Special Issue Published in International Journal of Trend in Research and Development (IJTRD), ISSN: 2394-9333, www.ijtrd.com Miranda: A Pinnacle of Femininity and Object of Patriarchal Power (A Study of Shakespeare‘s ―The Tempest‖) Mrs. Divya K.B, Associate Professor, Dept of English, Jindal First Grade College For WomenJindalnagar, Bangalore, India Abstract: Shakespeare was not of an age but for all times because his characters are true to the eternal aspects of human life and not limited to contemporary society. Shakespeare was also the soul of his age. By its very nature drama is a mirror of its times. He wrote for Elizabethan audience and he conditioned his art to suit the tastes of the people and the limitations of the age. Shakespeare‘s greatness, one critic said lay in his comprehensive soul. That is the most poetic summation of a dramatic genius that has never been equaled. No dramatist can create live characters save by bequeathing the best of himself into his work of art, scattering among them a largess of his own qualities, his own wit, his comprehensive cogent philosophy, his own rhythm of action and the simplicity or complexity of his own nature. Shakespeare excelled in all of them all the time, or at least majority of times, as he teased and tormented his readers with his exquisite wit on one scale and sublimated them with his deep insight into human psyche on another. Shakespeare wrote in the age outstanding in literary history and its vitality of language. During the time of Shakespeare, there was a social construct of daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and skilful gender and sexuality norms just as there are today. -

Book Reviews 145 circumstances, as in his dealings with Polonius, and Rosencrantz and Guild- enstern. Did he not think he was killing the King when he killed Polonius? That too was a chance opportunity. Perhaps Hirsh becomes rather too confined by a rigorous logical analysis, and a literal reading of the texts he deals with. He tends to brush aside all alternatives with an appeal to a logical certainty that does not really exist. A dramatist like Shakespeare is always interested in the dramatic potential of the moment, and may not always be thinking in terms of plot. (But as I suggest above, the textual evidence from plot is ambiguous in the scene.) Perhaps the sentimentalisation of Hamlet’s character (which the author rightly dwells on) is the cause for so many unlikely post-renaissance interpretations of this celebrated soliloquy. But logical rigour can only take us so far, and Hamlet, unlike Brutus, for example, does not think in logical, but emotional terms. ‘How all occasions do inform against me / And spur my dull revenge’ he remarks. For Claire Jowitt, Lecturer in Renaissance literature at University of Wales Aberystwyth, travel drama depicts the exotic and the foreign, but also reveals anxieties about the local and the domestic. In this her first book, Jowitt, using largely new historicist methodology, approaches early modern travel plays as allegories engaged with a discourse of colonialism, and looks in particular for ways in which they depict English concerns about gender, leadership, and national identity. -

Even though the audience laughed, for me, it didn’t feel like a comedy. He is a desperately unhappy man – a fortune spent on therapy would only scratch the surface of his troubles. He can’t smile, he can’t express his feelings; he is angry and repressed and deluded and intolerant, driven by hate and a warped sense of self-importance. His psychiatric problems seem curiously modern. Freud would have had a field day with him. So this troubled man is placed in a comedy of love and mistaken identity. Of course, his role in Twelfth Night would have meant something very different to an Elizabethan audience, but this is now – and his meaning has become complicated by our modern understanding of mental illness and madness. On stage in Twelfth Night, I found the audience’s laughter difficult to take. Malvolio suffers the thing we most dread – to be ridiculed when he is at his most vulnerable. He has no resolution, no happy ending, no sense of justice. His last words are about revenge and then he is gone. This, then, felt like the perfect place to start with his story. My play begins where Shakespeare’s play ends. We see Malvolio how he is at the end of Twelfth Night and, in the course of I, Malvolio, he repairs himself to the state we might have seen him in at the beginning. -

The Tempest: Synopsis By Jo Miller, Grand Valley Shakespeare Festival Dramaturg Long ago and far away, Prospero, the Duke of Milan, pursued the contemplative life of study while turning the administration of his Dukedom over to his brother [in our play a sister, Antonia], who, greedy for power, made a deal with the King of Naples to pay tribute to the King in exchange for help in usurping Prospero’s title. Together they banished Prospero from Milan, thrusting him out to sea in a rotten, leaky boat with his infant daughter, Miranda. Miraculously, the father and daughter survived and were marooned on an island where Sycorax, an evil witch who died after giving birth to Caliban, had also been exiled. Caliban is thus the only native inhabitant of the isle besides the spirit, Ariel, and his fellow airy beings. For twelve years now, Prospero and Miranda have lived in exile on this island, with Prospero as its de facto king, ruling over Caliban and all the spirits as his slaves, while he has nurtured Miranda and cultivated his powerful magic. At the moment play begins, that same King of Naples and his son Prince Ferdinand, along with the King’s brother [here a sister, Sebastiana], Prospero’s sister, Antonia, and the whole royal court, are sailing home from having given the Princess Claribel in marriage to the King of Tunis. Prospero conjures up a mighty tempest, which wrecks the King’s boat on the island, separating the mariners from the royal party, and isolating Ferdinand so that the King believes him drowned. -

The Tempest Summary: a Magical Storm
The Tempest Summary: A Magical Storm The Tempest begins on a boat, tossed about in a storm. Aboard is Alonso the King of Naples, Ferdinand (his son), Sebastian (his brother), Antonio the usurping Duke of Milan, Gonzalo, Adrian, Francisco, Trinculo and Stefano. Miranda, who has been watching the ship at sea, is distraught at the thought of lost lives. The storm was created by her father, the magical Prospero, who reassures Miranda that all will be well. Prospero explains how they came to live on this island: they were once part of Milan’s nobility – he was a Duke and Miranda the baby princess. However, Prospero’s brother (Antonio) exiled them – they were placed on a boat and banished, never to be seen again. Prospero summons Ariel, his servant spirit. Ariel explains that he has carried out Prospero’s orders: he destroyed the ship and dispersed its passengers across the island. Prospero instructs Ariel to be invisible and spy on them. Ariel asks when he will be freed and Prospero chastises him for being ungrateful, promising to free him soon, when his work is done. Caliban: Man or Monster? Prospero decides to visit his other servant, Caliban, but Miranda is reluctant, describing him as a monster. Prospero agrees that Caliban can be rude and unpleasant, but is invaluable for the menial tasks he performs for them. When Prospero and Miranda meet Caliban, we learn that he is native to the island, but Prospero turned him into a slave raising issues about morality and fairness in the play. Love at First Sight Ferdinand stumbles across Miranda and they fall in love and decide to marry. -

2952 Early Theatre 20.2 (2017), 77–98 http://dx.doi.org/10.12745/et.20.2.2952 John Kuhn Sejanus, the King’s Men Altar Scenes, and the Theatrical Production of Paganism This article traces the lineage of the popular performance set-piece of the ‘oracular altar scene’ from its inception in Jonson’s Sejanus through its frequent reuse by the King’s Men and their imitators later in the century. By doing so, it demonstrates how material practices of reuse in the seventeenth-century theatre helped shape the produc- tion of popular knowledge about the nature of ‘pagan’ ritual and its practitioners in the Stuart era of intensified antiquarian discovery and colonial expansion. The fifth act of Ben Jonson’s Sejanus, a Jacobean tragedy set in decadent imper- ial Rome, contains a striking moment of intersection between antiquarianism and performance, as the play’s scheming, eponymous favourite agrees to propiti- ate a statue of the goddess Fortuna, grudgingly seeking divine advice about his political fortunes. Accompanied by the music of flutes and trumpets, a priest incants lines translated from Seneca while performing complex rituals of lustra- tion (washing his hands), libation (eating and administering honey and milk to the participants), and propitiation (placing milk, honey, and burning poppy on the altar bearing Fortuna’s statue), all as Sejanus looks on. Surprisingly, these distinctly alien, non-Christian religious rites produce true future knowledge: the hitherto sessile statue of the goddess (probably a company member in a statue costume) miraculously becomes animated and turns her face away. The predic- tion implied by this silent rejection — that Sejanus has lost her favour and his luck has run out — is quickly vindicated for the audience in the next scene, when the favourite’s downfall begins. -

Double Erasure in The Tempest: Miranda in Postmodern Critical Discourse1 Sofía Muñoz Valdivieso UNIVERSIDAD DE MÁLAGA [email protected] Miranda is the only female character present in The Tempest, but she has a paradoxical role as the dependent female who is however crucial for the dynamics of power in the play. Political readings of Shakespeare’s plays over the last thirty years have tended to side always with the victims of the power structures represented in each play. In the case of The Tempest, the predominant readings of what we will call the Postmodern paradigm in Shakespearean studies have sided with Caliban as the victim of colonial oppression. We could say that the text of the play erases Miranda as the virtuous and rather bland daughter whose main role is to obey her father and serve his purposes. What I am calling the double erasure of Miranda in The Tempest is my sense that she has also been frequently neglected in recent political readings of the play, which have centered their analysis of its power scheme on the issue of colonialism. Thus they have seen Caliban as a symbol of the exploited native but have often underplayed or ignored the specific repression of Miranda. It is clear that from a feminist perspective the power scheme in The Tempest must be opposed from an anticolonialist stand that also takes into account gender issues. The contributions of Postmodern criticism to our reading of The Tempest have emphasized aspects of the play before unacknowledged and they have shaped what could be called a new paradigm in Shakespearean studies. -

Received 6 March, 2015; Accepted 25 April 2016 This study aims to analyze the identity formation of the characters in Shakespeare’s play The Tempest in terms of psychoanalytic theories of identity. It also aims to portray the patriarchal dominance over the marginalized characters and the shifting process of identification through the interpellation of the society. Since this process carries the potential to reveal the universal effects of the elements that nurture the identities of the individuals on a microcosmic scale, the play proves to be a perfect stage to explore the interactions between certain embodiments of identities. This research aims to explore the identity formation of the characters in The Tempest through psychoanalysis to reveal how the Western patriarchal ideology, mainly reflected through Prospero, subjugates and controls other formations of identity that fall beneath the social hierarchy as in the examples of Miranda, Ariel and Caliban. While Prospero stands as the main authority who rules the island, all other forms of identity seem to remain as mere subjects of his control. Though the play is presented as a romantic comedy, the findings in this study suggest that patriarchal ideology is stealthily reinforced through the notions of gender and identity. -

Page !1 Anger and Forgiveness in The Tempest and Cymbeline Introduction Anger, and its place in human relationships, has recently become a bit of a hot topic. With the rise of the alt-right on the right, the rise of neoliberalism on the left, and the increasing antagonism between those of differing political inclinations, the contemporary concern with anger, in both the public and academic domain, is entirely apt. Although this inquiry is particularly appropriate for contemporary times, questions surrounding anger and its place in human affairs are not new. The Iliad, for example, notably opens with the line, “Sing, O muse, of the rage of Achilles,” immediately establishing a general concern with Achilles with a particular focus on his rage. Seneca, the Roman philosopher, likewise takes up the topic in his philosophical work De Ira, where he discusses anger in relation to ethics. Contemporary concerns with anger and human relationships have predominately followed Seneca’s steps in relegating anger to the ethical realm. Some, as in the case of Rebecca Traister, have championed anger as a potential driving source for justice.1 While others, as in the case of Susanna Schrobsdorff, have denounced anger as a kind of illness to be addressed.2 The contemporary conversation surrounding anger and human relationships, then, has been mainly focused on the status of anger; very little attention has been given to the reparation of the human relationships that have, ostensibly, been damaged in such a way that would warrant anger. As has been previously noted, the concern with anger in relation to human affairs is not new. -

Those in baroque England, past the first burgeoning of Renaissance vision, were nevertheless making a literal New World abroad. Likewise, Shakespeare arrived at a vision both post-innocent and post-tragic. As they compared to tragic heroes, he down-sized the late play characters; still, he granted them a gentler end.
