CAFE ROYAL COCKTAIL BOOK Compiled by W. J. TARLING Illustrated by FREDERICK CARTER Decorated by THE CHEVRON STUDIO PUBLICATIONS FROM PALL MALL LTD 43 DUKE STREET, ST. JAMES', LONDON, S.W.i MADE AND PRINTED IN GREAT BRITAIN BY THE SIDNEY PRESS LTD., LONDON AND BEDFORD [Sketched by Wykeham Studios ALL Royalties derived by W. J. Tarling from this book are to be equally divided between The United Kingdom Bartenders' Guild Sickness Benefit Fund and The Cafe Royal Sports Club Fund. Contents COCKTAILS - - - Section One OTHER DRINKS - - Section Two INDEX to names of cocktails whose vast number prevents inclusion of . recipes in this book - - - Section Three GLOSSARY - - - Section Four Coronation Edition 1937 Preface O compile this book of Cocktails has been no easy task since it has entailed minutely examining over four thousand recipes, and to keep the book within reasonable bounds it has been only possible to give a selection of the most suitable cocktails. The majority of recipes are the originals of Members of the United Kingdom Bartenders' Guild, of which I have the honour to be President, and I can assure my readers that if they will follow these recipes carefully they will be able to enjoy many drinks with which they were hitherto unacquainted. Careful observation has shown that at the majority of Cocktail parties there is little variation in the cocktails offered, and each party is apt to have a monotonous repetition of Martini, Bronx, Manhattan, and White Lady Cocktails, all, I grant, very good cocktails indeed, but just as apt to be dull as continuous dinners at which the same soup, fish, meat and sweet are served.

She wasn’t much of a cocktail drinker, but she did put the letters LUV on the wall above our 1970s freestanding bar in the downstairs den. Then when she got tired of it, she let me move that bar upstairs to my bedroom—which I thought was pretty darn glamorous as a 10-year-old. Copyright text and photographs © 2013 by Greg Henry. • DND Drinks Menu
Speakeasy — a bar that served alcohol during the Prohibition Era of the United States (1920 – 1933). They were so called from the practice of speaking quietly about such a place in public, or when inside it, so as not to alert the police and neighbours. BARREL-AGED COCKTAILS The practice of holding spirits in casks has been going on for centuries. It has evolved from necessity of storage into practically a science. But there is still an element of something magical going on and a certain amount of faith is required. It is not called the “angel’s share” for nothing. VINTAGE SAZERAC According to the legend, the world’s first cocktail was reportedly invented in the mid-1800s at the Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans by apothecary owner Antoine Peychaud. In 1873, the recipe was altered to replace the French brandy with American Rye whiskey and a dash of Absinthe. Frapin 1988 Grande Champagne Cognac, Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge 1970, Spray of Jade Nouvelle Orleans Absinthe Verte & a Lemon Twist. Aged in a Sauternes seasoned barrel. £25 MANHATTAN A popular history suggest that the drink originated form the Manhattan Club in New York City in the early 1870s where it was invented by Dr Iain Marshall for a banquet hosted by Jennie Jerome (Lady Randolph Churchill, mother of Winston) in honour of presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. Rittenhouse 100 Proof Rye, Cocchi Di Torino, Angostura Bitter. Aged in a Bordeaux “Larose Perganson” red wine seasoned barrel. £15 BIJOU The cocktail was invented by Harry Johnson “The Father of Professional Bartending” who called it Bijou because it combined the colors of three jewels: gin for diamond, vermouth for ruby and chartreuse for emerald.

  • Pittsburgh Perspectives
Children’s School October 2014 Pittsburgh Perspectives Why did the Shawnee, French, and British all want to live at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monogahela, and Ohio rivers? Why have so many major innovations in science & technology, medicine, industry, the arts, etc. originated in Pittsburgh? How did the “Steel City” become the most livable city in the US? Why did each of us choose to call Pittsburgh “home” for this period of our lives? These are among the exciting questions that prompted us to choose Pittsburgh for the theme of our 2014-15 Whole School Unit. Our educators began our own explorations by visiting the Fort Pitt Museum & Blockhouse and the Heinz History Center. Though the unit is scheduled for February, we are already introducing Pittsburgh as a thread throughout the whole year. Watch for images of the city skyline and three rivers, displays honoring Pittsburghers who are famous for their work supporting children and learning, and monthly tips for expanding your family’s adventures in Pittsburgh. If you are interested in helping to design the unit or have ideas to share, please contact Sharon Carver ([email protected]) or Violet McGillen ([email protected]). October’s Pittsburgh Tip: Whether you are new to Pittsburgh or a lifelong resident, there is much to explore here. Visit the city’s official visitor’s guide at http://www.visitpittsburgh.com to see why they chose the slogan “Pittsburgh Mighty and Beautiful”. NextPittsburgh focuses on “taking Pittsburgh to the next level”, and they have a great section on family adventures at http://www.nextpittsburgh.com/events/family-adventures-september-in-pittsburgh/.

2017 Iron Butt Rally North American Safari The 2017 Iron Butt Rally (IBR) is designed to lead you on a photo safari of North America’s iconic animals, both real and imagined. Armed with only your camera and motorcycle, you will roam the wilds in search of these elusive creatures. Fortunately, all of the target creatures are sedentary and quite unlikely to run onto the road. In this catalog, you will find data on different beasts to hunt. Your goal is to capture a photo and escape before they turn on you. The animals in the rally book are divided into five categories for your sorting enjoyment: Air These majestic birds and insects capture our imagination with their ability to soar above it all and see the world from a different perspective. Land From iconic images of native bison to fearsome predators to pets, land animals are symbols of nature, strength, and companionship. Water Creatures of ocean, lake, river, and stream, these animals provide food, sport, and in some cases provoke visceral fear. Prehistoric Eons ago, giants roamed these lands. You can still find their remnants today if you know where to look. Mythical Born of our imagination, whimsy, or a need to explain the unknown, these creatures popped up throughout history. Search out representations of those fanciful ideas. This keepsake booklet identifies each of the 328 different creature bonuses available on your safari and provides specific directions to document each bonus. Bonus codes are listed alphabetically. Points and leg-specific instructions will be in the Leg Bonus Packs. Enjoy the adventure!
