B R A N D S F E S T I V A L S 2 0 1 6 Posted in Events, Lifestyle, BMX, Lifestyle, Skateboarding, on 23rd June 2016 Glastonbury kicked off this week in all its muddy glory and we watched the traffic drama unfold from the comfort of our office. We've asked the SkateHut crew what there top picks are for festivals in 2016! Bestival | 8th – 11th September - Isle of Wight - Good music, top grub, and giant inflatables – who could ask for more? Bestival’s Ryde slide is back and faster than ever, for a £5 donation to charity you could be one of the lucky 600 who get to ride this giant water slide down Union Street. If water slides aren’t your thing, keep your eyes peeled for the biggest bouncy castle in the world (it should be hard to miss). All about the music: Bestival 2016 is bringing a mix of dance, alternative, grime and hip hop with standout acts like The Cure, Hot Chip, Skepta, Mura Masa and the Midlands own Lady Leshurr to name a few. Latitude | 14th – 17th July - Southwold, Suffolk - There’s a tent for every taste at Latitude this year. Comedy, crafts, poetry, literature, theatre and film – they’ve got the arts covered, and that’s not to mention the stellar music on offer. The festival is surrounded by woodlands, home to late night DJ sets for wired night owls. You can also check out the Lavish Big Screen, curated this year by whole host of punk royalty, showing a variety of shorts, films and music videos throughout the day. All about the music: As you would expect, this year’s line-up ticks a lot of genre boxes. You can expect The National, Slaves, Rat Boy, Laura Mvula, Lapsley and a not one but two tents dedicated to the best in future talent. Boardmasters | 10th – 14th August - Cornwall - If you’re looking for a coastal festival offering the best in surf, skate and music then Boardmasters is a must. If the setting alone doesn’t grab your interest, maybe the option to upgrade your camping in to a full on spa experience might persuade you. Boardmasters is also home to both the World Surf and longboard League Championships and Fistral Beach Skate competitions. All of this is in support of ‘Surfers Against Sewage’, a cause even land lovers can get behind. All about the music: Boardmasters 2016 is providing the perfect soundtrack to a weekend of sea, surf and skate with the likes of Chase and Status, Sigma, Wolf Alice, Dinosaur Pile-Up and Blossoms. Green Man | 18th – 21st August - Brecon Beacons - Want a dose of magic with you festival experience? Green Man’s got you covered. This mystical weekend is more of an adventure than a festival, and gives you the freedom to explore the beautiful Brecon Beacons as much as you want. Between adventures, you can fill your face with food and cider, dip in to a comedy show or even watch a film (Inside Out anyone?). All about the music: The soundtrack to your escape to Green Man features Belle & Sebastian, Laura Marling, Warpaint, and White Denim (an office favourite). NASS | 8th – 10th July - Bristol(ish) - The UK’s answer to Warped Tour, Nass is where you want to be for hearty dose of action sports. Skate wise, Nass has you covered for park and vert comps as well as an A-class line up of pro skate visitors. The Nass public park is free to use for riders of all abilities throughout the weekend. If BMX is more your thing, you can catch the BMX World Championships (this year featuring the legendary Mar Hoffman) or check out the public street park to hone your own skills or even. All about the music: this action packed festival delivers top music from Stormzy, Andy C, Jurrasic-5, Rat Boy and Modstep. The Zoo Project | 4th June – 24th September - Ibiza - If you’re looking to go further afield for your festival fix then we recommend the Zoo Project in Ibiza. The Zoo Project delivers a healthy dose of sunshine as well as a party that reaches on well in to the early hours. Zoo spans 4 outdoors arenas with music, performances, a swimming pool, market stalls, great food and secret gardens – all made from reclaimed materials. This festival is all about performance and getting everyone involved in the feel good party vibes. All about the music: you can expect a selection of party anthems from the likes of Cinnaman, Frank Storm, Robin Ordell and Shanti Celeste. • Class, Race, Credibility, and Authenticity Within the Hip-Hop Music Genre
Journal of Sociological Research ISSN 1948-5468 2013, Vol. 4, No.2 Class, Race, Credibility, and Authenticity within the Hip-Hop Music Genre Matthew R. Hodgman Dept. of General Education, Goodwin College 1 Riverside Drive, East Hartford, CT, 06118, USA Tel: 1-860-528-4111 E-mail: [email protected] Doi:10.5296/jsr.v4i2.4503 URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.5296/jsr.v4i2.4503 Abstract After its advent in the 1970s, the rap music genre was represented almost exclusively by male black artists who honestly and realistically embodied a poor urban image. Images of black urban poverty in music videos and rap lyrics were consistently used by black artists to emphasize and authenticate who they were and where they came from. With the upsurge of white rap acts starting in the early 90s and continuing through the early 21st century, the means by which rap authenticity is measured have been permanently renegotiated. Before the emergence of white rappers, race was the primary signifier of rapper authenticity. After the success of white rappers such as Eminem new parameters of what constitute credibility and authenticity in the rap genre have been forged. This article discusses the significance of the continued presence of white rappers in hip-hop in terms of class and race in relation to artistic credibility within the rap genre. On a larger scale, this article considers questions related to cultural interloping upon a racially concentrated art form. It is concluded that class has generally emerged as the premier indicator or variable of authenticity throughout rap. Keywords: rap music, hip-hop music, Eminem, cultural studies, class studies 1.

David Laws Word Count: 23889 1 2 Glossary The Met – Metropolitan Police COLP – City of London Police Scene – London-based community of actors that actively consumes and produces social and behavioural norms associated with grime music and the demographic of people that use grime music as a part of their identity in London. Grime’s socio-economic circumstances – Poverty, violence, drugs, segregation. Grime’s socio-political circumstances – Segregation, racial and aesthetic profiling, societal disregard, the harsh policing of the scene’s events. CCCS – Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies Locked off – Shut down Acknowledgements This research and thesis would not have been possible without the educated, informative and passionate voices of those within the London grime scene. Their understandings of their own circumstances reinforced the importance of this research for me, as a researcher, and London society. I was genuinely shocked in my interactions with these people about the sophisticated manner in which these people articulated themselves and interacted with me, an outsider. It is with this knowledge that I commend my interviewees for their willingness to speak and their vast knowledge. Finally, I’d like to thank dr. Polly Pallister-Wilkins for her willingness and ability to challenge my thinking, engaging with me in both the complex and seemingly trivial issues of this research project.
