Punk Preludes Travis Buck Senior Honors Project University of Tennessee, Knoxville Abstract This paper is an analysis of some of the lyrics of two early punk rock bands, The Sex Pistols and The Dead Kennedys. Focus is made on the background of the lyrics and the sub-text as well as text of the lyrics. There is also some analysis of punk's impact on mondern music During the mid to late 1970's a new genre of music crept into the popular culture on both sides of the Atlantic; this genre became known as punk rock. Divorcing themselves from the mainstream of music and estranging nlany on their way, punk musicians challenged both nlusical and cultural conventions. The music, for the most part, was written by the performers and performed without worrying about what other people thought of it.

You might say that punk has played a pivotal role in my life. Needless to say, I have also seen a great deal of media misrepresentation over the years. I completely agree with Craig O’Hara’s perception when he states in his fine introduction to American punk rock, self-explanatorily entitled The Philosophy of Punk: More than Noise, that “Punk has been characterized as a self-destructive, violence oriented fad [...] which had no real significance.” (1999: 43.) He quotes Larry Zbach of Maximum RockNRoll, one of the better known international punk fanzines1, who speaks of “repeated media distortion” which has lead to a situation wherein “more and more people adopt the appearance of Punk [but] have less and less of an idea of its content.

God Save The Sex Pistols - Reviews Punk Page 1 of 14 REVIEWS PUNK This section covers non - Pistols products which I have enjoyed and may be of interest to Sex Pistols' fans. Bad Brains - Live at CBGB 1982 (Wienerworld WNRD2393) Released 25th September 2006 In the early 80s, with punk largely on the wane back in the UK, over in the US the Hardcore scene was exploding. Filmed at a three-day Hardcore festival held at CBGB's 24-26th December 1982, the DVD brings together footage from the festival. Bad Brains are perhaps unique in hardcore terms as they intersperse full-on thrash, such as Big Take Over and Riot Squad, with great reggae grooves like King Of Glory. What's most striking about the footage, as well as the intensity of the band, is the audience who are so into the band they go crazy, spilling on and off the stage dancing like punks possessed. It's chaos. If you think you know how to mix it up at a punk show, think again. "Someone get this dude, he's bleedin" says vocalist H.R.as a punter sustains an injury. It's captured on film by multiple cameras both off stage and on, often getting caught up in the action. Bad Brains belong in the top echelons of US Hardcore, along with Black Flag and the Dead Kennedys. Fast, accomplished and wild. Which brings us onto... Dead Kennedys - In God We Trust Inc. The Lost Tapes (Wienerworld WNRD2207) Brilliant. In God We Trust Inc. was a landmark EP heralding the arrival of Hardcore.

PUBLIC COLLECTORS Records Collection Inventory of: Marc Fischer Chicago, IL, USA About PUBLIC COLLECTORS Public Collectors consists of informal agreements where collectors allow the contents of their collection to be published and permit those who are curious to directly experience the objects in person. Participants must be willing to type up an inventory of their collection, provide a means of contact and share their collection with the public. Collectors can be based in any geographic location. Public Collectors is founded upon the concern that there are many types of cultural artifacts that public libraries, museums and other institutions and archives either do not collect or do not make freely accessible. Public Collectors asks individuals that have had the luxury to amass, organize, and inventory these materials to help reverse this lack by making their collections public. The purpose of this project is for large collections of materials to become accessible so that knowledge, ideas and expertise can be freely shared and exchanged. Public Collectors is not intended, nor should it be used for buying and selling objects. There are many preexisting venues for that. Collectors can accommodate viewers at whatever location is most com - fortable or convenient for them. If their collection is portable or can be viewed in a location other than the collector’s home, this would still be an appropriate way to participate in the project. In addition to hosting collection inventories and other information, www.publiccollectors.org includes digital collections that are suitable for web presentation, do not have a physical material analog, or are difficult or impossible to experience otherwise.

  • Riff Schemes, Form, and the Genre of Early American Hardcore Punk (1978–83) * David B
Volume 21, Number 1, March 2015 Copyright © 2015 Society for Music Theory Riff Schemes, Form, and the Genre of Early American Hardcore Punk (1978–83) * David B. Easley NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: http://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.15.21.1/mto.15.21.1.easley.php KEYWORDS: punk rock, hardcore, genre, popular music, riff, repetition, form, musical meaning, Bad Brains, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat ABSTRACT: This article explores the structures of guitar riffs in early American hardcore punk rock and their role in the creation of meaning within the genre. Drawing upon a corpus analysis of recordings by Bad Brains, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, and Minor Threat, the article begins by outlining the main ways in which guitar riffs are structured. Many reflect a structural basis in what I call “riff schemes,” organizing patterns of physical repetition and physical change made by a guitarist’s fretting hand. There are four main types, which are defined by the location of repetition within the riff (at the beginning or at the end) and whether the type of repetition is exact or altered: (1) Initial Repetition and Contrast, (2) Statement and Terminal Repetition, (3) Statement and Terminal Alteration, and (4) Model and Sequential Repetition. These schemes may also play an expressive role in song narratives of energy, intensity, and aggression, all of which are common tropes in oral histories of hardcore. In the final part of the article, I present analyses of two songs that demonstrate this use: Minor Threat’s “Straight Edge” and Black Flag’s “Rise Above.” Received July 2014 Introduction [1.1] American hardcore punk rock—or simply “hardcore”—is a subgenre of punk that first emerged in the late 1970s as a response to the “punk rock revolution” created by bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Ramones ( Blush 2010 , 14).

Radim Jakubec Acknowledgements I would like to express my gratitude to Mgr. Zdeněk Janík, M.A., Ph.D. for allowing me to choose this topic and for his supervision. Abstract The aim of this Bachelor Thesis is to investigate and describe the history and development of punk subculture in the USA and the UK. The punk subculture has been in existence for about 40 years, yet not many books on the topic have been written. Using comparative, contrastive and empirical methods – together with description and analysis – the thesis focuses on the subculture from different points of view. The main emphasis is put on the USA and the UK punk scenes and the differences and similarities between them. Based on observation, experience and other empirical methods, the importance of real life in the history and development of punk subculture is stressed, too. The thesis is composed of the following chapters: Introduction, Subculture and punk, Main thoughts of punk, History of punk subculture, Movements related to punk, Punk style and fashion, Punk today and future visions, Survey and Conclusion.

It’s the incredible free! MutantMutant PopPop Z Mailorder Catalog Another catalog, another great record on the street... Whoops! Make that two great records!!! I finally managed to get MP-36 DARLINGTON “Bowling Betty” EP out the door during the first week of February. A little later than I had been predicting, to be sure, but anyone who has been keeping score at home already knows that I’m about the world’s worst for predicting release dates. Either the art is late or I’m late or the plant is late or the sleeve is late. Sometimes all of the above. Don’t sweat these things too much, everything gets out there eventually... The distributors are once again staying away from my stuff in droves. Who knows, one of these days you may see a Mutant Pop ad on the TV during late night wrestling advertising Mutant Pop singles under the slogan “Not Available in Any Store.” That’s the direction things are headed anyway! (Distributors are welcome to wake up any time!) One of the paradoxes of this label is that the MP name gets more identifiable, as stuff starts to sell faster from the bins and more people are collecting the singles series, the distributors and stores are taking fewer and fewer copies. It’s surreal, almost like an episode of “Twilight Zone.” If current trends con- tinue, by the time I wrap up the label in 2005, MP will be the biggest name in punk and will sell exactly 7 copies of each new release to distributors..
