John Ford Birth Name: John Martin Feeney (Sean Aloysius O'Fearna) Director, Producer Birth Feb 1, 1895 (Cape Elizabeth, ME) Death Aug 31, 1973 (Palm Desert, CA) Genres Drama, Western, Romance, Comedy Maine-born John Ford originally went to Hollywood in the shadow of his older brother, Francis, an actor/writer/director who had worked on Broadway. Originally a laborer, propman's assistant, and occasional stuntman for his brother, he rose to became an assistant director and supporting actor before turning to directing in 1917. Ford became best known for his Westerns, of which he made dozens through the 1920s, but he didn't achieve status as a major director until the mid-'30s, when his films for RKO (The Lost Patrol [1934], The Informer [1935]), 20th Century Fox (Young Mr. Lincoln [1939], The Grapes of Wrath [1940]), and Walter Wanger (Stagecoach [1939]), won over the public, the critics, and earned various Oscars and Academy nominations. His 1940s films included one military-produced documentary co-directed by Ford and cinematographer Gregg Toland, December 7th (1943), which creaks badly today (especially compared with Frank Capra's Why We Fight series); a major war film (They Were Expendable [1945]); the historically-based drama My Darling Clementine (1946); and the "cavalry trilogy" of Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), and Rio Grande (1950), each of which starred John Wayne. My Darling Clementine and the cavalry trilogy contain some of the most powerful images of the American West ever shot, and are considered definitive examples of the Western. Ford also had a weakness for Irish and Gaelic subject matter, in which a great degree of sentimentality was evident, most notably How Green Was My Valley (1941) and The Quiet Man (1952), which was his most personal film, and one of his most popular. -

THE COLORADO MAGAZINE Published bi-monthly by The State Historical Society of Colorado Vol.XIX Denver, Colorado, May, 1942 No. 3 Highlights in the History of Fort Logan ROBERT PFANNER* In the words of an olcl Denver newspaperman, ''The snow was flying in feathery clouds and the wind was whistling a tune of Icy, Icy, Drear and Shivery" when the first troops arrived at the camp on Bear Creek, October 22, 1887. The tepee-like tents were set up in two rows; around the low side-walls, earth was banked up to keep out the wind, and fires were kindled in the conical stoves of sheet-iron. Down by the creek, the cooks were busy about the stoves which they had improvised with no tool but a shovel. A low, vertical wall was first dug out of the sloping bank; a fiat top was cut back to proper width; fire-boxes were hollowed out from the front and con nected with holes dug down from the top. Iron tent pins were laid across the upper holes to support the kettles and pans, and Presto! -a field kitchen built on the spot. When chow was ready, it was "help yourself and go as you please" for a pint of black coffee, some fried potatoes and a villainous dish of hard tack and onions smothered in bacon gravy.1 Compare that diet with a typical meal served today at Fort Logan : roast beef, mashed potatoes, carrots, cabbage slaw, lettuce salad, bread and biitter, stewed raisins, and coffee. On the Monday after the troops arrived, the first train pulled into the little camp, with important ~upplies from Fort Leaven worth. -

Her husband again buried himself in his book, but not without a mild wonderment that three days out from New York his countess should suddenly have realized an admiration for the very buildings she had but recently characterized as horrid. Presently the count put down his book. "It is very tiresome, Olga," he said. "I think that I shall hunt up some others who may be equally bored, and see if we cannot find enough for a game of cards." "You are not very gallant, my husband," replied the young woman, smiling, "but as I am equally bored I can forgive you. Go and play at your tiresome old cards, then, if you will." When he had gone she let her eyes wander slyly to the figure of a tall young man stretched lazily in a chair not far distant. "MAGNIFIQUE!" she breathed once more.
