Green Party welcomes proposal to increase capital gains tax 12 November 2020 The Green Party has welcomed a report from the Office of Tax Simplification which suggested an increase in capital gains tax could raise £14bn. [1] Green Party finance spokesperson Molly Scott Cato said: “We agree with the Office of Tax Simplification that the current tax system encourages people to exploit tax loopholes to minimize their liabilities. We would support the Chancellor in reversing the cuts to capital gains tax begun under Gordon Brown. “Our policy of a Unified Income Tax goes a step further, consolidating all taxes on personal income into a single tax, closing many loopholes, and making avoidance and evasion more difficult. It would ensure that people pay the same rate of tax on income from assets as on income from employment.” Professor Scott Cato, who worked extensively on tax policy during her time in the European Parliament, added: “While the yields from such a change would be relatively modest, it would be a clear indication that the costs of the pandemic will be shared fairly.” Deputy Leader Amelia Womack said: “The pandemic has revealed the depth of inequality in society and it is vital that the costs of this crisis are borne by those with the widest shoulders, unlike after the financial crisis when the rich gained in wealth while the poor became poorer. “As well as increasing capital gains tax we need to look towards those who have seen windfall profits during the pandemic and introduce windfall taxes on tech companies and on their owners and shareholders.” ENDS Notes 1 https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ots-capital-gains-tax-review-simpl ifying-by-design Tweet Back to main news page Let’s block ads! [1] Labour conference defeated the motion after it was sent to a card vote. This came after 150 Constituency Labour Parties submitted motions on the topic and more than 83% of members previously said they support the idea. 20th May 2020 Dear Mr Speaker, cc: House of Commons Commission As parliament considers returning to Westminster, we urge you to ensure all citizens can continue to be represented in parliament through ensuring no MP is unable to participate due to health or caring commitments that have arisen as a direct result of the ongoing coronavirus crisis. We welcome the introduction of hybrid parliament to ensure the continuation of parliamentary scrutiny during lockdown. This is critical to a healthy, legitimate democracy. We also recognise the importance of restoring all forms of parliamentary scrutiny including Westminster hall debates and interventions as well as enabling the participation of more MPs in debates, and the challenges in doing so whilst maintaining a safe workspace for all concerned. As social distancing measures are reduced in a phased manner this summer, we are concerned that there is a risk of creating two tiers of MPs- those who are able to attend and those who mostly cannot given the ongoing challenges of lockdown and their own personal circumstances. Given what is known about the nature of this virus, and who is a high risk, it is likely that this will mean those MPs who are BAME MPs, older MPs or MPs who are pregnant will be disproportionately restricted. Government advice also recognises that those with caring responsibilities, those with childcare responsibilities, those who rely on public transport, and those who are shielding, may not be able to return to the workplace. Not only must parliament lead by example by acknowledging how these issues affect all those who work in Westminster and promoting working remotely where possible, it must also make provision for those who would be breaching public health advice by returning to parliament, or are unable to do so due to caring responsibilities.
