heavily on the epistolary genre but aims to move beyond that genre by using an auto/biographical and creative epistolary style better suited to reveal emotion and character. The novel illustrates that creative epistolarity intersects with feminism and postmodernism and is uniquely placed to empower women to write their stories. The exegesis discusses theories, methodologies, fictional techniques and creative decisions made during the writing of the novel. Key writerly choices are examined: the choice of an epistolary novel and the importance of creative epistolarity as a way of knowing the self as well as production of knowledge. The research process is practice-led research informed by personal correspondence and personal history in the autoethnographic mode. The exegesis presents a reflective examination of existing works in the genre of epistolary fiction and calls on the practices of exponents of the epistolary form such as Elizabeth Jolley, Nancy Turner and Lionel Shriver. -

Butt & K. Tillotson, and others think that Dickens revised the role of Edith in the original plan of Dombey and Son upon the advice of a friend. I tend to believe that Dickens's swerve from his course was prompted by two motives, his relish for grand scenes, and his endeavour to engage the reader's sympathies for a character who was a victim of a social practice which he was trying to condemn. Dickens's humanitarian attitude sought to redeem the sinner and condemn the sin. In engaging the reader's sympathies, Dickens had entrapped his own. Both Edith and Alice are shown as victims of rapacious mothers who sell anything, or anybody for money. While Good Mrs Brown sells Alice's virtue and innocence for cash, Mrs Skewton trades on Edith's beauty in the marriage market to secure fortune and a good establishment. Edith and Alice's maturity and moral growth and their scorn and anger at their mothers' false teaching come in line with public prudery. -

Ritgerð til B.A.-prófs Arnar Ásmundsson Kt.: 230476-4389 Leiðbeinandi: Ingibjörg Ágústsdóttir Maí 2011 Abstract In 1995 Nick Hornby published his first novel, High Fidelity, a story about obsession, love and the complications of modern life. Hornby published Juliet, Naked in 2009, where he tackles similar topics to those in High Fidelity. A key difference between these novels is the presence of the Internet in Juliet, Naked, which is not featured in High Fidelity. A comparison of Juliet, Naked and High Fidelity offers an interesting insight into Hornby‟s vision of life before and after the spread of the Internet, and how it has affected the characters‟ obsessions, communication and their lives in general. This essay is, however, not limited to the changes the Internet has brought, as other topics are discussed in the essay‟s several chapters. The first chapter is a general introduction and is followed by a chapter containing background information on both Hornby and the novels, as well as illustrating how these novels were received by critics. The third chapter tackles a dominant theme in both books, obsession, especially male obsession with popular culture. The ensuing chapter deals with love and its complications, and how it is presented in both novels. The fifth chapter focuses on the Internet and the benefits and limitations it brings to modern life. -
This Episode Appeared As Part of a Series of Three Devoted to the Cultural Revolution That Occurred in Britain in the Years Between the Wars
Newsletter_42.1 This episode appeared as part of a series of three devoted to the cultural revolution that occurred in Britain in the years between the wars. The first dealt with architecture and design, with a focus on Art Deco and modernism, the third with the influence of Hollywood films on British culture. The second was devoted to the so-called Bright Young People of the 1920s. Presenters included Philip Hoare (biographer of Stephen Tennant), Selina Hastings (biographer of Evelyn Waugh and Nancy Mitford), Lucy Moore (author of Anything Goes: A Biography of the Roaring Twenties) and D. J. Taylor (author of a cultural survey entitled The Bright Young People). Indeed, Taylor’s book (reviewed in EWNS 41.2 and 39.1) seems to have been the basis for the program’s script, which follows his description and interpretation of participants in the BYP and their cultural/historical importance. No scriptwriter is mentioned in the credits. The program follows the careers of three participants in the BYP (Stephen Tennant, Elizabeth Ponsonby and Brenda Dean Paul) and two observers and chroniclers of that movement (Evelyn Waugh and Cecil Beaton). The three examples of BYPs were all from well-established upper-class families. Philip Hoare provides most of the narrative on Stephan Tennant, whose primary talent seems to have been drawing attention to himself as a thing of beauty. Nancy Mitford drew heavily on Tennant for her character Cedric Hampton in Love in a Cold Climate and The Pursuit of Love, and Caroline Blackwood compared him to David Bowie (unfair because Bowie can sing).
