Chartered in 1956, the Cherokee Town Club recognized as one of America’s premier private clubs with a membership by invitation only. Cherokee held its first general business meeting on January 31, 1956, at the old Erlanger Theater, originally an opera house built in the 1920s on Peachtree Street near North Avenue. On October 13, 1956, members were able to hold their first official social function, a brunch, preceding a Georgia Tech football game, in the building known today as the “Town Club.” Their first formal dinner dance took place on December 8, 1956, in the original ballroom of the Grant Estate, now the Town Club’s expansive Main Lounge. The Cherokee Town Club has undergone several major expansions over the years, the last being in 2008/2009 which added another 25,000 square feet to the existing building. Cherokee, in 1997, was named the “very best private country club” in America in an inaugural poll of thousands of leaders in private club management. Cherokee was honored by the Club Leaders Forum by earning this mark of distinction in 2000, 2003, 2006, and again in March of 2009. The excellence of Cherokee’s facilities, combined with its commitment to the highest standards in dining and member services along with their long standing tradition of southern hospitality, has brought the club an extraordinary number of honors and awards throughout the years. Senri Oe A New York Resident for the past decade, Senri Oe is making a name for himself as an innovative, engaged and highly creative member of the jazz community. Though he has proved his skill as a songwriter, pianist, singer and more, he prefers to describe himself as a jazz musician who loves to write music as well as perform on piano. In the four jazz albums Senri has released as a leader since 2012, he’s shown himsef to be versatile and adventurous, exploring different facets of jazz with each CD. From a two-horn quintet (Boys Mature Slow, His 2012 Stateside Debut) to a full big band (2013’s Spooky Hotel) to a straight- ahead trio (Collective Scribble, 2015) to a vocal showcase (2016’s Answer July, featuring the likes of Sheila Jordan, Theo Bleckmann, Becca Stevens and Lauren Kinham of New York Voices), Senri makes it clear he’s comfortable in a variety of configurations. The albums have been well-received in both the U.S. and Senri’s native Japan, earning glowing reviews in jazz magazine and on blogs. As for what fresh recordings, listeners will have to wait till later this year to find out. THE NEW SCHOOL FOR JAZZ AND CONTEMPORARY MUSIC THE ALBUM OF THE YEAR:NEW STAR を受賞。 THE JAPAN-AMERICA SOCIETY OF GEORGIA SILENT AUCTION AND DOOR PRIZE DONORS ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER JAPAN-AMERICA SOCIETY OF AFLAC GEORGIA APTO GLOBAL COMMUNITY JC PLASTIC SURGERY ATLANTA BOTANICAL GARDEN KAJIMA BUILDING & DESIGN ATLANTA BRAVES GROUP ATLANTA DREAM KAZUMI & FORREST LEEDY ATLANTA EVERGREEN MARRIOTT LANDMARK THEATRES CONFERENCE RESORT MEDIEVAL TIMES ATLANTA FALCONS MERRILY BAIRD ATLANTA HAWKS MICHAEL C. • Tackling Challenging Issues in Shakespeare for Young Audiences
Shrews, Moneylenders, Soldiers, and Moors: Tackling Challenging Issues in Shakespeare for Young Audiences DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Elizabeth Harelik, M.A. Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: Professor Lesley Ferris, Adviser Professor Jennifer Schlueter Professor Shilarna Stokes Professor Robin Post Copyright by Elizabeth Harelik 2016 Abstract Shakespeare’s plays are often a staple of the secondary school curriculum, and, more and more, theatre artists and educators are introducing young people to his works through performance. While these performances offer an engaging way for students to access these complex texts, they also often bring up topics and themes that might be challenging to discuss with young people. To give just a few examples, The Taming of the Shrew contains blatant sexism and gender violence; The Merchant of Venice features a multitude of anti-Semitic slurs; Othello shows characters displaying overtly racist attitudes towards its title character; and Henry V has several scenes of wartime violence. These themes are important, timely, and crucial to discuss with young people, but how can directors, actors, and teachers use Shakespeare’s work as a springboard to begin these conversations? In this research project, I explore twenty-first century productions of the four plays mentioned above. All of the productions studied were done in the United States by professional or university companies, either for young audiences or with young people as performers. I look at the various ways that practitioners have adapted these plays, from abridgments that retain basic plot points but reduce running time, to versions incorporating significant audience participation, to reimaginings created by or with student performers.
