At the ceremony, two new rescue motorcycles were launched, along with defibrillators, first-aid equipment, locating equipment and communications devices. The on- calls will serve as senior EMTs and paramedics, responding to emergency events in the Negev area and provide an initial medical response with the purpose of saving lives. An impressive ceremony was held to inaugurate first aid lockers with resuscitation equipment in shuls and public places in Ashdod and its environs. The ceremony was held in the Melitz Shul, a central shul that serves hundreds of residents of Rova Ches in Ashdod. It was attended by the directors of Magen David Adom district and national managers, including the executive director of MDA Eli Bin, and the director of operations Gil Moskowitz. Likewise, the executive director of Hatzolah Darom Menachem Schwartz attended, along with the rav of the organization Rabbi Moshe Bunim Mintz, Ashdod Mayor Dr. Yechiel Lassry, Chairman of the Religious Council of Ashdod Rabbi Ovadia Dahan, Ashdod Chief Rabbi Rav Sheinin, public figures and community leaders in Ashdod. The executive director of MDA, the mayor and the Chief Rabbi of Ashdod were honored with the ribbon cutting. Greetings, I am delighted to hereby present the Israel Public Utility Authority’s (Electricity) biennial activity report for the years 2012-2011. This report summarizes the Authority’s Assembly’s extensive and meticulous work, assisted by the Authority’s team of professional employees, over the past two years, signifying a turning point in the Israeli electricity and energy markets. Alongside a severe energy crisis that befell the electricity market in the past two years due to the discontinuation of natural gas supply from Egypt and the creation of a gas supply monopoly, these years have seen a historic change in the electricity market, commencing with the admission of private electricity entrepreneurship and clean electricity production in significant capacities (the Authority’s projection for private electricity production is 25% by 2016, and approximately 10% for electricity production using renewable energy by 2020). As a result of the natural gas crisis, which began in 2011 due to recurring explosions in the gas lines leading from Egypt to Israel, the Electricity Authority was faced with a reality that would have forced it to instantly and radically increase in the electricity tariffs for the Israeli consumers in 2012. These circumstances led the Authority to combine forces with government bodies, including the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources and the Ministry of Environmental Protection, and lead a comprehensive move which significantly restrained the tariff increase, and furthermore, relieved the electricity consumers’ burden in a manner that enabled spreading the tariff increase over three years.

Hagit, a community worker for the Bnei Brak municipality, told me about a group of Haredi women in Pardes Katz who held monthly activities. She gave me the telephone number of the club’s coordinator and said: “You’ve got to talk to Esti, she’s something special, I’m crazy about her. When I can, I go to their activities, I get carried away by her energy. Talk to her—it’s worth your while.” Esti invited me to the club’s next event, and so opened for me a window onto a plane of activity that I had not previously encountered. Some of the women I met at Esti’s programs were ones I had encountered previously at the community center or at Rabbi Zer’s lectures—but this time the context was new and different. Here the women sought to spend time with others like themselves, to address the life experience of the Mizrahi Haredi woman and her family, and to weave a network of connections that would support that life. For outside onlookers, the need for such a club might seem strange. After all, on the face of it, it looks as if Pardes Katz is full of religious and Haredi families.

Issue 17 contains lots of current reports - for the simple reason that there is so much happening in Israel and, to a lesser extent, Syria and Jordan. However, I have managed to present another 'balanced' Issue, with items on the First World War, the Mandate period, the Second World War and Israel Railways. At the time of preparing this issue, there were eight bookings for the TEFS Israel Trip in November - another 30 are needed by September for this is to go ahead. Book soon! Details of what can be done for 'local' readers will depend on the numbers on the main tour. Another idea is the production of a video film of railways in Israel. Two expert firms - Manor House Media and Michael Hopstein Enterprises - are Interested in the project, but funding is needed and, so far, Israel Railways themselves don’t seem to be Interested in paying! The simplest way is to get an initial Subscription List to guarantee initial production costs; if every 'Harakevet' subscriber was willing to put £30 forward (we need about £4,500 to £5,000 to go ahead) they would receive a 'free' copy of the finished product, in whatever format desired!
