Also, this year the Festival will honor Camaron de la Isla with seve- ral activities. There will be master classes, workshops, conferences, round tables and documentaries. ‘CAMARÓN EN RITO: 25 ANIVERSARIO’ José María Velázquez Gaztelu | 23 AUG | 17:00 | Baluarte | AUDIOVISUAL CONFERENCE The author and poet from Cadiz José María Velázquez Gaztelu, writes, directs and presents the renowned radio program ‘Nuestro Flamenco’ at Spanish National radio broadcasting Rádio Clásica de RNE since 1984. He was co-scriptwriter, interviewer and flamenco con- noisseur for the famous TV series at Spanish National TV ‘Rito y Geografía del Cante’ and ’Rito y Geografía del Baile’. This time, he presents a conference aimed at remembering the 25th anniversary of the death of Camarón de la Isla, one of the most important flamenco artist of all times. ‘CAMARÓN’ Speakers: Guadiana, Ricardo Pachón, Pepe Habichuela, José María Velázquez Gaztelu Moderator: Joaquín Albaicín | 24 AUG | 17:00 | Baluarte | ROUNDTABLE The goal of this roundtable dedicated to Camarón de la Isla is to remember him, his role in the history of flamenco singing and music, and him as a person. Joaquín Albaicín will moderate and will oer the opportunity to these top-of-the-range speakers to share funny stories and anecdotes about the genius, as all of them somehow knew him. Pepe Habichuela, Guadiana, Ricardo Pachón and José María Velázquez Gaztelu, will chat about Camaron’s influence in the flamenco artistic arena, the significance of his work and his own sources of inspiration. All this without forgetting the chance for improvisation that such a roundtable with such lively speakers might bring. ‘EL LEGADO DE SABICAS’ Pablo Calatayud | 25 AUG | 17:00 | Baluarte | AUDIOVISUAL CONFERENCE Agustín Castellón Campos ‘Sabicas’ is, with no doubt, one of the most important musicians in the history of flamenco and thus, in the history of music. He is key to understand the meaning of the flamenco guitar concert concept. This journey throughout his records, his contributions to the indus- try and to the flamenco business and his influence on subsequent maestros like Paco de Lucía; takes us to discover what is left and remains from his essence and helps us discover its current situation through his influence. The presentation will include audiovisual contributions from Sabicas himself, and lead figures of guitar and flamenco connoisseurs. ‘CAMARÓN NUESTRO’ Ricardo Pachón | 25 AUG | 18:30 | Civivox Condestable | AUDIOVISUAL CONFERENCE This is a conference about the producer of ‘La Leyenda del Tiempo’ which takes us to a journey through the life and work of the most important cantaor of our times. It shows us funny stories, curiosities and souvenirs of the moments they lived, all explained in the first person. The energy of the conference expands thanks to the audiovisual aid of videos, photos and audios, some of them unpublished. The conference starts with Camarón’s childhood, and explains how they got to know each other and how this was the beginning of a personal relationship which would evolve and become also a profesional relationship later on. The general common thread of the conference is the list of records of José Monge Cruz and, particularly, Ricardo tells us about his own productions, from ‘La Leyenda del Tiempo’ onwards. ‘RIQUENI’ Paco Bech | 26 AUG | 18:30 | Civivox Condestable | DOCUMENTAL Fifteen years have gone by since Rafael Riqueni’s last published work. He is one of the best guitar players in the history of flamenco and, in general, in Spanish music. This is way too long a period of time that comes to and end thanks to ‘Parque de María Luisa’, his new record, full of life and eagerness. With it, Rafael Riqueni recovers and resumes a career full of success and joy but also full of diculties and bumps in the road. We could consider it a happy ending that gives the right value to this great guitarist’s work. Overcoming diculties turns out to be a big challenge and leaving behind a past full of obstacles makes him shine again with unquestionable brilliance. Thus, Rafael Riqueni represents a source of inspiration and a living legend of personal drive and example for other well determined artists. This documentary is directed by Paco Bech. ‘EL FLAMENCO EN EL PAÍS VASCO Y NAVARRA’ Curro Velázquez Gaztelu | 27 AUG | 17:00 | Baluarte | CONFERENCE Flamenco has been present in the geographic area we currently recognize as Basque Country and Navarra, and also known as Euskal Herria. Despite there were recent times when flamen- co was not very well regarded in this region, it has little by little recovered popularity and this is one of the places in Spain where this art is most valued and enjoyed. In this conference we present a historic journey that takes us from the singing cafes of Bilbao to the current festivals that spread around the Basque Country and Navarra. From flamenco myths with ‘eusko label’ such as Antonio el de Bilbao or Pilar López, to current artists like Yago Santos or Jesús Torres, just to name a few. We review all aspects of flamenco in this corner of the Iberian Peninsula, and look forward to what it is to come with flawless and forceful energy. The show places women in its core and takes over from the experimental base that represented ‘Cere- monia’ (2014) by the artist Mikel Belascoain, but this time using folklore as roots. ‘Maga’ is an original artistic proposal which will change in each location and that materializes in a folk-based performance. The artist, Mikel Belascoain, builds up from a flamenco scenography that blends with the performance proposal of the flamenco dancer and winner of the Desplante award of the Festi- val de las Minas (2015), Alba Heredia. This show is a work in progress. This means that it does not have a planned end as it evolves according to each venue. It is worth noting that the first release in Pamplona is part of its crea- tive development. JOSE GRECO , SEE PAGE 5 BIOGRAPHY OF A. LUTHIER Ramirez The Great |AMIREZ DE GALARRETA, MANUEL...a great Spanish luthier, a native of Madrid, Spain. Recognized by everyone as the magician of his trade. He was a great artist at his vocation and a credit to his heritage. Many authorities consider him equal or su- perior to Torres. In the year 1890, he studied electricity until he became foreman of the Madrid Electric Com- pany. During this time he made many fine guitars to supplement his education. Because of the tre- mendous popularity of Torres, Ramirez would make copies of Torres guitars and sell them as originals, no one knew the difference. He tried to keep this a secret until he died. A few years later he opened his own work- shop where he made great guitars for over a period of twenty years. The great luthier Santos Hernandez worked for Ramirez during this complete twenty year period. One can only dream of the magnificent instruments made during this time. 3 BIOGRAPHY OF A LUTHIER (cont'd) Every guitarist today can be grateful to lu- thiers like Ramirez whose great guitars have added so much elegance to the guitar as the concert instrument is today. • Málaga 1967: Nos Traemos a Sabicas
