Each publication has a set of rules, sometimes written, sometimes unwritten, that governs what that publication considers to be a truthful and faithful representation of images to the public. These rules cover a wide range of topics such as how a photographer should act while taking pictures, what he or she can and can’t photograph, and whether and how an image can be altered in the darkroom or on the computer. -

" ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to explore the potential of newspaper blogs to foster a sense of community among readers and if so, whether this has an effect on their reading behavior. An online survey was conducted among the readers of the Houston Chronicle news blogs. The participants were asked to respond to twelve statements in order to determine their sense of community, as well as answering questions about their reading behavior and demographics. Findings suggest that blogs are a viable tool for newspapers to create a sense of community among the readers. Additionally, the results suggest some correlation between sense of community and reading behavior. However, further research is needed to determine the nature of this relationship. Framing of corporate crises in Dutch newspaper articles A corpus study on crisis response strategies, quotation, and metaphorical frames T.J.A. Nederstigt Program: MA International Business Communication Framing of corporate crises in Dutch media Abstract Research topic - The purpose of this study was to find answers to how corporate crises are framed in Dutch media. A journalist frames a crisis by making choices about information, quotation, and language. This thesis focusses on these aspects by analysing what crisis response strategies can be found, and how this information is reported by the journalist using quotation and metaphor. Hypotheses and research – It was expected that a company’s cultural background would influence the crisis response strategy that is reported in the newspapers. The hypotheses stated that companies originating from countries with an individualistic culture appear in newspapers more often with a diminish strategy and less often with a no response or rebuild strategy than companies originating from countries with a collectivistic culture. The denial strategy was expected to appear equally frequent. Furthermore, it was studied whether a link exists between these crisis response strategies and the occurrence of quotes and metaphors within Dutch newspaper articles. Method – These topics were studied using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods. A corpus of Dutch newspaper articles (N = 606) covering corporate crises was analysed. Findings – No significant relation was found between the reported crisis response strategies and companies’ cultural backgrounds (individualistic or collectivistic). A relationship was found between the reported crisis response strategy and (in)direct quotation of the company in crisis. -

The study expounded on four areas – the operational changes weekly newspapers have had to make to produce Web editions, the different type of newsroom staff that are needed to create both editions, the content that is going in the online edition, and the financial pressures that editors work through to keep the newspapers profitable. -

If there is no such newspaper, or if the decedent did not reside in a city, or if the property is not located in a city, then notice shall be published in a newspaper of general circulation in the county which is circulated within the area of the county in which the decedent resided or the property is located. If there is no such newspaper, notice shall be published in a newspaper of general circulation published in a newspaper of general circulation published in this state nearest to the county seat of the county in which the decedent resided or the property is located, and which is circulated within the area of the county in which the decedent resided or the property is located. Chapter 6 News online: Uses, perceptions and displacement effects over time Ester de Waal and Klaus Schoenbach Manuscript submitted for publication Abstract This study examines changes in the profile of online news users, their uses and perceptions of online news and eventually how this affects the use of traditional media between 2002 and 2005 in the Netherlands by means of a two-wave panel survey. Findings indicate that online news users have become more mainstream in some ways, but also more distinct in others. The analyses reveal interesting differences between perceptions of online newspapers and “other,” “non-paper” news sites on the Internet. Trends in uses and effects are most evident among particular socio-demographic groups, among which young people. The first signs of media use displacement effects are visible. Under different conditions online news gradually substitutes for printed newspapers, free local newspapers and teletext, and non-paper news sites for online newspaper sites. Introduction So far, users of newspaper Websites still have had the characteristics of the “early majority” or even of “early adopters” (Rogers, 2003): Highly- educated and younger people, men, and high-income earners are still more likely to visit newspapers online than nonusers (e.g., De Waal, Schönbach, 110 Uses and effects of online news & Lauf, 2005; Dutta-Bergman, 2004; Nielsen//NetRatings, 2005; Zhu & He, 2002). But, the consumption of online news is continuously growing (see e.g., Horrigan, 2006). Some particularly worry about the political consequences of online news becoming more widespread. Increasing options for online users and greater individual power to customize what one consumes have both been hailed and feared. -

Schrijvers Utrecht University [email protected] Abstract The article presents two case studies of two women who were confronted with a loss of religious authority as they were asked to resign from their lay leading positions after their coming-out as transwomen in the Roman Catholic Church and the Protestant Church in the Netherlands. By focusing on these stories, this article provides further insight into queer lives in Europe starting from the intersections of gender, sexuality and religion.The cases show how the position of transwomen is negotiated by both reli- gious structures as well as by transwomen themselves. The analysis focuses particularly on the interactions between the women and their community and church authorities and examines the use of gender/sexuality terminology, the role of the body, and the individualization of faith. This article brings together insights from religious studies, gender, trans* and queer studies, which allows for a multi-layered understanding of trans* and religion in a European context.
