SUPLEMENTO Ideas, I, 1 (2020) 51 From Free Cinema to British New Wave: A Story of Angry Young Men Diego Brodersen* Introduction In February 1956, a group of young film-makers premiered a programme of three documentary films at the National Film Theatre (now the BFI Southbank). Lorenza Mazzetti, Lindsay Anderson, Karel Reisz and Tony Richardson thought at the time that “no film can be too personal”, and vehemently said so in their brief but potent manifesto about Free Cinema. Their documentaries were not only personal, but aimed to show the real working class people in Britain, blending the realistic with the poetic. Three of them would establish themselves as some of the most inventive and irreverent British filmmakers of the 60s, creating iconoclastic works –both in subject matter and in form– such as Saturday Day and Sunday Morning, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner and If… Those were the first significant steps of a New British Cinema. They were the Big Screen’s angry young men. What is British cinema? In my opinion, it means many different things. National cinemas are much more than only one idea. I would like to begin this presentation with this question because there have been different genres and types of films in British cinema since the beginning. So, for example, there was a kind of cinema that was very successful, not only in Britain but also in America: the films of the British Empire, the films about the Empire abroad, set in faraway places like India or Egypt. Such films celebrated the glory of the British Empire when the British Empire was almost ending. -

Mgr. Věra Eliášová, Ph.D. Michal Břenek 1 Annotation This bachelor thesis focuses on the analysis of supernatural elements in the stories The White People and The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen and The Willows by Algernon Blackwood used by authors to achieve psychological impacts on readers and closely examining the origin of these elements taking into consideration authors' background and attitudes. In the first part I briefly introduce the authors as well as their opinions and background that influenced their writing while the second part is dedicated to explanations of plots and analyses of the elements in detail. Anotace Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na rozbor nadpřirozených prvků v povídkách Bílí lidé a Velký Bůh Pan Arthura Machena a v povídce Vrby Algernona Blackwooda, které autoři použili pro dosažení psychologického dopadu na čtenáře a také na původ těchto prvků s ohledem na postoje a minulost obou autorů. This Episode Appeared As Part of a Series of Three Devoted to the Cultural Revolution That Occurred in Britain in the Years Between the Wars
Newsletter_42.1 This episode appeared as part of a series of three devoted to the cultural revolution that occurred in Britain in the years between the wars. The first dealt with architecture and design, with a focus on Art Deco and modernism, the third with the influence of Hollywood films on British culture. The second was devoted to the so-called Bright Young People of the 1920s. Presenters included Philip Hoare (biographer of Stephen Tennant), Selina Hastings (biographer of Evelyn Waugh and Nancy Mitford), Lucy Moore (author of Anything Goes: A Biography of the Roaring Twenties) and D. J. Taylor (author of a cultural survey entitled The Bright Young People). Indeed, Taylor’s book (reviewed in EWNS 41.2 and 39.1) seems to have been the basis for the program’s script, which follows his description and interpretation of participants in the BYP and their cultural/historical importance. No scriptwriter is mentioned in the credits. The program follows the careers of three participants in the BYP (Stephen Tennant, Elizabeth Ponsonby and Brenda Dean Paul) and two observers and chroniclers of that movement (Evelyn Waugh and Cecil Beaton). The three examples of BYPs were all from well-established upper-class families. Philip Hoare provides most of the narrative on Stephan Tennant, whose primary talent seems to have been drawing attention to himself as a thing of beauty. Nancy Mitford drew heavily on Tennant for her character Cedric Hampton in Love in a Cold Climate and The Pursuit of Love, and Caroline Blackwood compared him to David Bowie (unfair because Bowie can sing). -

Gemović* University of Novi Sad Faculty of Philosophy FROM CAPTIVITY TO BESTIALITY: FEMINIST SUBVERSION OF FAIRY-TALE FEMALE CHARACTERS IN ANGELA CARTER’S “THE TIGER’S BRIDE” Abstract: This paper elaborates on Angela Carter‟s subversion of the fairy-tale genre in the tale from The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories titled “The Tiger‟s Bride”. The method of research combines researching relevant theoretical literature and thorough text analysis. The primary concern of this paper is the subversion of female characters in fairy tales as a means of advocating feminist attitudes. Relevant passages are used to exemplify Carter‟s feminism, with special reference to the subverted roles of the heroine of the tale. The female protagonist‟s transition from being a captive to becoming a beast is analysed, and her reinvented roles discussed and compared to the traits of the heroine from the classic Beauty and the Beast story written by De Beaumont. This is done in order to uncover the multilayered structure of Carter‟s work and hopefully determine the author‟s genuine purpose in subverting the fairy-tale genre as well as the message she wanted to convey. Urban Space, Singularity and Networks 26 10.2478/abcsj-2020-0003 Urban Space, Singularity and Networks in Laura Del-Rivo’s The Furnished Room (1961) NICOLAS TREDELL University of Sussex & Palgrave Macmillan, Great Britain Abstract This essay explores the representation of interior and exterior urban space in Laura Del-Rivo’s novel The Furnished Room (1961) through the lenses of singularity and networking, which are proposed as preferable alternatives to notions such as individuality and community, especially in the analysis of city life and literature. The essay examines portrayals of four kinds of urban space in the novel – the furnished room, the office, the café and the street – which seem to offer escapes from the perceived constrictions of the family home, the suburb and the Church. It analyses the novel’s sensory evocations of such urban spaces, especially through smell and sight. The essay also considers how the narrative conveys the enticements of the abstract and impersonal network of money. It relates these elements to its young male protagonist, an existentialist (anti-)hero who suffers from a recurrent sense of unreality and who seeks a more sustained version of the greater intensity glimpsed in epiphanies, privileged moments in which the world seems temporarily transfigured into a visionary space. The essay suggests that the novel respects but questions his quest by dramatizing his wrong choices and by ending with a view of urban space given over to women and children. The Bluestocking Salons of Eighteenth-Century Britain

Mahmudul Hasan I enjoyed reading my teacher and mentor Fakrul Alam's “The Literary Club of 18th-Century London” (Daily Star, 20 August 2018). Referring to our age-old practice of having literary addas (chatting circles) and London's “The Club” better known as “Literary Club” which Samuel Johnson (1709-84) and Joshua Reynolds (1723-92) founded in 1764, he pointed to a comparable literary tradition of Bengal and Britain. It is believed that Johnson was inspired by Francis Bacon's precept that “reading makes a full man, conversation a ready man, and writing an exact man” and used to devote “most attention to how to communicate useful and pleasurable knowledge successfully.” So mainly because of Johnson's witticisms, sense of humour and the entertaining conversations of the Club, it received wide coverage in the national and international media of the time. Johnson's and Reynolds' Club attracted other great writers such as Adam Smith (1723-90), Oliver Goldsmith (1728-74), Edward Gibbon (1737-94) and James Boswell (1740-95). However, the fact remains that it was an all-male circle of interlocutors. The title of Professor Alam's essay stirred in me an anticipation that it would touch on the eighteenth-century bluestocking circles which were perhaps equally vibrant. It did not do so, to which I drew his attention.
