The Many Deaths of Captain Cook A Study in Metropolitan Mass Culture, 1780-1810 Ruth Scobie PhD University of York Department of English April 2013 i Ruth Scobie The Many Deaths of Captain Cook Abstract This thesis traces metropolitan representations, between 1780 and 1810, of the violent death of Captain James Cook at Kealakekua Bay in Hawaii. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to these representations, in order to show how the interlinked texts of a nascent commercial culture initiated the creation of a colonial character, identified by Epeli Hau’ofa as the looming “ghost of Captain Cook.” The introduction sets out the circumstances of Cook’s death and existing metropolitan reputation in 1779. It situates the figure of Cook within contemporary mechanisms of ‘celebrity,’ related to notions of mass metropolitan culture. It argues that previous accounts of Cook’s fame have tended to overemphasise the immediacy and unanimity with which the dead Cook was adopted as an imperialist hero; with the result that the role of the scene within colonialist histories can appear inevitable, even natural. In response, I show that a contested mythology around Cook’s death was gradually constructed over the three decades after the incident took place, and was the contingent product of a range of texts, places, events, and individuals. The first section examines responses to the news of Cook’s death in January 1780, focusing on the way that the story was mediated by, first, its status as ‘news,’ created by newspapers; and second, the effects on Londoners of the Gordon riots in June of the same year. -

MARMOREALITIES: CLASSICAL NAKEDNESS IN BRITISH SCULPTURE AND HISTORICAL PAINTING 1798-1840 CORA HATSHEPSUT GILROY-WARE PH.D UNIVERSITY OF YORK HISTORY OF ART SEPTEMBER 2013 ABSTRACT Exploring the fortunes of naked Graeco-Roman corporealities in British art achieved between 1798 and 1840, this study looks at the ideal body’s evolution from a site of ideological significance to a form designed consciously to evade political meaning. While the ways in which the incorporation of antiquity into the French Revolutionary project forged a new kind of investment in the classical world have been well-documented, the drastic effects of the Revolution in terms of this particular cultural formation have remained largely unexamined in the context of British sculpture and historical painting. By 1820, a reaction against ideal forms and their ubiquitous presence during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wartime becomes commonplace in British cultural criticism. Taking shape in a series of chronological case-studies each centring on some of the nation’s most conspicuous artists during the period, this thesis navigates the causes and effects of this backlash, beginning with a state-funded marble monument to a fallen naval captain produced in 1798-1803 by the actively radical sculptor Thomas Banks. The next four chapters focus on distinct manifestations of classical nakedness by Benjamin West, Benjamin Robert Haydon, Thomas Stothard together with Richard Westall, and Henry Howard together with John Gibson and Richard James Wyatt, mapping what I identify as -

Thirty-six different artists, mostly British, are represented, among them key sporting and animal artists such as John Frederick Herring, Sr. (1795–1865) and Harry Hall (1814–1882), and Royal Academicians James Ward (1769–1859) and Sir Alfred Munnings (1878–1959), the latter who served as President of the Royal Academy. Works in the exhibit feature images of racing, pets, hunting, and prized livestock including cattle and, especially, horses. -

HE publication in four successive numbers of The Whitehall Review of the names of those Protestants who have become Catholics since the Tractarian move ment, led to the almost general suggestion that Rome's Recruits should be permanently embodied in a pamphlet. This has now been done. The lists which appeared in The Whitehall Review have been carefully revised, corrected, and considerably augmented ; and the result is the compilation of what must be regarded as the first List of Converts to Catholicism of a reliable nature. While the idea of issuing such a statement of" Perversions " or " Conversions " was received with unanimous favour — for the silly letter addressed to the Morning Post by Sir Edward Sullivan can only be regarded as the wild effusion of an ultra-Protestant gone very wrong — great curiosity has been manifested as to the sources from whence we derived our information. Chapter eleven he greater opportunities for patronage and artistic fame that London could offer lured many Irish artists to seek their fortune. Among landscape painters, George Barret was a founding Tmember of the Royal Academy; Robert Carver pursued a successful career painting scenery for the London theatres and was elected President of the Society of Artists while, even closer to home, Roberts’s master George Mullins relocated to London in 1770, a year after his pupil had set up on his own in Dublin – there may even have been some connection between the two events. The attrac- tions of London for a young Irish artist were manifold. The city offered potential access to ever more elevated circles of patronage and the chance to study the great collections of old masters. Even more fundamental was the febrile artistic atmosphere that the creation of the Royal Academy had engen- dered; it was an exciting time to be a young ambitious artist in London. By contrast, on his arrival in Dublin in 1781, the architect James Gandon was dismissive of the local job prospects: ‘The polite arts, or their professors, can obtain little notice and less encouragement amidst such conflicting selfish- ness’, a situation which had led ‘many of the highly gifted natives...[to] seek for personal encourage- ment and celebrity in England’.1 Balancing this, however, Roberts may have judged the market for landscape painting in London to be adequately supplied. In 1769, Thomas Jones, himself at an early stage at his career, surveyed the scene: ‘There was Lambert, & Wilson, & Zuccarelli, & Gainsborough, & Barret, & Richards, & Marlow in full possession of landscape business’.2 Jones concluded that ‘to push through such a phalanx required great talents, great exertions, and above all great interest’.3 As well as the number of established practitioners in the field there was also the question of demand. -

Reviewed by Stephen Roberts (History of Parliament Trust, London) Published on H-Albion (April, 2005) This is a large-scale treatment of a large-scale subject. The book is a narrative history of the disorders of the British archipelago, with an emphasis on the military conflicts. These are conventionally viewed as separate wars, and Trevor Royle divides his material in accordance with the convention. There are no fewer than forty-nine chapters in the book, with an epilogue, so inevitably the chapters are grouped into parts. Part 1 covers the build-up or as the author sees it, the "descent" to war, from 1638 to 1642, with proper emphasis on Charles I's disastrous policies in Scotland and Ireland. Part 2 takes us from the outbreak of the civil war in England to the king's engagement with the Scots, while the third part continues the story down to the conclusion of the third civil war, at Worcester in September 1651. Parts 4 and 5 deal with the transition from commonwealth to protectorate, and the restoration of the monarchy, respectively. In this choice of periodization, the book's main title, and its sub-title, lie a pointer to the varying focus of this work as a whole. -

This work is intended to set forth the entire Baronetage, giving a short account of all holders of the dignity, as also of their wives, with (as far as can be ascertained) the name and description of the parents of both parties. It is arranged on the same principle as The Complete Peerage (eight vols., 8vo., 1884-98), by the same Editor, save that the more convenient form of an alphabetical arrangement has, in this case, had to be abandoned for a chronological one; the former being practically impossible in treating of a dignity in which every holder may (and very many actually do) bear a different name from the grantee.
