KNOTS A very short guide to knotting terminology used on these pages. This is not an exhaustive list of knotting terms; it just contains some of the more unfamiliar words that we have used. If you wish to research the subject further, any good book on knots should have a knotting glossary. • Knot. Strictly speaking, a knot is tied in the end of a line as a stopper, such as the Thumb knot or Figure of eight knot. • Stopper knots are used to stop the end of a rope fraying, or to stop it running through a small hole or constriction. • Bend. A bend is used to tie two ropes together, as in the Sheet bend. Technically, even the Reef knot is a bend. • Hitch. A hitch is used to tie a rope to a spar, ring or post, such as the Clove hitch. Hitches can also be used to tie one rope onto another rope, as in the Rolling hitch. • Running End - the end of the rope that is being used to tie the knot. • Standing End - the static end of the rope. • Splice – A splice is used to fasten two ends of a rope together when a knot would be impracticable, as, for instance, when the rope must pass through a pulley. • Bight can have two meanings: -- The main part of the rope from the running end to the standing end -- Where the rope is bent back to form a loop. • Jam - when the knot tightens under tension and you cannot get it undone! Blackwall Hitch This is a simple half hitch over a hook. -

Journal ol Personality and Social Psychology 1975, Vol. 32, No. 1, 92-101 Choosing to Suffer as a Consequence of Expecting to Suffer: Why Do People Do It? Ronald Comer and James D. Laird Clark University In three previous studies, most subjects who anticipated having to perform an unpleasant task (e.g., eat a worm) and who were then offered a choice of that or a neutral task chose the unpleasant task. It was hypothesized that this "choosing to suffer" effect was produced by the subjects' attempt to make sense of their anticipated suffering, through one of three kinds of change in their conception of themselves and the situation: (a) they deserved the suffer- ing, (b) they were brave, or (c) the worm was not too bad. Subjects antici- pating a neutral task did not change on these measures, while subjects eating a worm changed significantly, indicating that anticipated suffering did cause the predicted reconceptualizations. Changes in these three kinds of conception predicted subject's choice or not of eating the worm, indicating that these changes produced the subsequent choice. Finally, subjects who saw them- selves as either more brave or more deserving also chose to administer painful electric shocks to themselves, while subjects who had changed their concep- tions of the worm did not, indicating that these conceptual changes can affect behavior in situations different from that which initially caused the conceptual changes. LLT 180 Lecture 22 1 Today we're gonna pick up with Gottfried von Strassburg. As most of you already know, and it's been alleged and I readily admit, that I'm an occasional attention slut. Obviously, otherwise, I wouldn't permit it to be recorded for TV. And, you know, if you pick up your Standard today, it always surprises me -- actually, if you live in Springfield, you might have met me before without realizing it. I like to cook and a colleague in the department -- his wife's an editor for the Springfield paper and she also writes a weekly column for the "Home" section. And so he and I were talking about pans one day and I was, you know, saying, "Well," you know, "so many people fail to cook because they don't have the perfect pan." And she was wanting to write an article about pans. She'd been trying to convince him to buy better pans. And so she said, "Hey, would you pose for a picture with pans? I'm writing this article." And so I said, "Oh, what the heck." And so she came over and took this photo. And a couple of weeks later, I opened Sunday morning's paper -- 'cause I knew it was gonna be in that week -- and went over to the "Home" section. And there was this color photo, about this big, and I went, "Oh, crap," you know. So whatever. Gottfried. Again, as they tell you here, we don't know much about these people, and this is really about love. -

TROOP 113 Knot Kninja To Start Everyone will begin at White Cord. You will be given a length of White Cord rope after completing the four requirements for this rank This will be part of your required uniform and should be worn to all scout functions that require a Class A uniform. Advancement In order to advance a level, the participant must demonstrate the knots or techniques listed for that rank and tell how each is useful. There will be a limit of two attempts for each knot. After proving knowledge and ability in a particular level, you will be awarded a length of rope indicating the color you just completed. All Knot Levels must be worn on the belt or belt loop. Knot Masters or Black Cord Knotters may wear theirs as a Solomon Bar or Bugle Cord or any other decorative knot. If you are the first person to achieve that level, testing for that level will be done with at least one Scout and one Scouter and you will provide documentation as to what the finished knot looks like and it’s uses. The advancing Knotter may not view the documentation during the test. Testing Testing will be allowed 15minutes before and 15 minutes after each scout meeting or during the meeting as time allows. Testing may also be done at campouts. You may only test one time per day. Challenges Any Scout or adult may challenge another scout or adult at the same level or below. At that point, the challenger names any two (2)knots from the current rank and below. -

Texas 4-H Natural Resources Program Knot Tying: Tying the THIEF KNOT The Thief Knot is one of the most interesting knots to teach people about. The Thief Knot is said to have been tied by Sailor’s who wanted a way to see if their Sea Bag was being tampered with. The crafty Sailor would tie the Thief Knot, which closely resembles the Square Knot, counting on a careless thief. The Thief Knot is tied much like the Square Knot, but the ends of the knot are at opposite ends. The careless thief, upon seeing what knot was tied in the Sailor’s sea bag, would tie the bag back with a regular Square Knot alerting the Sailor his bag had been rummaged through. The Thief Knot, while more of a novelty knot, does have its purpose if you’re trying to fool thieves… I guess it’s safe to say it was the original tamper evident tape. Much like the Square Knot, the Thief Knot should NOT be relied upon during a critical situation where lives are at risk! Also, the Thief Knot is even more insecure than the Square Knot and will also slip if not under tension or when tied with Nylon rope.
