Mrs. Katherine Burke, a former principal of the school, left money in her will, in 1935, to begin the project. Public subscription added to the fund, and the sculptor, Mr. Fairbanks, who had visited Hawaii, contributed his services."

Design includes a map image of the Hawaiian Islands, 50-star of the United States, first national flag of the Confederacy, and the of Hawaii. Inscription: He Ho'omana'o No (In Memory of) Hawai'i Sons of the Civil War Dedicated to the brave souls from Hawai'i who served in the American Civil War from 1861-1865. Although the Kingdom of Hawai'i declared itself neutral in the great conflict, some Hawai'i citizens joined the Union and Confederate forces to fight for a cause they supported and to which they were willing to give their last full measure of devotion. This monument is sponsored by the Hawai'i Sons of the Civil War Memorial Committee, the Hawai'i Civil War Round Table, O'ahu Cemetery and many individuals.

The National Guard is unaware of the current location of these guns, per letter to Billy Ogan from Maj-Gen. Edward V. Richardson, dated 30 April 1999.

Case Name: HI-Honolulu-Honolulu-OahuCem-GAR Plot State: Hawaii Type: County: Honolulu Decorative elements in the plot included five cannons (gifts to the GAR by the king), and a pyramidal Location: monument (cenotaph). The cannons were arrayed with one on each corner of the plot and one in the GAR Plot, Oahu Cemetery, 2162 Nuuanu Ave center. The central cannon was a carronade mounted on a naval carriage. The central cannon has been removed from the plot, however, the corner cannons remain, mounted muzzle-up at the corners of the plot. The chain fence and pyramidal monument are also no longer present at the site.

Status: Under Assessment X Needs Further Investigation Completed CWM-61 (assessment form) available Form CWM-62 (grant application) available Notes: Sculpture depicting Regimental Quartermaster Ira Barnes Dutton (aka, Brother Joseph Dutton) in Civil War dress uniform. Dutton served in the 13th Wisconsin Infantry from 9 Sept. 1861 to 13 Dec. 1865. Converting to Catholicism in 1883, he changed his name to honor St. Joseph. He came to Molokai in 1886 to devote the remainder of his life to service in the leper colony on the island. Dutton died in Kalawao in 1931. The sculpture depicts Dutton wearing the frock coat of a Major- and shoulder boards of a 4-star general. The kepi appears to display crossed cannons, signifying artillery (Dutton was Infantry).

This is a twin sculpture to one installed at Kamalo, Molokai in August 2013 (HI--Molokai-Kamalo-Statue-Dutton-2013).
