Underneath the lithosphere, the more volatile core of the earth has a degree of fluidity, not unlike a frozen over lake. Inertia says the plates want to stay in place, but the movement from the core wants them to pull apart and move creating, along these overlapping fault lines, remarkable pressure. An earthquake occurs when the building pressure along these fault lines becomes too much and the plates succumb, letting go of their initial position and settling into a new one, wherein the process begins again, a constant evolution of pressure and release. Some environmentalists see the climate through a similar lens. The earth has a place of balance that it wants to maintain. And then outside factors slowly move the earth’s environment away from its position of balance, creating increasing pressure. That increasing pressure is indicated by a rising global temperature, and increased severity of storms, and a rising sea level. And while, for a time, the environment will hold, eventually there will be a massive release that puts us back into original balance. Fossil records tell us that this has happened before, and data now indicates that we are fast approaching another. I’m Midwestern, which means that generally, as a family, we don’t deal particularly directly with our problems. It’s somehow impolite to talk too much about anything that might be creating pressure on the relationship. This Christmas, with a wide political spectrum represented, and a sibling living at home with the parents, and a frightening injury we are still recovering from, there was, indeed, an increase to the normal pressure of the familial situation. And there were, indeed, some little earthquakes – momentary bursts coming, seemingly out of nowhere and startling the dinner table. Fortunately no irreparable release, but I could
