LEADERSHIP TRAINING- ALTIUS (24/03/2018) NSS Volunteers were part of the intercollegiate leadership development programme at SH College Thevara conducted by ALTIUS on March 24, 2018. The programme included talks, games and other interactive sessions to bring about a positive change in every student and to develop their personality to become the leaders of tomorrow.

BREAK THE SILENCE- ANTI CORRUPTION CAMPAIGN (13/03/2018) Break the silence – NSS volunteers actively participated in the anti-corruption programme organized by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) of Ernakulum on March 13, 2018. Chief Justice of High court of Kerala and Superintendent of Police of VACB attended the programme. Inter collegiate competitions were conducted as part of the programme.

FR. ABRAHAM KALLARAKKAL MEMORIAL LECTURE (25/02/2018) Department of Sociology organised a Seminar on Women Empowerment: Socio- Legal Realities on 22-02-2017. The sessions were led by Dr. Ugin Gomez Joseph, Labour Welfare Commissioner, Ministry of Defence, Govt. of . Principal Fr. Prasant Palakkappillil presided over the function. Dr. Jose Kuriyedath CMI, Dr. Sibi Mathew, Dr. Sibi Zachariyas, Prof. R K Varghese also spoke on the occasion. A total of 110 delegates participated in the same.

The joint effort monitored the growth a saplings and issued more saplings. It is heartening to note that 90% of the saplings planted are surviving.

FRENCH INTERCOLLEGIATE FEST – LÁURORE (19/02/2018) Department of French organized L’ aurore 2018, an Intercollegiate fest for the first time in the history of the college on 17th February 2018. Prior to the fest, Emmanuel Samson, Attache for cooperation in French language had visited the college and had an interactive session with the students on the possibilities of higher studies in France. Various competitions were held as part of this fest.

ENERGY CONSERVATION RALLY AND AWARENESS SEMINAR (15/02/2018) As part of observing the National Energy Conservation Day on December 18, the Physics Association of Sacred Heart College conducted an Energy Conservation Rally. The Rally, in association with the NCC naval wing cadets, was flagged off by Boban Nedumparambil, Vice- Chair-person, Muncipality. Principal Fr. Prasant Palackappilil, Mr. Boban and Lt.Cdr.Dr.Sibi Mathew spoke. A street play was staged by NCC cadets, highlighting the relevance of energy conservation.

The fest spanned over three days from 15th February 2018 to 17th February 2018. It was aimed to enlighten the growing youth about the cultural art forms, heritage and old life style of Kerala. The fest included various exhibitions, symposium, competitions and the presentation of various art forms.

DR. CHERUVELI ENDOWMENT LECTURE (23/01/2018) Dr. Cheruvelil Endowment lecture was conducted on 23rd January 2018 by the Department of English. The lecture was centred on the topic ‘Reporting from Conflict Zones’. News reporter Nisha Jeby talked on reporting from conflict zones. Dr Cheruvelil is an alumnus of Sacred Heart college during 1953-55 and this endowment is his tribute to his alma mater.

PROF. K.V. THOMAS ENDOWMENT NATIONAL SEMINAR (15/01/2018) The 16th Prof. K.V Thomas Endowment Seminar on “Sustainable Energy Storage and Conservation” was organised on 15th to 16th January 2018 at the College. Central Electrochemical Research Director Dr. Vijayamohan K. Pillai inaugurated the event. The seminar, which was the result of the coordinated efforts of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), ANERT and K.V Thomas Endowment Trust witnessed presentations of eminent personalities.

Students from various colleges of the state participated in the events such as “Spell Bee”, “Drabble”, “Haiku”, “Soliloquio”, “LitaWizard”, “Expresso” and “Being You”.

TANDAV – COMMERCE FEST (11/01/2018) Tandav is an Inter Collegiate management and cultural fest organised by the Department of Commerce for the past 15 years. It gives a platform for students of other colleges to actively participate and exhibit their skills. It is completely planned and executed by the student’s right from organizing the management games and hoisting the students of other colleges. Initially Tandav started with a humble beginning in the year 2000 wherein it was a one day fest. Over the years it grew in size and now it is a two day event. The two-day fest was a blend of events like she entrepreneur, ad selfie, scrap auction, football and best manager.

The objective was to make the city a better place to live.

INSPIRE SCIENCE CAMP (13/01/2018) Inspire, a five-day Science Internship Camp organised by the Department of Physics in association with the Science and Technology Department of the Central Government was held from 9th to 13th January at the College. The camp was inaugurated by Kerala Fisheries University Vice Chancellor Dr. A. Ramachandran. The camp was an amalgam of laboratory sessions and walk and talk sessions. Lectures by prominent mentors such as S. S. Sastry of University of Hyderabad and Dr. K. R. Arun of IISER added insight to students.

The two-day fest, inaugurated by Alex K. Babu, MD of Hedge Group, was organised to give wings to the entrepreneurship skills of the young minds. It was a success with the participation of students from around 30 colleges. Also, various games were conducted as a part of the fest such as football match, spot dance, Budding Economist, Mock Press Competition, Economics quiz and treasure hunt.

BIOMYRIAD - ZOOLOGY FEST (06/01/2018) The Department of Zoology conducted their annual Fest ‘Genysys 2k18’ by the name ‘Biomyriad’ from 4th to 6th January 2018. The fest which centred on the theme “Biodiversity” witnessed the participation of 12 colleges. A Biodiversity Conservation Rally was coordinated from Thevara Junction to the College. Biomyriad was inaugurated by Dr. Joe Kizhakoodan, Princpal Scientist, CMFRI, Chennai. A talk on ‘Understanding Lobsters’ was the prime session of the Fest. Intercollegiate competitions including quiz, debate, power point presentation, poster designing, treasure hunt, photography, face painting were the highlights of the fest. The residents of the Govt. old age home, Thevara were special invitees.

The exhibition cum sale of different products such as processed food items, ornamental and medicinal plants, vegetable seedlings, mushrooms, chocolate products, vermi compost, bonsai, organic products, artificial flowers, greeting cards etc. were arranged on college portico and near cafeteria.

TALK ON INTERFERENCE AND DIFFRACTION USING LASER (21/12/2017) The Department of Physics organized a talk on “Inference and Diffraction using Laser” on 21st December 2017. The session was led by Oruganti S.K.S Sastri, Department of Physics and Astronomical Science, Central University of Himachal Pradesh and students actively participated in the session.

FR. AQUINAS QUIZ (12/12/2017) Department of Botany conducted Fr. Aquinas Inter collegiate Quiz Competition on 12th December 2017. Students from various colleges participated in the event. The event was a grant success.

After claning and clearing the area of waste, the volunteers planted trees and flowering plants. The landscape was curated suiting the topography so that the place would become an attractive garden from a waste dumping area. The initiative was undertaken as part of the SWATCH BHARATH MISSION

PADDY CULTIVATION AT ARYANKAVU CAMPUS (02/12/2017) NSS volunteers participated in the paddy cultivation activities at Arayankavu at the farm land owned by the college. Principal of the college and farmers from nearby places guided the volunteers to do the farming. The volunteers had undertaken the entire gamut of activities associated with paddy farming at different plots right from the preparation of field, planting, plucking out weeds etc.

OBSERVANCE OF WORLD AIDS DAY (01/12/2017) NSS observed the World Aids Day on December 1,2017 in association with the Southern Railway at the premises of Ernakulum Junction railway station. A flash mob was conducted at the railway platform and a pledge was administered along with the employees of railway, general public and railway travellers.

R SOFTWARE WORKSHOP (17/11/2017) Department of Statistics conducted a Workshop on “R-Software” on 17th November 2017. Students found the session very useful and informative.

Soumani Jain, Rev Fr. Prasanth Palakkappillil ,Councilors and other Dignitaries. The programme commenced with a rally from Thevara junction which was concluded by a flash mob that highlights the message to eradicate plastic carry bags. Plastic free pledge was taken by the volunteers, public and the dignitaries during the occasion.

ANIMATION WORKSHOP – COCOON (13/10/2017) SH School of Communications organized an animation workshop “Cocoon” 13th October 2017. Students from various departments participated in the workshop.

A rally was conducted propagating the importance of eye donation. The day witnessed many of the volunteers signing the declaration for eye donation. A blind room was created wherein a student entering the blind room would be literally blind due to the darkness of the room. The staff for guidance helped the students to touch and feel the substances which were kept on the table in that room. The students were not able to identify most of it. It provided the students to realize the importance of eyesight.

The workshop was organized in association with the British Council, Newton-Bhabha Funds and IISER Pune and was conducted as part of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Teacher Training workshop series. The workshop was attended by more than 140 faculty members from across the country.

SEMINAR ON SCRIPTING THE NATION CRITIQUE ON NATIONALIST DISCOURSES (04/10/2017) Fr. Abraham Kallarackal Memorial Seminar on ‘Scripting The Nation: Critique On Nationalist Discourses’ was held on 4th October 2017. The session was inaugurated by Rev. OBSERVANCE OF INTERNATIONAL OZONE DAY (21/09/2017) A series of events were organized in relation with Ozone Day observation in collaboration with Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE). The event saw the participation of a key personality Dr. P.Shaiju(Scientist, Dept of Chemical Oceanography, school of Marine Sciences, CUSAT, who graced the occasion by imparting knowledge onto the students regarding the problems caused by Ozone depletion in the recent years.

The volunteers came up with the initiative due to the increasing rate of accidents at this region and it was appreciated as one of the outstanding service that NSS unit rendered for the benefit of the Public at the Thevara.

KALA SEKHARANAM, KALA ORUKKAL AND KALASADHYA (02/09/2017) As a part of the Jaivam project NSS decided to collect ‘Kalas’ for preparing the ‘Kala Sadhya’. These ‘Kalas’ or weeds have a vital role in maintaining human health and preventing the occurrence of many diseases. The Volunteers collected ‘Kalas’ from the surroundings with the help and guidance of scientist Dr. E. SajeevKumar. It was a thrilling experience for all the volunteers as they explored every nook and corner of the surroundings, identified different categories of ‘Kalas’ and gathered them.

Sajeev Kumar, the man behind the sumptuous ‘Kala Sadya’, conducted a seminar titled ‘Annam = Oushadam’. Dr. Sajeev Kumar is a renowned scientist who researches on how to turn Ánnam’ into Óushadam’. He has a laboratory of his own to experiment his findings. He emphasized that “what we eat is what we are”. The disrupted food habits are the reasons that cause many of the diseases of our times. He added that the nature has cure for every disorder and disease.

JAIVA ARIVUKAL SEMINAR (02/09/2017)

Prof. V. M. George, Associate Professor of Sacred Heart College, Thevara and a farmer enlightened volunteers on the importance of farming. He shared the agriculture techniques to be followed for organic farming. He elaborated on employing predator-prey relation to control pests effectively.

POOVILI POOKKALAM – FLORAL CARPET (02/09/2017)

The volunteers collected different varieties of flowers and leaves that are indigenous, from the premises of the camp site and made ‘Onapookalam’.Pookkalam competition was judged by external judges.

WORKSHOP ON PRAKRITHI JEEVANAM (01/09/2017) K. M. Hilal the famed natural farming proponent conducted a session on natural farming. He is a passionate zero-budget natural farmer who encourages new breed entrepreneurs to pursue agriculture. “Farming has to be a full-time job to succeed”, said Hilal. He distinguished natural farming from organic farming. Natural farming is the eco-friendly technique that was practiced in Kerala using only natural manure like green leaves, cow dung etc. The interactive session was vibrant with many questions raised by the curious minds. It was an ideal beginning to the ‘Jaivam’ project of NSS.

After a day of hectic activity, a ‘NaadanPaattuKalari’ was organized for the NSS volunteers. Dr. Eby T. G. of the Department of Chemistry, Sacred Heart College, Thevara led the team. It was a stress relieving session for the volunteers.

YOGA SESSION (02/09/2017)

Yoga enlivens human body and keeps people mentally and physically lively and dynamic. Every day morning Yoga sessions were conducted for the NSS volunteers. Program officer, Dr. Remya Ramachandran led the sessions.

JAIVA KRISHI - ORGANIC FARMING (02/09/2017) The NSS volunteers collected banana saplings from the premises of camp site and planted the saplings properly under the guidance of the farmers from nearby places. Volunteers also did watering and manuring the saplings daily till leaving the camp site. The volunteers had handed over the task of maintaining the saplings to the students of Bhavans Newsprint Vidyalaya after the camp.

THERUVARANGU (01/09/2017) Flash mobs have the power to invite attention of a crowd instantly. To grab the attention of public to the objectives of the camp, the volunteers decided to conduct a flash mob under the title ‘Theruvarangu’. It was performed at different parts of the Panchayat. The performance was followed by an explanation on the objectives of Jaivam Project to the gathering.

NSS volunteers visited the old age home at Thevara and celebrated Independence day with them with a variety of cultural programmes. The programmes were inaugurated by Sri. Harisree Ashokan (Cine Artist). The City Pink Police Team also joined the NSS volunteers in the celebration.

Prof. Dept. of Computer Science, RSET on 11.08.2017. She delivered a talk on ‘New Technologies in Computer Science’. She has given an interactive session on new technologies. The session was very interesting and informative. Principal Rev. Dr. Prasant Palackappillil CMI delivered the presidential address. He appreciated the department for its vibrant activities and endeavours in the previous years.

PATRIOTIC SONG COMPETITION (10/08/2017) Department of English organized a patriotic song competition as part of Independence Day celebrations. Different teams from the college participated in the competition.

As part of this programme volunteers conducted tableau, skit, exhibition and a candle light procession.

SWACHTHA PAKHWADA CAMPUS CLEANING (02/08/2017) As part of campus cleaning campaigns, about 100 NSS volunteers made a 4 –day intensive effort to clean the class rooms, laboratories, library, auditoriums, grounds and toilets, touching every nook and corner of the campus.

Department of Environment Studies observed National Tree Day on 01st August 2017. As part of this programme a poster exhibition was conducted. Students from different departments participated in the event.

PARIHARAM- CAMP FOR MIGRANT LABOURERS (29/07/2017) NSS volunteers associated with District administration for the conduct of the camp addressing Migrant labour issues at Perumbavoor. 15 NSS volunteers who are good at handling different languages including Hindi, Panjabi,Tamil,Bengali,English and Malayalam have been involved in the day long camp led by the District Collector.

WORLD POPULATION DAY- PHOTO AND POSTER EXHIBITION (11/07/2017) The day was observed by poster and photo exhibition and wide spread awareness campaign at the campus. As part of creating awareness regarding the impending scarcity, NSS Volunteers collected food packets in a massive way through students of the college and distributed it to needy people in and around the city of Kochi.

Department of Statistics observed National Statistics Day on 29th June 2017. As part of the event students organized a poster exhibition. Fr.Principal addressed the students.

ANTIDRUG CAMPAIGNING (26/06/2017) NSS volunteers in association with the Red Cross Society and St. Johns Ambulance (India) conducted awareness rally at different parts of Ernakulam City with the message“Say no to drugs”. The volunteers also gave awareness through door –to-door campaign. The programme was noticed for the particpation of the general public including visiting foreigners in the campaign.
