Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, share their impassioned argument for responsible gun ownership. After the 2011 Tucson shooting that nearly took her life, basic questions consumed Gabby Giffords and her family: Would Gabby survive the bullet through her brain? Would she walk again? Speak? Her hard-won recovery, though far from complete, has now allowed her and Mark to ask larger questions that confront us as a nation: How can we address our nation's epidemic of gun violence? How can we protect gun rights for law abiding citizens, while keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill? What can we do about gun trafficking and other threats to our communities? Enough goes behind the scenes of Gabby and Mark's creation of Americans for Responsible Solutions, an organization dedicated to promoting responsible gun ownership and encouraging lawmakers to find solutions to gun violence, despite their widespread fear of the gun lobby. As gun owners and strong supporters of the Second Amendment, Gabby and Mark offer a bold but sensible path forward, preserving the right to own guns for collection, recreation, and protection while taking common-sense actions to prevent the next Tucson, Aurora, or Newtown. Poll after poll shows that most Americans agree with Gabby and Mark's reasonable proposals. As the book follows Gabby and Mark from the halls of Congress to communities across the country, it provides an intimate window into the recovery of one of our nation's most inspiring public figures and reveals how she and her husband have taken on the role of co-advocates for one of the defining issues of our time. • Austal Usa Delivers 11Th Independence Class Littoral Combat Ship – Future Uss Kansas City (Lcs 22)
COMPANY ANNOUNCEMENT 13 FEBRUARY 2020 AUSTAL USA DELIVERS 11TH INDEPENDENCE CLASS LITTORAL COMBAT SHIP – FUTURE USS KANSAS CITY (LCS 22) Austal Limited (ASX:ASB) is pleased to announce that Austal USA has delivered its 11th Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) to the U.S. Navy at the company’s shipyard in Mobile, Alabama. The future USS Kansas City (LCS 22) is the first Independence-class LCS to be delivered by Austal USA in 2020. Austal Chief Executive Officer David Singleton said the latest LCS delivery from Austal’s USA shipyard builds upon the company’s strong record in recent years. “Austal USA’s delivery of the Independence-class LCS program continues to impress, with quality, cost and productivity improvements being achieved with each new vessel. “We have now delivered 11 of the 19 Independence-class LCS currently contracted and it’s very pleasing to see more and more of these ships deployed around the world, adding great capability to the U.S. Navy,” Mr Singleton said. Upgrades to the LCS program continue to take shape, both in production and post-delivery. Austal USA and General Dynamics Mission Systems teams recently integrated a new over-the- horizon missile system onto the USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS 10) prior to her deployment. Gabrielle Giffords and her sister ship, USS Montgomery (LCS 8), are currently deployed and meeting U.S. Navy operational requirements in South East Asia. Five Independence-class Littoral Combat Ships (small surface combatants) are under various stages of construction at Austal USA including the future USS Oakland (LCS 24) and USS Mobile (LCS 26) that are preparing for sea trials.

  • Democratic Erosion in Arizona and New Mexico By
Democratic Erosion in Arizona and New Mexico A comparative analysis on the divergence of border states over time. Capstone Thesis with Professor Sperber by: Cristin Espinoza Published March 2018 at the University of Denver 1. Introduction. Whereas former US Supreme Court Chief Justice Brandeis once described US states as laboratories of democracy, recent scholarship on democratic erosion calls for scholars to reconsider the degree to which US states may also serve as laboratories for authoritarian practices (Levitsky & Ziblatt, 2018). In this paper, I seek to advance the understanding of democratic erosion. First, I establish empirical variation in the level of democratic erosion across two US southern border states: Arizona and New Mexico. I also demonstrate that although journalistic accounts often emphasize the role of demography and geography as determinants of voter suppression, redistricting, populist rhetoric, and even racial profiling practices in Arizona, the aforementioned factors are more similar than different across Arizona and New Mexico. Instead, I evaluate the hypothesis that long-run historical differences have influenced democratic erosion in these cases in ways previously overlooked. Specifically, I consider whether stronger Native American defense against white settlement in Arizona constituted a critical juncture that led to significantly more exclusive and ethnically charged state-level politics in Arizona than in neighboring New Mexico. To evaluate this hypothesis rigorously, I consider additional, competing hypotheses, including the possibility that rapid growth of Arizona’s older white population in recent decades, or differences in recent immigration flows may have steered the state in a less democratic direction than its neighbor. I find little evidence that these factors can explain what I demonstrate are longer-run political differences across state lines.

Administration of Barack Obama, 2011 Remarks on the Shootings in Tucson, Arizona January 8, 2011 As many of you are aware, earlier today a number of people were shot in Tucson, Arizona, including several who were meeting at a supermarket with their Congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords. We are still assembling all the facts, but we know that Representative Giffords was one of the victims. She is currently at a hospital in the area, and she is battling for her life. We also know that at least five people lost their lives in this tragedy. Among them were a Federal judge, John Roll, who has served America's legal system for almost 40 years, and a young girl who was barely 9 years old. I've spoken to Arizona Governor Jan Brewer and offered the full resources of the Federal Government. A suspect is currently in custody, but we don't yet know what provoked this unspeakable act. A comprehensive investigation is currently underway, and at my direction, Director Bob Mueller is en route to Arizona to help coordinate these efforts. I've also spoken to the Democratic and Republican leaders in the House. Gabby Giffords was a friend of mine. She is not only an extraordinary public servant, but she is also somebody who is warm and caring. She is well liked by her colleagues and well liked by her constituents. Her husband, Mark Kelly, is a Navy captain and one of America's valiant astronauts. It's not surprising that today Gabby was doing what she always does: listening to the hopes and concerns of her neighbors.

Austal Limited (ASX:ASB) is pleased to announce that the future USS Mobile (LCS 26) has successfully completed acceptance trials in the Gulf of Mexico. LCS 26 is the 13th Independence- class Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) built by Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama, for the United States Navy (USN). Austal Chief Executive Officer David Singleton said Mobile (LCS26) was the third naval ship to successfully complete acceptance trials at Austal USA in 2020. “I know that the Austal USA team are particularly proud of this latest LCS, which is named after their home city of Mobile, and they have every reason to be proud given this is the third ship built by Austal USA to have completed acceptance trials for the US Navy in 2020,” Mr Singleton said. “The successful completion of acceptance trials for Mobile in Mobile, during this challenging time in world history is an outstanding achievement and testament to the skills and commitment of the Austal USA team.” Acceptance trials involve the execution of a number of tests by the Austal USA-led industry team while the vessel is underway; demonstrating to the United States Navy the successful operation of the ship’s major systems and equipment. The trials are the last significant milestone before delivery of the ship, scheduled for October 2020. The Independence-class LCS is a high-speed, shallow-draft surface combatant with an aluminium trimaran hull that provides class leading, multi-mission capability. These ships are designed to defeat growing littoral threats and provide access and dominance along coastal waters. A fast, maneuverable and networked surface-combatant, LCS provides the required warfighting capabilities and operational flexibility to execute surface warfare, mine warfare and anti-submarine warfare missions.

  • On Obama Administration Gun Policy with Continual Reference to the Multiple Streams Model
ON OBAMA ADMINISTRATION GUN POLICY WITH CONTINUAL REFERENCE TO THE MULTIPLE STREAMS MODEL by MICHAEL A. HRISTAKOPOULOS B.A. University of Central Florida, 2011 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Political Science in the College of Sciences at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Summer Term 2013 Major Professor: Andrea Vieux © 2013 Michael Hristakopoulos ii ABSTRACT The Multiple Streams model developed by John Kingdon (1995) and Nikolaos Zahariadis (2007) provides a valuable framework for understanding the nature of policy change. This investigation draws extensively upon the Multiple Streams framework in order to understand the development of gun-control policy initiatives under President Barack Obama. The investigation uses a case-study approach with in-depth analysis of four different mass-shooting events that took place in the United States between 2009 and 2012. Reconstruction of the shooting events and detailed parsing of the Obama administration’s official responses to each incident, when viewed through the Multiple Streams lens, clearly explain why Obama’s aggressive policy initiative was so delayed in its emergence in spite of several shootings and the President’s clearly stated belief that gun-reform was a necessary step for the federal government. While the term “policy change” is broad and may encompass all sorts of governmental responsiveness, the term herein should be interpreted in the narrowest sense: exclusively encompassing legislative initiatives. Ultimately, the investigation concludes that numerous factors, but most prominently concerns about the timing and results of the 2010 Midterm and 2012 General Elections, prevented an aggressive pursuit of gun-reform prior to January 2013.
