Dr. Albert W. Johnson June 29-30, 2009 interviewed by Susan Resnik for San Diego State University 208 minutes of recording total PART 1 OF 3 PARTS SUSAN RESNIK: This is Susan Resnik. Today is June 29, 2009. I’m in the lovely home of Dr. Albert W. Johnson, in Portland, Oregon. We are going to be doing his oral history as part of the project funded by the Jane and John Adams mini- grant. Good morning, Dr. Johnson. ALBERT W. JOHNSON: Good morning, Susan. SR: Dr. Johnson, you certainly made so many contributions to San Diego State University, spanning the presidencies of Dr. Love, Dr. Golding, and Dr. Day, and contributed so much, but we’d like to go back and start at the beginning. I’d like to know when and where you were born. Could you tell me a little about your early years? AWJ: Yes, thank you. I was born in a little town by the name of Belvidere, Illinois, a small agricultural community in northern Illinois, on July 29, 1926; and lived there all the time I was growing up, until I went into the military, which I can talk about later if you like; and then never did go back to live. And now, nobody from my family lives in Belvidere, Illinois. I had two parents, of course, Mother and Father. My mother was the daughter of a Lutheran minister in Belvidere, and played a very active role in the church herself. She was the organist, the choir directory, played the piano for all kinds of things, and of course raised the children. -

Fall 2011.Indd
Elmira College Center for Mark Twain Studies The Trouble Begins at Eight Fall 2011 Lecture Series Wednesday, September 21st in the Barn at Quarry Farm 8 p.m. “...the quietest of all quiet places...” Barbara E. Snedecor Elmira College In a letter to John Brown, a physician friend from Edin- burgh, Scotland, Clemens wrote: I wish you were here, to spend the summer with us. We are perched on a hill-top that over- looks a little world of green valleys, shining rivers, sumptuous for- ests, & billowy uplands veiled in the haze of distance. We have no neighbors. It is the quietest of all quiet places, & we are hermits that eschew caves & live in the sun. (June 22, 1876) Join Barbara Snedecor as she recounts in words and pictures the familiar tale of courtship, marriage, and of summers spent at Quarry Farm -- the quietest of all quiet places. Doors open at 7:30. The Trouble Begins at Eight. Wednesday, September 28th in the Barn at Quarry Farm 8 p.m. Mark Twain’s Nature in Roughing It, Naturally Michael Pratt Elmira College For most of us, the author Mark Twain is indelibly linked with his classic books about two ju- venile delinquents, Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer. The scenes of Tom flimflamming his buddies into whitewashing a fence and Huck and Jim floating down the river to freedom on a raft easily come to mind. What doesn’t pop into our heads, however, is Mark Twain’s writings about the natural world in its myriad forms. Read any of his travel books and you will find pages, even chapters, filled with his firsthand descriptions of and reactions to Nature’s realm. -

2007 Ghost Walk Ghosts Played by Jim Wellington, Gary Yoggy, Christine Gill and Joe Edkin
2007 Ghost Walk Ghosts played by Jim Wellington, Gary Yoggy, Christine Gill and Joe Edkin The Great Love Story of Samuel Clemens and Olivia Langdon My name is Katie Leary. You probably don't know who I was, and that is all right with me. I never sought fame or fortune, although I did attain some measure of both due to my connection with one of the most famous families of my time: that of Mr. Samuel Clemens (known better by his professional name of Mark Twain) and Miss Olivia Langdon. I was Miss Langdon's maid when Mr. Clemens courted her and I stayed at her side until the day she died. I remained with Mr. Clemens and their daughters for years after that. I'm sure you are all familiar with Mr. Clemens and his writing. I'm not here to tell you about that. Nor am I going to dwell on the unhappiness that befell Mr. Clemens and Miss Langdon. Every family must experience sadness, and Mr. Clemens was not immune: he outlived his brother, his wife, his son, and two of his three daughters. No, let us not spend our short time together this evening talking of tragedy. Instead, let me tell you one of the greatest love stories of my time, the story of the eternal devotion of Mr. Samuel Clemens held for the lovely Miss Olivia Langdon and their four children. The first time Samuel Clemens came to Elmira, it was at the invitation of Charley Langdon to spend a few days with the Langdon family.
