  • Australia and Japan
DRAFT Australia and Japan A New Economic Partnership in Asia A Report Prepared for Austrade by Peter Drysdale Crawford School of Economics and Government The Australian National University Tel +61 2 61255539 Fax +61 2 61250767 Email: [email protected] This report urges a paradigm shift in thinking about Australia’s economic relationship with Japan. The Japanese market is a market no longer confined to Japan itself. It is a huge international market generated by the activities of Japanese business and investors, especially via production networks in Asia. More than ever, Australian firms need to integrate more closely with these supply chains and networks in Asia. 1 Structure of the Report 1. Summary 3 2. Japan in Asia – Australia’s economic interest 5 3. Assets from the Australia-Japan relationship 9 4. Japan’s footprint in Asia 13 5. Opportunities for key sectors 22 6. Strategies for cooperation 32 Appendices 36 References 42 2 1. Summary Japan is the second largest economy in the world, measured in terms of current dollar purchasing power. It is Australia’s largest export market and, while it is a mature market with a slow rate of growth, the absolute size of the Japanese market is huge. These are common refrains in discussion of the Australia-Japan partnership over the last two decades or so. They make an important point. But they miss the main point about what has happened to Japan’s place in the world and its role in our region and what those changes mean for effective Australian engagement with the Japanese economy.

The Support Our Kids project is a 10-year project, which aims to support the independence of children affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and nurture them into future reconstruction leaders of the next generation. With the cooperation of Embassies and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we offer an homestay program funded through charity activities and projects. Following a charity rugby event with Dan Carter in 2016, Richie McCaw came to Japan and offered his support through rugby clinics, talk shows and an auction party in Tohoku and Tokyo. We successfully implemented the homestay programs with the tremendous support we received from these charity events. Today, the 33 participants will present their experiences abroad, on stage. Alumni of the program will also speak about current reconstruction activities and efforts to fulfillマスター their dreams. タイトルの書 Additionally, 4 participants will perform a special live performance, as a way to say thank you to their supporters. I hope you will enjoy the presentations and performances they have prepared for today. 式設定 Finally, it is with deep regret that I announce the death of Yukiatsu Akizawa, former General Secretary and Founder of Support Our Kids, on September 11. Copies of working papers are available from the author. How Major League Baseball Clubs Have Commercialized Their Investment in Japanese Top Stars Isao Okada and Stephen A. Greyser September 18, 2013 1 How Major League Baseball Clubs Have Commercialized Their Investment in Japanese Top Stars Abstract When a Major League Baseball club signs a Japanese star player, it obviously tries to commercialize its investment in the player. The initial focus is on home attendance (ticket sales) and television audiences, plus merchandise sales. These elements are similar to those considered for any high-performing players. However, for Japanese stars, there is also the potential to attract significant fandom from the local Japanese community. This represents an opportunity for truly incremental local revenue for the team. In addition, teams try to attract revenue from Japan—such as from corporate sponsors, advertising signage at the home field, and visiting Japanese fans traveling to the U.S. to see these stars perform. In addition to treating team efforts at growing local Japanese community support, this paper examines seven factors for success in attracting revenues from Japanese companies and fans: pitcher or position player, player’s popularity, non-stop flights from Japan, distance from Japan, non-sport tourist attractions in a city, size of Japanese community in the city and player’s and team’s performance.
