It is highly symbolic of the rich and long history of Ireland and the Irish people. OnOn toto TrimTrim Castle!Castle! Trim Castle is a Norman period castle in County Meath. It is among the best preserved Norman castles in Europe. It’s also the place where Mel Gibson shot much of the film Braveheart. We were able to go to the very top of the castle and view the village of Trim and its surroundings. It is over 5000 years old and is constructed of dry stones with two burial chambers and a large inner court. We were particularly interested in the gigantic portal dolmens that dot the landscape. Paddy is a native Irish speaker who has taught language and culture courses at the heritage center for many years. It is where Queen Medb and King Ailill ruled the royal house of Connaught over 2000 years ago. This long and steep climb ends at one of the most spectacular mountain top views in Ireland. At the top of Knocknarea is the tomb of Queen Meave. When visiting Meave’s Tomb you should bring a stone from home to add to the tomb—to keep the Queen inside! TheThe BurrenBurren Shane,Shane, aa BurrenBurren ecologistecologist Our guide on our day long hike up the Burren in western Ireland was Shane Conel, an ecologist from Ballyvahaughn. Shane taught us about the fragile and diverse environment of the Burren—a spectacular and eerie limestone landscape. He also took us to see a dry stone fort, a Norman keep, and an ancient holy well.
