DESIGNER’S MESSAGE

لا حمد لله رب لعالمين و الصال ة و السال م على أشرف المرسلين محمد صلى الله عليه و سلم و على أله و أصحابه أجمعين

Dear Brothers and Sisters, السالم عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته Asalaam Alaikum Warahmatullaahi Wabarakaatuh

:who has bestowed us with this Kalimah سبحانه وتعالى All praise and thanks is due to Allah الإلله إال الله محمد رسول الله

Firstly, I would like to thank our school’s Principal Brother Qadri for yet again giving me the opportunity to continue designing and customizing our school’s agenda/yearly planner book. Alhamdulillah, this is our tenth edition and we are very pleased to see the continuation of the combined format of ONE agenda book for both Madresatul Banaat Almuslimaat’s (M.B.A) and Madresatul Atfaal Almuslimeen’s (M.A.A) students.

First and fore mostly the main purpose of the agenda book is to be used as a planner, to aid the student with time management, organization and study skills. It must be emphasized once again however that for our M.A.A students, parents and/or guardians must first look over the agenda book and then assist their children in completing the books on a daily basis. It would be beneficial for parents to take a few minutes each day to go over and explain the weekly hadith or quote with their children as well as review their homework assignments. At the end of the week, parents can sign and write comments in the agenda books after reviewing their children’s progress.

The M.B.A/M.A.A agenda is not only meant to be an academic planner, but it is also meant to be an “Islamic planner” as well, as it also has very useful features in it such as ahadith and tips pertaining to both religious and worldly matters. We kindly ask that you carefully read the next page to guide you on the proper use of this agenda book as both an academic and Islamic planner, Insha Allah.

On closing, I would like to ask Allah (SWT) to forgive me for any mistakes that I may have made and humbly request the readers to forgive me as well. May Allah (SWT) guide us all on the right path-to achieve success in this life so we can be successful in the life in the Hereafter Insha Allah. We are always open to feedback so if there is anything you would like to see changed or included in next year’s agenda edition, please contact us and we will be happy to discuss it in further detail Insha Allah.

I sincerely hope that our dear Banaat and Atfaal students will benefit from this agenda book yet again and that it will motivate them and help them improve their study, time management, and organization skills, and more importantly also help improve themselves to become the best Muslims they can ever be. It is my heartfelt wish that our students can benefit from the Islamic knowledge contained within this agenda book, as I myself have once again learned so much while designing it. May Allah (SWT) give us all the taufeeq to increase our Islamic knowledge, and more importantly, practice it and act upon it in our everyday lives so we can become the best Muslims in the sight of our Creator, Almighty Allah (SWT). Ameen.

Enjoy and best wishes for another successful academic year!

Jazak Allah Khayran

HOW TO USE THIS AGENDA BOOK

Listed below are the main sections and features of this agenda book, and how each can help for a well organized, successful school year and also help in developing good habits to become the best Muslims we can be, Insha Allah!

ACADEMIC PLANNER

Students will find the following customized features useful and should use all of these to receive the full benefit of the agenda book:

 A section at the beginning of the agenda that contains the history, mission and facts about our school which are especially useful to new students;  A section containing the school code of behaviour, including all relevant school policies (discipline, dress code, attendance, etc.) which all students, and their parents, should read carefully in the beginning of the school year and follow Insha Allah;  A reference section at the end of the agenda book which contains 1) useful information (i.e. equations and facts) to help students in subjects such as science, mathematics, geography and English and 2) note taking, binder, assignment preparation, bibliography and lab report tips  A monthly and weekly calendar which have useful features (described below);  A page for students to note down their timetable (which includes the subject, teacher and room number) can be found at the beginning of each term or semester for both M.A.A and M.B.A students (September and end of January);  For each month, students can keep track of their assignments, tests and quizzes in tracking tables so that they can remember due dates and start preparing well in advance;  An important dates reminder each month, which reminds students of important dates such as holidays and exam periods;  Space for writing assigned homework everyday;  Exam week alerts and study tips are included to help the students prepare for term/final exams;  A section for making a study plan before each set of exams can be found a few weeks before the exams start;  A weekly page that has a weekly progress section where teachers can write comments on the students’ progress and a parents section, where parents can review the teacher comments, write their own comments and sign it to ensure they are aware of their child’s progress;  For M.B.A and M. A. A students, a section for noting midterm and final marks can be found at the end of each semester/term (January and June) to allow the students and their parents to see the students’ progress from midterms to the final term;  There is also a section at the end which students can use to note down their special memories for the year such as special achievements, class mates names.

ISLAMIC PLANNER

The agenda also has the following features relating to Islam:  Continuing to following previous years’ agenda format, each monthly calendar page has both Gregorian and Islamic Hijri calendar dates and contains a useful hadith which introduces the student to the focus for the month;  Each weekly page contains a valuable hadith or quote that, if pondered upon, should no doubt bring great benefit to the student;  Each weekly page also has special tips/advice relating to the topic of focus for the month;  A “My Religious Practice (R. P) Check” section can be found at the end of each day, where students are encouraged to check and reflect on their religious practice as Muslims with respect to the following:  Performing salah-students should check off each salah as they pray it throughout the day; this will help them keep track of all prayers and motivate them to pray regularly and not miss any prayers Insha Allah;  Reading the Quran-students should check off the Quran box if they read the Holy Quran that day; this is meant to encourage students to develop the practice of reading our holy book everyday, even for a few minutes, even if it is a few ayahs or a page;  Doing dhikr-remembrance of Allah (SWT)- students should check off this box if they did dhikr during the day-even for a few minutes; this is meant to encourage students to develop the habit of remembrance of Allah on a daily basis by doing dhikr such as tasbeehat and astaghfar; students will learn the age appropriate types of dhikr for each grade from their Islamic Studies teachers Insha Allah;  Doing good deeds-students should check off this box if they did good deeds. If they did any bad deeds, the good deeds box should NOT be checked off and they should note that they did a bad deed; this is meant to encourage students to be aware of their actions and do many good deeds and avoid bad deeds on a regular basis, to develop the habit of enjoining good and forbidding evil Insha Allah;  Reciting Durood Shareef-sending blessings on our Holy Prophet (SAW)- students should check this box off if they read any durood shareef that day; this is meant to help students develop the practice of remembering and having love and respect for our Holy Prophet (SAW) and sending salams and blessings on him, Insha Allah. Students will learn the age appropriate types of durood shareef for each grade from their Islamic Studies teachers Insha Allah

Students can look at the good deeds & good habits checklist found at the end of this section, before the September calendar, to help them get started.

ABOUT US

Alhamdulillah, Madresatul Banaat Almuslimaat, the first Muslim girls school in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is a registered, non-profit, charitable organization duly approved and accredited by the Ontario Ministry of Education and Waqf Lillahi Taala, working for the welfare of the community. We provide Elementary and Secondary education from grades 6-12, for girls only.

Alhamdulillah, with the grace of Almighty Allah and with the generous support of our community, we now also provide Primary education from JK to grade 5, for boys and girls at the same location (under the same management), at our junior school, Madresatul Atfaal Almuslimeen (Muslim Children’s School).

More importantly, we emphasize imparting religious education to our students in addition to the approved curriculum of the Ontario Ministry of Education. Our students obtain sound religious education mainly through daily taleem, and through our formal Islamic studies curriculum which includes the study of , the Quran and various areas of Islam such as:

. Islamic Tadhib and Akhlaq (Etiquette) . Seerah [Biography of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW)] . Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) . Tafseer of the Quran (Translation and commentary of the Quran) . Ahadith [(sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW)] and . Shariah (Islamic Law)

Also, our students and staff collectively offer Dhuhr and Jumu’ah prayers in our gymnasium on a regular basis.

Attendance:

Attendance in all classes is compulsory and a full record of absences and lates is kept. Parental notes are required to explain all absences. Late/Missed Assignments:

As per the Growing Success document, p. 42-43, students are responsible for providing evidence of their achievement of the overall expectations within established timelines, and must be aware that there are consequences for not completing work, or submitting work late. All incidents of late/missed work will be taken seriously and will be dealt with promptly in a fair and consistent manner. Each incident will be handled on an individual case by case basis. All late submitted/missed work will be reported on the student report card as part of evaluation of students’ skills and work habits.

Students will be given additional and/or alternative opportunities to demonstrate their learning due to late or missed assignments, when possible and appropriate. Consequences for students who submit late work/fail to submit work, may range from deducted marks (10% of assignment marks is deducted due to late submission for no legitimate reason) at a minimum, to repeating the course (if a significant number of assignments/tests/ projects have not been submitted within reasonable deadlines). For further details about these policies, please refer to the school course calendar.

Punctuality:

It is very important for students to develop the habit of arriving at school on time. Students who come to school after 8:15 a.m. (M.B.A students)/8:45 a.m (M.A.A students) will be required to write the morning taleem (in full) and submit it to the office the following morning. Students who arrive later than 8:30 a.m. (M.B.A students)/9:00 a.m. (M.A.Astudents) will not be permitted to attend class. They will stay in the office where they will be required to write the morning taleem they missed. Students who are late three consecutive days will be sent home or possibly suspended. Teachers have the responsibility to deal with student lates. At the beginning of the school year, each teacher will inform students of the late policy for the class, including any disciplinary action(s) that might be taken.

Dress Code:

The school uniform for M.B.A students is a navy blue coloured Jilbaab/ with a two piece white . Any variations in the above will be dealt with strictly. Anyone who comes to school without her uniform will be sent home. All students are expected to strictly follow the Islamic dress code. Students must wear their uniform which should be neat and clean. Students must not wear any make-up, jewellery, skirts, high heels or slippers, T-shirts, sweatshirts or other items of clothing with unacceptable signs, pictures and/or slogans. There is no school uniform for M.A.A students; however, female students must wear a hijab and loose clothing (i.e. loose, long skirt or pants with a loose shirt, or etc.) and male students are NOT permitted to wear shorts.

Changes in Data:

Students must inform the main office of any change of name, address or telephone number. It is their responsibility to inform the office of any updates in credit information, for example, night school and correspondence courses (for M.B.A students).

Fees:

Tuition fees must be paid by the first of every month. A notice will be issued to students to stop attending classes if they do not pay their fees by the 5th of every month at the latest.

Lockers:

Lockers are assigned to fee-paying students for the year and are on a first come first serve basis for M.A.A students as we have a limited number of lockers for our junior students. It is recommended to students not to leave valuables in their lockers. Madresatul Banaat Almuslimaat/Madresatul Atfaal Almuslimeen is not responsible for the loss or theft of articles anywhere on school property including lockers. Upon the acceptance of the assignment of a locker, the student acknowledges that the locker is the property of Madresatul Banaat Almuslimaat/Madresatul Atfaal Almuslimeen and that the principal, or his designate, may enter and search the locker and its contents at any time, without prior consent of the student. Students must be aware of and abide by the locker rules.

They will gather their books and binders before their morning and afternoon classes. They will NOT be permitted to go to their lockers during class time

Discipline:

Students are obliged to act in a courteous manner to schoolmates and be respectful to all staff members. Inappropriate behaviour or misconduct with school mates and/or staff by a student, parent, guardian or any relative may lead the administration to expel the student and will give no legal remedy against the administration. The acceptance of reasonable discipline is as important to a student’s education as is the acquisition of skills or knowledge. Thus, students are expected to do as instructed at all times. Students have recourse to guidance counsellors or the school administration should they wish clarification of any school policy.

SUSPENSIONS AND EXPULSIONS:

The board strongly believes that positive approaches to acceptable behavior are usually more effective in promoting good behaviour. However, it is sometimes necessary to penalize students for violations of school regulations to ensure the good order of the school and a safe learning environment for all students, and to teach students the consequences of disruptive behavior. Students who indulge in disruptive behavior may be suspended or expelled. The principal may suspend a student from school for a period of 1-20 days for any reason listed in the following tables or for any conduct injurious to the moral tone of the school, or the physical and mental well being of other people. Following consultation with other management staff, the principal may expel a student from attending the school on the basis that the student’s poor conduct was injurious to other people.

Prior to this decision, the principal will conduct an investigation, and consider discretionary factors such as age, degree of harm, history, level of understanding, accommodation of special education needs as well as the mitigating circumstances (as set out in the Education Act). In addition, the principal will consider whether racial or other harassment predicated the student’s behaviour and whether the principles of progressive discipline have been followed. All these regulations, as set out in the Education Act, as well as other factors, will be used when determining the type and duration of the expulsion, regardless of whether expulsion is mandatory or discretionary.

Chewing gum is strictly prohibited in the school.

Lunchtime Guidelines and Rules:

At Madresatul Banaat Almuslimaat/Madresatul Atfaal Almuslimeen, students are expected to remain at school for the lunch period. Supervision of students during the lunch period is a challenging task for our small staff; therefore, we require that students be on good behavior and be respectful of their supervisors. Students must be aware that they are responsible to the school staff, supervisors and the principal during the lunch period. Students are expected to know and abide by the lunch time rules and procedures. A student who does not comply with lunch time procedures on a repeated basis is being defiant and can expect the lunch time supervisor to inform the principal or provide appropriate consequences. Consequences may include sending the student home and possible suspension.

To ensure further cleanliness, students are expected to keep the washroom clean. They should flush the toilet after use and see that the toilet seat is clean before they leave the washroom to avoid inconvenience to the next person. To maintain cleanliness of the wudu place, students should not make it dirty and avoid spilling outside the designated wudu area.

The consequences for a student who bullies, assaults or threatens another student or staff member will be a 5-20 days suspension from school which might lead to expulsion. Harassment, assault or threat of assault, verbal or physical, given by the parent/legal guardian to any staff member or student will also lead to expulsion of the student.

Students are encouraged to report to the school administration, any verbal or physical assault and any incidents of bullying that they themselves experience or observe in the school.

Security:

In order to maintain Madresatul Banaat Almuslimaat/Madresatul Atfaal Almuslimeen as a safe and secure environment, we expect students to answer in a courteous manner. Verbal abuse, intimidation, and physical fights are unacceptable at Madresatul Banaat Almuslimaat/Madreatul Atfaal Almuslimeen and will result in consequences for those involved. No weapons of any kind will be tolerated under any circumstances. Severe penalties will be imposed on a student in possession of a weapon. Unauthorized visitors will not be allowed on school premises. Guests must sign in at the front office before entering the school building.

Assemblies:

Assemblies may be held at various times during the school year to provide students with opportunities to participate in activities or events that would not normally be available to them. It is important that students behave in such a manner that brings credit to the school and community. Also, secondary students must act as good role models for the elementary students.

The school expects that:

(a) all students will attend assemblies that have been organized for them. (b) all students will remain in the gym/cafeteria during the assembly except in the case of an emergency. (c) students wishing to be excused from an assembly will request permission from the principal or vice-principal prior to the assembly.

Textbooks and Library Books:

Madresatul Banaat Almuslimaat/Madresatul Atfaal Almuslimeen has been fortunate that it has not been necessary to initiate a deposit fee for textbooks. In order to maintain this policy, students and parents must recognize that they are responsible for maintaining loaned texts in good condition. The cost of replacing texts not returned or damaged will be charged to the individual. Texts books and library books issued to students are the property of Madresatul Banaat Almuslimaat/Madresatul Atfaal Almuslimeen.

Spare Time:

If senior M.B.A students have a spare during class time, they should use the library, if available, front office area or another assigned area. They should not gather or sit in the halls during class time. This will keep the rest of the school quiet so that classes can continue.

School Boundary:

Students should not leave the school property during the school hours. Anyone who does this will face expulsion from the school.

Visitors:

Madresatul Banaat Almuslimaat/Madresatul Atfaal Almuslimeen is a place of serious study. We are not able to accommodate casual visitors at the school, and they will be asked to leave the premises. Invited guests must sign the visitor’s log book upon entering and when leaving the school building.

Parking:

We have a very small parking lot with few spaces available for students and visitors. Students must obtain a parking permit from the office in order to use the student parking lot. Students, parents or visitors who wish to park in our parking lot for short periods of time must abide by the parking rules below.

Parking Rules:  Absolutely NO parking/standing at the front of the school  Absolutely NO u-turns to be taken in the front parking area  Parents must bring their car to the back of the school and park there and quickly pick their children up from the gym entrance  NO double parking or blocking anyone at the back of the school

Failure to comply with these rules may result in a fine and possible loss of any parking space available to our school (students may then have to come to school by bus instead of by car). Madresatul Banaat Almuslimaat/ Madresatul Atfaal Almuslimeen cannot be held liable for damage to cars on school property.

 Keep ONE binder for each class/subject if possible

 Divide each binder (for each class) by units

 For each unit, keep a page in the beginning for a record of homework and tests/quizzes

 Always write the date, question and page numbers for homework on the top of the page before beginning the work

BINDER TIPS  Keep copies of your tests/assignments/quizzes at the end of each unit

 Keep your binder neat-secure any loose papers right away (i.e. hole punch them and put them in your binder)

 Always date and title your notes for each class

 Keep your notes neat

 Write the notes as written on the board

 Carefully listen to your teacher’s lesson and concentrate on what is being said

 Ask questions immediately if you require clarification about anything in the lesson

NOTE TAKING TIPS  Later, review your notes and write a summary of the main concepts/key points in your own words

 Make sure you fully understand what you are being asked to do-do you understand the purpose of the assignment and what is expected of you?

 Make sure you know and understand the mark breakdown (i.e. the marking scheme)-this often helps you to include all the essential points your teacher will be looking for when marking

 Start your assignment EARLY to ensure that you will have enough time to prepare a good quality assignment

 If choosing a topic, choose one that is quite specific and narrowed instead of a broad/general topic

ASSIGNMENT PREP TIPS  Write a rough outline of your assignment

 Research your subject thoroughly, taking good notes and keeping a list for your bibliography as you do your research (Don’t wait until the end-you may forget where you got your information!)

 Prepare a rough draft of your assignment and have someone look over it for you

 Edit and rewrite your assignment 1-2 more times until you are satisfied with it

 Make sure to check over the assignment for correct spelling and grammar

 Make sure your final draft looks neat

 Make sure to document any direct quotations or published ideas by including footnotes, endnotes and/or parenthetical citations

 Include a bibliography at the end

 If doing an essay, make sure to write in paragraphs: introduction, body and conclusion

 If doing a presentation, make sure to rehearse your presentation a few times before presenting to your class and ensure it stays within the time limits given

 If doing a poster or other visual type of project, make sure to use colour and space in the best way possible

 Don’t copy others-be CREATIVE AND ORIGINAL

 Make sure to hand in the assignment/project on TIME

Thus as you can see, cheating and plagiarism are indeed serious offences and it is important to duly acknowledge the work of others and do honest work yourself.

Always remember this: how would you feel if you worked really hard on something-it took you so much time and effort- and then within minutes someone else just took your work and called it her own? Think about it!!!

M.B.A/M.A.A Policies, Procedures & Consequences for Academic Dishonesty (Plagiarism and Cheating)

o As per Ontario Ministry of Education’s Growing Success document, p. 42, all student work submitted for assessment and evaluation must be the student’s own original work and plagiarism and cheating will not be allowed. o Any form of plagiarism or cheating will not be allowed at M.B.A o All incidents of plagiarism and cheating will be taken seriously and will be dealt with promptly in a fair and consistent manner; o Consequences for students who cheat or plagiarize will range from a zero mark (at minimum) to possible expulsion from the school.

As per Ministry of Education policy (Growing Success, p. 43), the grade level, maturity, individual circumstances of the student as well as the number and frequency of prior incidents will all be taken into account when determining the best consequence. Thus, each incident will be handled on an individual case by case basis.

TIPS ON HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM AND CHEATING….

1) make good research notes 2) paraphrase/summarize points in your own words 3) write appropriate citations within your writing 4) write an appropriate bibliography 5) develop good study and note taking skills 6) Study in advance so you are well prepared for your tests

For tips on how to summarize and properly cite (acknowledge) other people’s work refer to the following pages in your agenda book or ask one of your teachers for help!!!

3) Hypothesis

*The hypothesis is YOUR prediction (an educated guess) to the question stated in the purpose. *You will make a hypothesis based on your knowledge of the experiment to be conducted. Example: It is hypothesized that the order of reactivity, from greatest to least would be…

4) Materials

*This is a list of all the materials used in the investigation, from beakers, to chemicals, to equipment.

Example (incomplete):

Erlenmeyer Flask Sodium metal Wire gauze

5) Method

*This is a list, in order, of the steps you took to perform the investigation *It must include details, including variables that were controlled (where necessary) *Diagrams (of setting up an apparatus for example) may be included where necessary *Write it in present tense in your lab book and past tense when writing a lab report to hand in.

Example:

1. Set up five 50ml beakers containing 20ml distilled water. 2. Drop a piece of lithium metal in the first beaker. Record the observations. 3. Repeat step 2 with sodium and magnesium.

6) Results

*This is the section where you include all of your observations, both qualitative (how something looks or smells) and quantitative (how much something weighs or the volume, using appropriate units etc), with detail *use a table or chart to organize results *graph your results where appropriate *note any errors made during the investigation (e.g. if you spill some solution, changing the volume you were supposed to use)

7) Discussion

*This is where you summarize your results, interpret them and make conclusions about them *You should discuss your results in light of your hypothesis (were your results consistent with your hypothesis, and why or why not?) *Discuss experimental errors and how they may have affected your observations *Discuss any improvements that could be made *Answer any discussion questions given by your teacher in this section (without numbering the questions)

Other Points to Remember:

*Your lab book should have the following: -a title page (Name, Course Title and Course Code, Teacher’s Name) -a table of contents *you should always write the lab, from the title to the results, in your lab book, before you do the lab. After the lab is over, answer the discussion questions in your lab book. *For the results section, set up any charts or tables before hand so you will be ready to record your observations in your book when you do your lab *Check your lab book and report for any spelling or grammar errors, and be NEAT!

ASK YOUR SCIENCE TEACHER FOR A SAMPLE SCIENCE LAB REPORT FOR YOUR GRADE LEVEL!
