Bieito’s continued association with the company shows ENO’s commitment to highly theatrical and new interpretations of core repertoire. Following the success of his Carmen at ENO in 2012, described by The Guardian as ‘a cogent, gripping piece of work’, Bieito’s production of Fidelio comes to the London Coliseum after its 2010 premiere in Munich. Working with designer Rebecca Ringst, Bieito presents a vast Escher-like labyrinth set, symbolising the powerfully claustrophobic nature of the opera. Edward Gardner, ENO’s highly acclaimed Music Director, 2013 Olivier Award-nominee and recipient of an OBE for services to music, conducts an outstanding cast led by Stuart Skelton singing Florestan and Emma Bell as Leonore. Since his definitive performance of Peter Grimes at ENO, Skelton is now recognised as one of the finest heldentenors of his generation, appearing at the world’s major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and Opéra National de Paris. -

Britten epicentre — Issue 68, 1 November 2013 COMING SOON — LIVE PERFORMANCE IN NOVEMBER Concerts for the Benjamin Britten centenary come thick and fast this month, with the one- hundredth anniversary of Britten's birth on 22 November. The epicentre appears to be in Cambridge, UK (quite near to Britten's Aldeburgh): Mark Padmore, Stephen Bell and the Britten Sinfonia contribute Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal and the Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings on the birthday itself; the Escher String Quartet plays Quartet No 3; Florilegium and King's College Choir with Stephen Cleobury present Canticle II: Abraham and Isaac and Hymn to St Cecilia; James Gilchrist and Anna Tilbrook perform the Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo, On This Island and folksong arrangements. Amongst the other UK-based groups celebrating are Bene't Coldstream, Keith Maries and the Chiltern Camerata (Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings in Buckinghamshire UK); Canticum and Mark Forkgen (all-Britten choral programme in London); Adrian Partington's War Requiem in Bristol, featuring joint forces from Gloucester and Bristol, and Les Illuminations (Swinsian Ensemble and Justin Fung, in London). In New York City, Melodia Women's Choir contributes A Ceremony of Carols. There are more events at Britten 100, all co-ordinated by the Britten-Pears Foundation. Other notable live performance this month includes the National Theatre for Children, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Grant Cooper and Sara Brodie performing Gareth Farr's Sky Dancer in Auckland and Christchurch. In New York, St Luke's Chamber Ensemble presents the first New York performance of Crossroads by John Harbison; Experiments in Opera have programmed three contemporary operas in celebration of Hallowmas; Salon/Sanctuary Concerts presents Dowland's Europe: The Winds of Change with lutenist Hopkinson Smith and Music for Brunelleschi's Dome with organist Lucia Baldacci; there's Czech music from Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble conducted by James John. -

FOR RELEASE: October 2, 2013 Press Contacts: Jonathan Dean, 206.676.5543, [email protected] Visuals Contact: Monte Jacobson, 206.676.5545, [email protected] Successful 2012/13 Season Achieves Balanced Budget, Eliminates Deficit Nuccia Focile and Asher Fisch Named Seattle Opera Artists of the Year Seattle—On Tuesday, September 24, at Seattle Opera’s Annual Meeting at McCaw Hall, the company announced that it achieved a balanced budget for the 2012/13 season and eliminated the deficit from the 2011/12 season. The 12/13 season included productions of Turandot, Fidelio, La Cenerentola, La bohème, and a double-bill of La voix humaine and Suor Angelica. An audit, concluded in September, totaled the actual expense budget for the 12/13 season at just over $20.2 million. Revenues were sufficient to balance these expenses and retire the $758,000 accumulated deficit. “When it became clear that Seattle Opera would post a deficit in 2012,” says Board President William T. Weyerhaeuser, “the Board of Trustees announced several changes to company operations in the interests of ensuring that Seattle Opera would be in good standing when its third General Director was announced. Thanks to generous contributions from our community, including a challenge grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and diligent planning and plenty of hard work and sacrifices by staff and artists, Speight Jenkins will indeed deliver a strong company to Aidan Lang. The deficit is retired, the budget is balanced, and the art is extraordinary. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I’d like to thank everyone who has made this season such a success for Seattle Opera.” In recent seasons Seattle Opera has emphasized innovation, efficiency, and partnership while more than doubling the scale of its education and community engagement programs and the number of people these programs serve. -

ANNUAL REPORT 2012–13 3 Introduction 5 Metropolitan Opera Board of Directors 7 2012–13 Season Repertory & Events 14 2012–13 Artist Roster 15 The Financial Results 46 Patrons Introduction The Metropolitan Opera’s 2012–13 season featured an extraordinary number of artistic highlights, earning high praise for new productions, while the company nevertheless faced new financial challenges. The Met presented seven new stagings during the 2012–13 season, including the Met premieres of Thomas Adès’s The Tempest and Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda, the second of the composer’s trilogy of Tudor operas (with the third installment planned for a future season). All seven new productions, plus five revivals, were presented in movie theaters around the world as part of the Met’s groundbreaking Live in HD series, which continued to be an important revenue source for the Met, earning $28 million. Combined earned revenue for the Met (Live in HD and box office) totaled $117.3 million. This figure was lower than anticipated as the company continued to face a flat box office, complicated by the effects of Hurricane Sandy, the aftermath of which had a negative impact of approximately $2 million. As always, the season featured the talents of the world’s leading singers, conductors, directors, designers, choreographers, and video artists. Two directors made stunning company debuts: François Girard, with his mesmerizing production of Parsifal on the occasion of Wagner’s bicentennial, and Michael Mayer, whose bold reimagining of Verdi’s Rigoletto in 1960 Las Vegas was the talk of the opera world and beyond. Robert Lepage returned to direct the highly anticipated company premiere of Thomas Adès’s The Tempest, with the composer on the podium. -

Saverio Clemente Andrea De Amici Luca Targetti Russian baritone Vasily Ladyuk was born in 1978 in the family of a professional musician. Already as a child he chose music as his lifetime vocation finishing cum laude the famous Sveshnikov Choral School for gifted boys in Moscow. He then graduated from the Moscow Academy of Choral Arts as conductor and solo singer, and polished up his vocal techniques and operatic skills attending master-classes by renowned specialists from La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera and the Houston Grand Opera. The singer started his career at the Novaya Opera Theatre in Moscow in 2004 his present day repertoire including over 20 operatic roles from bel canto to verismo. In 2007 he joined the Bolshoi Theatre company as a permanent guest soloist. V.Ladyuk is the winner of three world’s major vocal contest: the Francisco Viñas Competition, Placido Domingo’s “Operalia” and the Shizuoka Interantional Opera Competition, all in 2005. José Cura the Singer in Opera (1978 - 2018) 40 years of stage life The Argentinian José Cura represents the great hope of modern opera. Herald Sun, 21 February 1996 For music lovers, it is a rare treat to come across a singer whose distinctive voice is instantly and indelibly lodged in one's memory, an actor whose presence on stage breathes fresh life into tired characters, a man whose vision and in- tegrity set him apart from the rest. Such an artist is José Cura. 1978 2018 Born in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina, on 5 December 1962, José Cura's musical talent matured quickly: at 12 he was playing guitar under Juan di Lorenzo's guidance; at 15 he debuted as a choral director; and at 16 he began studies in composition with Carlos Castro and piano with Zulma Cabrera. In 1982, he ente- !1 red the Escuela Superior de Arte de la Universidad Nacional de Rosario to continue his musical education; the following year he became assistant conductor for the university choir. At 21, he won a grant to study at Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón. Cura continued to sing in the school chorus while focu- sing on composition and conducting until 1988, when he began working with Horacio Amauri to develop his singing technique. 1991 – 1993 Determined to make a career in opera, José Cura moved to Italy in 1991. In Milan, he met tenor Vittorio Terranova, under who’s authority Cura polished his Italian singing style. In February 1992 he made his debut in Verona as the Father in Henze's Po- llicino and as Principe Mediano in Paolo Arca’s La gatta bianca, two children’s operas. -
