Sikh Federation (UK) Never flinch from performing righteous deeds ANNUAL REPORT 2020 WORKING FOR TRUTH, JUSTICE & FREEDOM OVERVIEW A message from the Chairman In the last 6 months major restricons have been imposed on our daily lives by the COVID-19 pandemic. The extraordinary response to the unprecedented public health crisis has changed the way we interact with each other whether that be in families, at work and as a community. For Sikhs the concept of Sangat, as opposed to isolated religious pracce, is essenal for our spiritual and moral well-being. For many Sikhs it is only when we are part of the Sangat that we are able to carry out much of our seva. Global polics are now dominated by the pandemic, which has resulted in unparalleled expansion of government power. Restricons and the public health crisis will remain unl an effecve vaccine is available. Most commentators predict we are anything from 6-12 months away from a safe and effecve vaccine. The full economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are sll unfolding but all governments are expected to struggle for many years with some struggling more than others. The Brexit referendum in 2016 triggered a process of polarisaon in society that cut across the tradional Brish polical party landscape. Brexit for many years, dominated UK naonal polics and was the major issue during the December 2019 General Elecon that returned a Conservave government with a large majority. The Covid-19 pandemic and its aermath however has the potenal to be a polical game-changer in the UK that could completely reshape the Brish polical landscape.

We have 11 years left to make the changes necessary to prevent the catastrophic effects of at least a 2°C rise from becoming an inevitable and irreversible reality 4. Rapid and decisive action is needed in all areas of society to meet these targets. 5. The impacts of climate change will hit the underprivileged the hardest. 6. Several universities (usually beginning with the SU), over 40 local councils and UK Parliament have already declared a climate emergency. 6. The issue of antisemitism in the Labour Party has been incredibly difficult for the Jewish community and for Jewish students in particular, who have faced antisemitism on campus. 2. The Labour Party’s new leadership have made promising steps in dealing with the problem of antisemitism in Labour but there is still a long way to go. 3. The Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) played a key role in the fight against antisemitism, having referred the Labour Party to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) – which found it guilty of committing three unlawful acts. 4. UJS has worked with JLM in the past to provide antisemitism awareness training on campus. How do you want it to happen? 1. UJS should continue to work alongside the Jewish Labour Movement in co-hosting events to share the experiences of Jewish students. 2. If antisemitism awareness training in University Labour Clubs resumes, UJS should facilitate training with JLM. UJS should be in regular contact with JLM to coordinate efforts to fight antisemitism on campus when it arises in Labour Party spaces. THE BRIDE IN AMERICAN MEDIA: A FEMINIST MEDIA STUDIES AND CRITICAL ANALYSIS, 1831-2012 by EMILIA NOELLE BAK (Under the Direction of Janice Hume) ABSTRACT This dissertation examined the figure of the bride in American media. Today, the bride is a ubiquitous figure. She graces the covers of magazines, websites are devoted to her, and multiple television series star her. This study aimed to understand the American bride contemporarily and historically by examining magazine media from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as well as today’s reality television programming. Pulling from feminist media studies and critical cultural studies and proceeding from the standpoint that representations matter, portrayals of the bride were analyzed in terms of gender, class and race for ways in which these representations affirmed and/or resisted the dominant ideology. The bride was examined in media targeted at women to understand how media meant for women talked about the bride, a uniquely female figure. The nineteenth-century women’s magazine Godey’s Lady’s Book, the twentieth-century women’s magazine Ladies’ Home Journal and today’s most notorious reality bride show, Bridezillas, were all examined.
