Hello fellow members The best overall results were: Scratch Well, the spring sailing season has started and the post-Chrissy 3rd “Cotton On” Scott & Max diet has begun, so what’s news? 5th “Tom Tom” Tom & Josh 6th “Eugene” Tim & Will NEW START BOAT 9th “Ace” Penny & Lucy Dave Hyde is still working on the short-list of boats that meet Yours truly went out for a sail with Kingsley on the mighty our criteria. The good news is that now is a great time to be in last weekend – yahoo! I’d forgotten the excitement of the market for a second hand boat! The Big Night Out funds fast and after our 2nd or 3rd capsize (who’s are tucked away and ready for the right vessel. counting?) I called for the walking frame! All you dinghy sailors – and yachties too - should ask for a ride sometime soon as the NEW BIG RED RIB season winds down, its great fun! You may have noticed a big red RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) with the letters AUS on the motor cover recently. Yes, our YACHT RACING continued growth in the centreboard division has meant The second annual Avalon Wet-Etchells Regatta was run in that a proper “coach” boat was needed and when the Murray late January with David Adams (an outsider!) taking home family mentioned that they had one of the ex-olympic coach/ the silverware on scratch and Pete Kidner cleaning up on response boats available for sale at a special price for their local handicap. 10 boats entered this year, with more next year we club – we said “Yes please!”. The funds came mostly from the hope. Thanks to Bruce Dey and Dave Hyde for organising a Australian Sports Foundation fund (tax deductible remember!) great series. with general reserve funds used for the rest Sadly, in December, we had an incident with one of our yachts where they got into trouble close to the rocks during the Quartet CENTREBOARD RACING Bowl race and although a couple of ASC boats saw them in MJ Nationals – Held at BYRA in January. ASC had 7 boats trouble, no-one called ASC or offered to help. Luckily no-one entered, best overall results were: was seriously hurt, but we pride ourselves on our reputation Main Fleet Scratch as a friendly club with exceptional camaraderie between 13th “Full Throttle” Mike & Harley fellow yacht racers and cruisers. This incident has lead to a few 14th “Bullet” Hannah & Jim mandatory changes to our yacht racing requirements, please Main Fleet Handicap see later in this issue. 1st “Bite Me” Jessica & Annika 5th “Bullet” Jim & Hannah AUSTRALIA DAY Novice Fleet Again ASC had a fantastic turn-out for this years Australia Day 6th “Fast & Furious” Sam & Shane Regatta. The Cherubs and 13 foot skiffs blessed us with their 14th “Akuna Matata” Ruby & Ella presence and boosted the centreboard numbers to 73, with 12 All Girl Fleet yachts racing too. 6th “Reflex” Seldon & Margot As always, many thanks to all for the news, suggestions and 7th “Trick or Treat” Clare & Juliet commendations. 8th “Bite Me” Jessica & Annika To all our sailors, sail well, sail fair, sail fast and make your Well done guys and girls!! club proud! Peter Gale Flying 11 Nationals – Held at Eden in January. This was really Commodore close racing with 2nd to 4th separated by only 2 points and 5th Avalon Sailing Club to 8th separated by only 3 points. “The sailing club closest to Paradise!” ASC had 18 boats entered, with 4 boats in the top ten.

2 Yacht Incident – December All ASC yachts must contact ASC, by radio(VHF 73) or mobile phone, if they notice any other yachts -ASC or not - in potential In early December, one of the ASC yachts got into trouble at trouble West Head whilst taking part in the Quartet Bowl Race Series. ASC will contact the proper authorities and, if available, send While the yacht in difficulty was seen by a number of ASC boats, an ASC boat on “standby” – NOT to perform boat recovery or and although there were powerboats nearby – perhaps even in rescue if dangerous. a better position to offer assistance – no ASC boats offered help ASC Race Committee may apply penalties to future yachts that nor radioed or phoned for assistance. After this incident, the do not offer assistance to, or advise ASC of yachts in distress. ASC Main Committee resolved the following: Any yacht can apply to the race committee for redress in Yacht Racing Rule Changes the event of rendering assistance to, or standing by a vessel in distress (This means that the time that is spent offering Effective from Jan 01 2009 or rendering assistance is taken off your elapsed race time All ASC yachts MUST carry VHF (permanent or handheld) in ALL …– THIS IS ALWAYS TREATED MORE THAN FAIRLY BY ALL RACE races, and should monitor channel 73 COMMITTEES, especially ASC !) The boys where out exploring damage! and Zac Duryea had come to grief with a stick impaling itself into Our more experienced sailors all put it up to the opposition and the lower half of his leg! showed Avalon is a force to be reckoned with. 5 Cruising - January Jaunts

The Cruising Division has been on two offshore cruises already in being on the water in such an idyllic spot. We moved round 2009. We made our customary pilgrimages to Broughton Island to to Coal Shaft Bay on New Year’s Eve for the traditional bonfire see in the New Year and to Sydney Harbour to celebrate Australia party on the beach. We had spent the day gathering firewood, Day. including a huge heavy piece of timber that Jim and I carted miles along the beach and towed out to Kate as it was too heavy to fit Only two boats set off to Towlers Bay on the evening of Boxing into the dinghy. I had to swim back as Jim couldn’t row both Day, Paul and Bev Sinclair on Hagar and ourselves on Kate Kelly. heavyweights out! The young crew on Midnight’s Promise built Everybody else had family commitments or else it was too , a magnificent fire and we enjoyed a great party on the beach, not windy enough, the wind was in the wrong direction etc. etc! watching the distant fireworks of Shoal Bay, sharing some bubbly We agreed that the wind was going to be in the wrong direction and bringing in the New Year amongst good friends. and far too strong initially so we spent 2 idyllic nights in Maitland Bay before setting off up the coast. The only downside to our few As there was a strong southerly forecast for New Year’s Day, we days of swimming, snorkelling and walking was that there were returned to Newcastle that morning and spent a couple more far too many boats in the bay and some of enormous size (see nights there, enjoying walking into town and visiting the new Hagar’s “friend”)! Maritime Museum on the waterfront. It has an excellent history of Newcastle and its numerous shipwrecks, including the Pasha We set off really early in the morning for our trip to Newcastle, Bulka and the Sygna – a great museum. We had a hilariously which of course meant that there was absolutely no wind, so we bad guide show us round Fort Scratchley which gave me a fit of ended up motoring most of the way. As we neared Newcastle the giggles, and we badly needed a cold one afterwards! The the wind got up strongly under the burgeoning storm clouds and Customs House duly obliged as we watched the enormous coal after romping along happily, we had to quickly drop sails in the carriers manoeuvring in the river. We had an uneventful sail entrance as a violent thunderstorm caught us. We approached back to Pittwater, which took us 13 hours in fickle winds. We the Marina to see purple bolts of lightening striking just behind it. were delighted to be escorted by two playful dolphins for about We tied up safely in the pouring rain and to our surprise the yacht an hour before they got bored with us. Paul caught a nice bonito right alongside Kate was our nearest neighbour on the moorings and motored the latter part of the trip to get back and cook it off ASC! We joined up that evening with Karen and Rob from on the Americas Bay mooring. As we kept sailing, we reached Charm and had drinks at the newly opened waterside bar at the Halletts at 10.30 p.m. and decided to drop the hook for the night Newcastle Yacht Club. It is a great facility and also has a simple rather than try to find a spot in the Bay, which was packed to the BBQ-your-own bistro. We then adjourned to the famous Albion gills. The best wind of the entire trip was of course a beautiful pub for a most enjoyable dinner. strong nor’easter that whizzed us home the next afternoon. We The next day we had to motor most of the way to Broughton, in would have appreciated it the day before rather than off ASC – just hot still conditions. We were overtaken along the way by the large typical! RPA fleet steaming full ahead for Port Stephens. We did pick up We really look forward to our annual Broughton visit and this was an afternoon breeze from PS entrance and sailed up to the island, our fifth time. We have been lucky with the conditions because it heading straight in to beautiful Providence Bay on the northern is potentially a hazardous ocean anchorage in the wrong ones and shore. We met up with friends from previous NY visits, Kintail you have to be very careful with your navigation moving round from Palmy and several Lake Mac boats. We were also delighted the island as there are numerous bommies and rocky prickles. to find that the family anchored alongside Kate was the Hortons Similarly, watch the chart very carefully entering and leaving from ASC! Small world eh?! Richard, Bella and their boys were Maitland, as the reef has caught out many an unwary sailor. We do having a wonderful time enjoying the fabulous weather and the not want to encourage anyone to follow in our footsteps without sandy beach with its clear turquoise waters. They were far more being aware of the dangers, but we would love to have more energetic than us, but we did our share of swimming and walking boats come along and join in the delights of offshore cruising, the as well as lounging around in the hammock and just enjoying wonderful destinations and the new friendships you make.

6 The Australia Day Long Weekend was spent down on Sydney After the fun was over, we sailed back up the Harbour. The wind Harbour. The forecast was for a strong southerly late on the was still southerly and much cooler, so we once again anchored at Saturday, so once again the only club boats that set off were Hagar Cobblers, the preferred option of Manly still rather exposed and and Kate Kelly, joined by Karen and Rob on Charm. We set off at “rock and rolly”. It rained steadily all night and into the morning, different times, due to various running repairs being needed etc so we delayed our return trip until lunchtime. The rain scared and all met up at Cobblers Beach behind Middle Head. It was a off all the nudists at least, except the one that the Police arrived very hot day, with frustratingly fickle winds again, but we sailed to tow away as he had broken down (quite which “part” we are most of the way in Kate, except for one windless patch when the not sure!). We were amused to see that he put his shorts on when stern was slapping the water as we went backwards and even Jim the cops arrived! We had watched the Police boat lurking behind agreed to start the engine! I leapt over the side when we arrived Hagar for some time and wondered what Paul and Bev had done in a desperate bid to cool down, but may not have done so if I had to deserve their attention! We were also interested to note that read the article in today’s paper first : apparently 5 metre tiger the Naval Police no longer chase away boats that anchor inside sharks have been spotted in large numbers at Cobblers Beach! The the line of naval buoys, good to know for future trips, as you can only unpleasant beasties we saw there were the usual collection of anchor further away from the nudie beach in there. We had light bare butts, mainly attached to overweight middle-aged men and winds, again, for the trip back and had to motor some of the not at all pleasing to the eye. Cobblers is a very pretty little beach way. Once again the best of the wind was in Pittwater, but we did and beautifully sheltered from southerlies, but you need blinkers. manage to sail the latter part of the passage up the coast. We saw Karen and Rob were amazed at the antics of a naked young “lady” a few dolphins, flying fish and a basking seal on the way down, on the boat nearest them. I missed it all thank goodness. We but caught no fish this trip. were very snug when the very strong southerly came through and One amazing yacht we met up with at Cobblers was Possibilities, many other boats quickly came across from Store and Quarantine, a 25’ Top Hat that had just returned from a five- year which was very exposed.
