Drosophila wings have been widely used to study the genetics of development, morphometrics and evolution. Therefore there is much interest in quantifying wing structures of Drosophila. Advancement in technology has increased the ease in which images of Drosophila can be acquired. However such studies have been limited by the slow and tedious process of acquiring phenotypic data. Results: We have developed a system that automatically detects and measures key points and vein segments on a Drosophila wing. Key points are detected by performing image transformations and template matching on Drosophila wing images while vein segments are detected using an Active Contour algorithm. The accuracy of our key point detection was compared against key point annotations of users. We also performed key point detection using different training data sets of Drosophila wing images. We compared our software with an existing automated image analysis system for Drosophila wings and showed that our system performs better than the state of the art. Vein segments were manually measured and compared against the measurements obtained from our system. Conclusion: Our system was able to detect specific key points and vein segments from Drosophila wing images with high accuracy. S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1).     National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior Northeast Region Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Biodiversity Associated with Eastern Hemlock Forests: Assessment and Classification of Invertebrate Biodiversity within Shenandoah National Park Technical Report NPS/NER/NRTR--2004/001 ON THE COVER Top: This twig of eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) was removed from a tree at Limberlost in August 1997. The white material at the base of the needles is produced by the female hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) and provides protection for nymphs and eggs of this species. Eastern hemlocks are injured by the adelgids inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the base of the needles and removing plant fluids. This nonnative insect has caused decline and mortality of nearly all eastern hemlocks in Shenandoah National Park. Bottom: These insects, primarily in the Order Lepidoptera, were captured using a light trap in Limberlost during August 1997. CEP 88 040-900, Florianópolis, SC, Brazil. Abstract: This study presents a literature review of Drosophilidae (Diptera) species occurrence in Brazil. The number of species recorded is 304, with Drosophila being the genus with the greatest number of species, followed by Zygothrica, Hirtodrosophila and Diathoneura, which belong to the Drosophilinae subfamily. Drosophila was shown to be the most investigated taxon in the family, with the best resolved species distribution. The low number of records of species from other genera indicates the paucity of studies specifically designed to investigate these species. Records of species for some regions of the country like the north and northeast, as well as for some biomes like Caatinga, Pantanal and the Pampas, are likewise rare. Apart from the banana bait, different collection methods may be necessary, like the collection at other oviposition resources, the use of baits other than fermenting fruit, and the adoption of sampling approaches that do not use baits. The Drosophilid fauna has been less investigated in the Atlantic Afrotropical islands than in the Indian Ocean. Located about 250 km from the continent, the volcanic island of São Tomé has been colonized mostly by natural means, probably by the wind, since the emergence of the island about 15 million years ago, and presumably also by anthro- pogenic transportation of invasive and domestic species. To date, 37 different Drosophilid species have been mentioned from São Tomé. The present work extends this list to 80 species. The genera Zygothrica, Phorticella and Hypselothyrea are newly recorded from the island. Among these 80 species, only 12 are putatively introduced by human activities, suggesting the preponderance of natural arrivals.

ABSTRACT Understanding phylogenetic relationships among taxa is key to designing and implementing comparative analyses. The genus Drosophila, which contains over 1600 species, is one of the most important model systems in the biological sciences. For over a century, one species in this group, Drosophila melanogaster, has been key to studies of animal development and genetics, genome organization and evolution, and human disease. As whole-genome sequencing becomes more cost-effective, there is increasing interest in other members of this morphologically, ecologically, and behaviorally diverse genus. Phylogenetic relationships within Drosophila are complicated, and the goal of this paper is to provide a review of the recent taxonomic changes and phylogenetic relationships in this genus to aid in further comparative studies. The relationships of the families within the superfamily are less understood and the families are listed alphabetically in the checklist below. Seven or eight families are currently included in Ephydroidea. Five of them are found in Finland. Four families are covered in this paper; the fifth (Ephydridae itself) has its own treatment in this volume of ZooKeys.
