Norway and Italy meet for the 14th time in UEFA EURO 2016 Group H, with past meetings suggesting that this should be a close encounter. Match background • Italy's record in 13 games against Norway is W6 D4 L3 (W2 D2 L1 in Italy; W1 D2 L2 in Oslo). The sides also met on neutral territory at the 1938, 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup, Italy winning all three matches by single-goal margins. • Since Italy beat Norway 3-1 in Oslo in a friendly on 27 May 1937 – the nations' first encounter and Italy's only away win to date – there has never been a margin of more than a goal between the sides. • In their most recent pairings, in 2006 World Cup qualifying, Marcello Lippi's Italy beat Åge Hareide's Norway 2-1 in Palermo on 4 September 2004, Luca Toni's 80th-minute strike winning the game after (1) and Daniele De Rossi (4) swapped early goals. Gianluigi Buffon put in a commanding performance as Italy earned a 0-0 draw in the Oslo return on 4 June 2005. • The sides' only previous UEFA European Championship meetings came in qualifying for the 1992 finals. Tore André Dahlum (4) and (25) set 's Norway on the path to a 2-1 home win in their first encounter on 5 June 1991, Salvatore Schillachi (77) pulling one back before fellow substitute was sent off for 's Italy. • The sides reconvened in Genoa on 13 November that year. Jahn Ivar Jakobsen (60) put Norway ahead, but – in their first game under Arrigo Sacchi – Italy salvaged a 1-1 draw, substitute Ruggiero Rizzitelli (83) striking back. • Italian clubs' record in 27 UEFA competition games against Norwegian sides' reads W19 D5 L3 (W11 D0 L2 at home – W8 D5 L1 in Norway). • Italy and Norway have met in ten UEFA youth and age-group tournaments with Italy boasting the record W6 D1 L3. Most recently, they drew 1-1 at the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Israel on 11 June 2013. Stefan Strandberg converted from the spot in the 90th minute for Norway, but fellow substitute Andrea Bertolacci equalised deep into added time.

6 Norway - Italy Tuesday 9 September 2014 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit Ullevaal Stadion, Oslo Head coach Per-Mathias Høgmo Date of birth: 1 December 1959 Nationality: Norwegian Playing career: Gratangen IL, FK Mjølner, Tromsø IL (twice), IFK Norrköping Coaching career: Gratangen IL, Tromsalden UIL, Tromsø IL (three times), Fossum IF, Moss FK, Norway (women), Norway Under-21, Rosenborg BK, Djurgårdens IF, Norway • An industrious winger, Høgmo's playing career peaked with a 1986 Norwegian Cup success with Tromsø; he then turned to coaching, leading local clubs and helping out with Norway's national youth teams. • Coached Norway's women's side from 1997, winning Olympic gold in 2000, before being asked to spearhead the men's Under-21 squad, a position he left in 2003. • Following a second spell in charge of Tromsø, Høgmo worked as a television pundit. A subsequent return to club football with Rosenborg in 2005 was ill-fated: he quit the next year, having been signed off with health problems. • Returned to coaching, again with Tromsø, in 2008, securing some solid league finishes and two attempts at UEFA Europa League qualifying before heading abroad for the first time in his career to take the reins at Swedish outfit Djurgården in 2013. • Appointed Norway coach in September 2013 after Egil Olsen agreed to step down, penning a four-year contract. Antonio Conte Date of birth: 31 July 1969 Nationality: Italian Playing career: US Lecce, Juventus Coaching career: AC Siena (assistant), USD Arezzo, AS Bari, Atalanta BC, AC Siena, Juventus, Italy • A combative and versatile midfielder, Conte also weighed in with his share of goals – usually spectacular. • Made debut with hometown club Lecce aged 16 in 1985/86 but was not a regular until 1988/89 when his side returned to the top flight after two seasons away. Joined Juventus in November 1991. • Spent the next 13 seasons at Juve, later describing the famous black-and-white shirt as his "second skin". Won five league titles, the UEFA Champions League in 1995/96 and the UEFA Cup in 1992/93 in addition to triumphs in the UEFA Super Cup, Italian Cup and a European/South American Cup, wearing the captain's armband from 1996. Capped 20 times by Italy, he was part of the squads that finished runners-up at the 1994 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2000. • Started coaching career as assistant at Siena in 2005, taking over side Arezzo the following season. After leading Bari and Siena to the top flight in 2009 and 2011 respectively, he signed a two-year contract with Juventus. • Wasted no time in revamping the squad and enjoyed a debut season to remember as the Bianconeri claimed the Scudetto without losing a single game, suffering their sole defeat of the season against SSC Napoli in the final. Guided Juventus to a second successive title in 2013 and made it three in a row the following year, before stepping down in July 2014. Appointed Italy coach on a two-year deal a month later.

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
