Linda Bellos had been invited by the Beard Society at Peterhouse College and sent a list of dates — which were withdrawn after she said she would be “publicly questioning some of the trans politics . which seems to assert the power of those who were previously designated male to tell lesbians, and especially lesbian feminists, what to say and think”. Ailish Maroof, the co-president of the society, which describes itself as a “gender and feminism” group, replied: “I’m sorry but we’ve decided not to host you. I too believe in freedom of expression, however Peterhouse is as much a home as it is a college. The welfare of our students in this instance has to come first.” The prospect of laws to let men redefine their gender without a physical transition and then gain access to changing rooms and women’s refuges has angered many. “I’m not being told by someone who a few months ago was a man what I as a woman can or cannot do,” Bellos said. SmartNews Keeping you current Officials say they want all passengers to feel welcome on the Underground (Matt Brown/Flickr CC BY 2.0) By Brigit Katz smithsonian.com July 13, 2017 In a bid to foster a more inclusive commuting experience, the London Underground is making a change to the way it addresses passengers. As Danny Boyle of the Telegraph reports, transit officials have decided to boot “ladies and gentlemen” from announcements on the Tube, opting instead for gender-neutral greetings. Underground staff have been instructed to begin their announcements with phrases like, “Hello, everyone” and “Good morning everyone.” The transit organization Transport for London (TfL) writes that “Ladies and Gentlemen” has also been scrapped from pre-recorded announcements. 1 of 2 7/18/2017 10:22 AM London Tube Scraps “Ladies and Gentlemen” Announcements | Smart ... http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/london-tube-scraps-ladies-... Mark Evers, director of customer strategy at TfL, says in a statement that the change was made because the organization wants "everyone to feel welcome on our transport network.” "We have reviewed the language that we use in announcements and elsewhere and will make sure that it is fully inclusive, reflecting the great diversity of London," he added. The plan to introduce gender-neutral greetings on the Underground was first announced in December 2016, after a transgender woman was mocked by transit staff. As Lucy Pasha-Robinson reported for the Independent at the time of the incident, 19-year-old Aimee Challenor was told that she “didn’t sound like a Miss” during a call to a TfL helpline.

The letter condemns the transphobia that led the parade during Pride in London 2018, it calls for a full apology from Pride in London, it also calls for a change in the Board at Pride in London, to ensure that the failings that allowed the horrific exclusionary behaviour that was front and centre on Saturday never happens again. There are signatories with long histories of campaigning for Equality, and there are signatories from members of the community who are in the closet.
