The method comprises administering to the plant a composition comprising an amount of a methionine compound that results in an increase in plant growth or yield compared to the growth or yield of the plant without the administration of the methionine compound. METHODS FOR INCREASING GROWTH AND YIELD OF PLANTS WITH METHIONINE COMPOUNDS FIELD OF THE INVENTION [0001] The invention provides methods for enhancing the growth and yield of plants by administering methionine compounds to the plant. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION [0002] Under natural growth conditions, plants use nutrients from the soil, water and solar energy to produce all the compounds needed for vegetative and productive development. Unfavorable weather conditions, poor soil fertility, pest attacks or diseases may impair the complicated metabolic processes of the plant, resulting in slower development and reduced yields, especially under intensive crop production techniques. Supplementing plants with compounds to help the plant overcome these stresses, as such, may provide a means to increase plant growth and yield. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION [0003] Accordingly, one aspect of the invention encompasses a method for increasing the growth or yield of a plant. The method comprises administering to the plant a composition comprising an amount of a methionine compound that results in an increase in plant growth or yield compared to the growth or yield of the plant without the administration of the methionine compound. [0004] Other aspects and iterations of the invention are described more thoroughly below. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION [0005] The present invention provides compositions and methods for providing a methionine compound to a plant. Typically, the methionine compound increases the growth and/or yield of the plant. Suitable methionine compounds are described below. (I) Methionine Compounds [0006] One aspect of the invention encompasses compounds having a methionine derivative or methionine analog (hereinafter referred to as "methionine compound"). (a) Methionine Sulfoxides and Sulfones [0007] In one embodiment, the methionine compound is a methionine sulfoxide or methionine sulfone having formula (I): wherein: * is a chiral carbon; R1 is methyl or ethyl; R2 is oxygen or hydrogen; R3 is an acyl group or hydrogen; and n is an integer from 1 to 3 . [0008] Compounds corresponding to formula (I) may be a methionine sulfoxide (i.e., when R2 is hydrogen) or a methionine sulfone (i.e., when R2 is oxygen). Depending upon the embodiment, the compound having formula (I) may be normethionine (i.e., n is 1), methionine (i.e., n is 2) or homomethionine (i.e., n is 3). In certain embodiments, when R3 is an acyl group, the compound having formula (I) may be an acetyl methionine sulfoxide or an acetyl methionine sulfone. Examples of suitable acyl groups include formyl, acetyl, propionyl and succinyl. Exemplary acyl groups are formyl and acetyl. The compound having formula (I) may also be an ester derivative. Examples of suitable ester derivatives include methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, and butyl esters. For each embodiment with compounds having formula (I), both the D- and L-isomers are included within the scope of the invention. The invention also encompasses salts of compounds having formula (I). Suitable examples of salts include ammonium salts, alkaline earth metal salts (e.g., magnesium and calcium), alkali metal salts (e.g., lithium, sodium, and potassium), copper salts, zinc salts, cobalt salts, chromium salts, manganese salts, and iron salts. [0009] In one embodiment, the compound having formula (I) is L- methionine sulfoxide or D-methionine sulfoxide (i.e., Ri is methyl; R2 is hydrogen, R3 is hydrogen and n is 2). In an alternative embodiment, the compound having formula (I) is L-methionine sulfone or D-methionine sulfone (i.e., Ri is methyl; R2 is oxygen, R3 is hydrogen and n is 2). In a further embodiment, the compound having formula (I) is N-acetyl-L-methionine sulfoxide or N-acetyl-D-methionine sulfoxide (i.e., Ri is methyl; R2 is hydrogen, R3 is acetyl and n is 2). In another embodiment, the compound having formula (I) is N-formyl-L-methionine sulfoxide or N-formyl-D-methionine sulfoxide (i.e., Ri is methyl; R2 is hydrogen, R3 is formyl and n is 2). In still another embodiment, the compound corresponding to formula (I) is N-acetyl-L-methionine sulfone or N-acetyl-D-methionine sulfone (i.e., Ri is methyl; R2 is oxygen, R3 is acetyl and n is 2). In an additional embodiment, the compound corresponding to formula (I) is N-formyl-L- methionine sulfone or N-formyl-D-methionine sulfone (i.e., Ri is methyl; R2 is oxygen, R3 is formyl and n is 2). (b) Acyl Methionine Compounds [001 0] In an alternative embodiment, the methionine compound is an acyl methionine derivative having formula (II): wherein: * is a chiral carbon; R4 is methyl or ethyl; R5 is an acyl group; n is an integer from 1 to 3 . [001 1] The compound having formula (II) may be normethionine (i.e., n is 1), methionine (i.e., n is 2) or homomethionine (i.e., n is 3). Examples of suitable acyl groups (i.e., R5) include formyl, acetyl, propionyl and succinyl. Exemplary acyl groups are formyl and acetyl. The compound having formula (II) may also be an ester derivative. Examples of suitable ester derivatives include methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, and butyl esters. In still another embodiment, the compound having formula (II) is N-propionyl-L- methionine or N-propionyl-D-methionine (i.e., R4 is methyl; R5 is propionyl and n is 2). In a further embodiment, the compound having formula (II) is N-succinyl-L- methionine or N-succinyl-D-methionine (i.e., R4 is methyl; R5 is succinyl and n is 2). (c) Peptides having Methionine [001 3] In a further alternative embodiment, the methionine compound may include more than one methionine amino acid residue. In this context, the methionine compound may be a peptide that includes from about 1 to about 5 methionine amino acid residues. In an additional embodiment, the methionine compound may be a peptide that has from about 2 to about 4 methionine amino acid residues. In a further embodiment, the methionine compound may be a peptide having three methionine amino acid residues. In an exemplary embodiment, the methionine compound may be a dipeptide corresponding to formula (III): (III) wherein: * is a chiral carbon; R6 and Ri2 are independently methyl or ethyl; R7, Rs, Rio and Rn are independently oxygen or hydrogen; Rg is an acyl group or hydrogen; n is an integer from 1 to 3; and m is an integer from 1 to 3 .

Pers. (Fumariaceae) are reported from Westchester Co., New York, for the first time. The species was previously only known from a small area along the Bronx River in Bronx Co., New York. The Westchester County plants documented here represent the second known wild population in North America. This discovery increases the number of Corydalis species in North America from ten to eleven and from four to five in the northeastern USA. It is the only spontaneous, purple- or white- flowered species in the Northeast. Corydalis incisa (Thunb.) Pers growing outside of cultivation in North America were first discovered on the floodplain of the Bronx River, near the Burke Avenue Bridge in Bronx Park, New York, by Michael Sundue during the 2005 Bronx River BioBlitz (Sundue, pers. comm). No voucher specimens were collected. Soon after, Steve Glenn collected the species at the same locality and noted "dozens" of individuals along both banks of the River, reported for the first time as naturalized in North America by Lamont et al. (2011). The population has since persisted and expanded. In 2014, a second population was discovered by the authors and is detailed below.

PLUNKETT2 AND STEPHEN R. DOWNIE Department of Plant Biology, University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois 61801 Traditional sources of taxonomic characters in the large and taxonomically complex subfamily Apioideae (Apiaceae) have been confounding and no classi®cation system of the subfamily has been widely accepted. A restriction site analysis of the chloroplast genome from 78 representatives of Apioideae and related groups provided a data matrix of 990 variable characters (750 of which were potentially parsimony-informative). A comparison of these data to that of three recent DNA sequencing studies of Apioideae (based on ITS, rpoCl intron, and matK sequences) shows that the restriction site analysis provides 2.6± 3.6 times more variable characters for a comparable group of taxa. Moreover, levels of divergence appear to be well suited to studies at the subfamilial and tribal levels of Apiaceae. Cladistic and phenetic analyses of the restriction site data yielded trees that are visually congruent to those derived from the other recent molecular studies. On the basis of these comparisons, six lineages and one paraphyletic grade are provisionally recognized as informal groups. These groups can serve as the starting point for future, more intensive studies of the subfamily. Key words: Apiaceae; Apioideae; chloroplast genome; restriction site analysis; Umbelliferae. OLMSTEAD Department of Biology, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington 98195, USA Received 3 February 2012; revised 29 June 2012; accepted for publication 23 August 2012 Lantaneae are an example of a taxonomically problematic, widespread and recently radiated Neotropical lineage. Taxonomy in Lantaneae is difficult because of complex, overlapping patterns of shifts in morphological traits among members; monophyly of the traditional genera cannot be assumed without additional information from molecular data. We took a multi-locus approach to infer phylogenetic relationships in Lantaneae, resolving major clades among a broad representative sample that covers the morphological, taxonomic and geographical diversity of this group. Data from multiple, independent loci reveal individual gene trees that are incongruent with one another, with varying degrees of support. Without reliable, applicable methods to determine the sources of such incongru- ence and to resolve it, we present the consensus between well-supported topologies among our data sets as the best estimate of Lantaneae phylogeny to date. According to this consensus tree, fleshy fruits in Lantaneae have been derived from dry fruits at least five times; taxonomic schemes separating genera based on fruit characteristics are artificial. Lantaneae have shifted into the Neotropics from the southern temperate subtropics and have colonized Africa in at least two separate long-distance dispersal events. This study provides a first pass at a broad Lantaneae phylogeny, but two important areas remain unresolved: the position of Acantholippia relative to Aloysia; and species-level relationships in the Lantana–Lippia clade.

    v. August 9, 2010 Invasive Plants of Wisconsin Hedge-parsleys (Torilis sp.) Authors: Brendon Panke and Mark Renz1 Herbaceous biennials that establish as rosettes with parsley-like leaves. Plants flower in the 2nd year. Flowering stems are spreading, grooved, notably jointed, and covered in hair. Mature plants are typically 2-4’ tall. Legal Classification in WI: Japanese hedge-parsley Torilis japonica – Prohibited/Restricted Spreading hedge-parsley Torilis arvensis - Prohibited Leaves: Stem leaves are pinnately compound, alternate, fern-like, triangular, slightly hairy, and 2-5” long. Leaflets are pinnately divided and clasp the stem. Rosette leaves are similar to stem leaves. Flowers: Midsummer to late summer. White flowers found in small, loose, flat-topped umbels. Japanese hedge-parsley has two or more small bracts at the base of each umbel. Spreading hedge-parsley lacks bracts at the base of each umbel. Fruits & seeds: Each flower produces a pair of bristle-covered fruit that can attach to fur or clothing. Fruit are initially rosy or white-green, but become brown as they mature. Roots: Taproot. Similar species: Wild carrot (Daucus carota) is not as hairy and has larger, flatter, and denser umbels. Caraway (Carum carvi) is shorter, has dark, oblong seeds and leaves that are more finely divided than the hedge-parsleys. Sweet cicely (Osmorhiza) has leaves that are not as fern-like. Wild chervil (Anthriscus sylvestris) flowers in spring. The bristle-covered seed of the hedge-parsleys is a key characteristic to distinguish these two hedge-parsleys from other similar species. Ecological threat: Invades forest edges, fields, fencerows, roadsides, and disturbed areas.
