Dear Friends Service It’s always an enjoyable night and supper with the chance to make (or Friday 7th When I became the Society's President in May 2017, several fellow members lose) a couple of pounds. De- December told me that my year would go very quickly. This has indeed proved to be the tails next time but note the Good food and case. In no time at all, the autumn programme was completed. Then it was St date. great singing Andrew’s Night, Hogmanay and shortly thereafter the season of Robert Burns. By February I was assured, correctly as it turns out, that I would feel that I was on the home stretch. My job has been made much much easier by all the help I have had from my colleagues on the Council and I want to say a big thank you to them all. BURNS SUPPER It is now barely a month to go before I hand over to my successor, Arlene in the traditional way at McMaster. I am delighted that she is to be our new President. She has given so TAPTON HALL much to the Society for well over thirty years. Arlene has always been an active, with excellent speakers, hands-on member, contributing hugely to the success of so many of our activities. Her programme for next year will give us just the right mix, from the excellent entertainment fun of the "Night at the Dogs" to interesting visits and talks. We will again see & excellent food the Hogmanay Ceilidh ( a much loved feature of the Caley year ) on 31st with a bit of dancing too! December 2018. SATURDAY 26th JANUARY I also want to mention two people who are moving on and leaving the area 2019 before the summer. The first is Hugh Porteous who has been a stalwart of the Dance Group for decades and has led them for the last decade. He is retiring to Scotland and I would like to acknowledge the role he has played in the Group, one of our strongest and longest running activities. The second is the Rev Robert Beard who will be known to many through his Pastoral Ministry at St Andrew’s and later, Church and who has been a good friend of ours. He too is moving away and I would want on behalf of the Caleys to wish him well for the future. crazy golf; ten pin bowling; I also want to look to the future. In recent years, many other Caledonian Societies have had to close their doors for a final time. Within the last few weeks an Easter lunch at Granville the Chesterfield Society has been wound up. As we approach our bicentenary in College; 4 years time, renewal must be at the top of our agenda. I agreed in 2017 to get involved in a development group to address this challenge. We now need to get the Yorkshire District Tartan Ball our sleeves rolled up and crack on with the job! With best wishes Willy Coupar President and who knows what else!! 2 15
