Celebrating the Hebrew Home’s 40th Year in Rockville 1969 was more than just a time of flower power.

CHARLES E. SMITH Charles E. Smith Life Communities takes its name from a visionary leader in the Washington Jewish community. Charles E. Smith (1901-1995) was a persuasive philanthropist who generously supported the most vulnerable in our society. As president of the Hebrew Home from 1959–1962, he laid the groundwork for the Home’s 1969 move to its current Rockville campus.

Recognizing the need for continued philanthropic support and the emerging continuum of care on our campus, his son and son-in-law, Robert H. Smith and Robert P. Kogod, and their families made an extraordinary $12 million investment in our future. Our name, adopted in May 2006, unites our entities, sustains both the legacy and leadership of Charles E. Smith and honors the memory of a remarkable leader.

Through the generosity of George and Janice Wasserman, the Hebrew Home’s new residence acquired its name. This gap creates the significant shortfall shown on our financial summary. It also should be noted that Medicare payments support short-stay residents in our rehabilitation program, where care is more costly due to the intensive therapy, medication and nursing they receive.

Hymen Goldman Award The Hymen Goldman Award is presented annually to an individual who has con- tributed in significant ways to the Hebrew Home over many years in a volunteer capacity and who embodies the dedication and spirit of the late Hymen Goldman in whose memory the award is named. Mr. Goldman's singular dedication to the Home's mission caused him to be known as “Mr. Hebrew Home.”

6|The Charles E. Smith Life Communities Aunt Minnie Goldsmith Award Mrs. Charles Goldsmith, who was born in 1871, opened her heart to all those in distress. Lovingly known as “Aunt Minnie,” she took it upon herself to lead fundraising efforts on behalf of the Hebrew Home and its elderly residents. Each spring, she celebrated her birthday by inviting friends to a luncheon to raise funds for the Home. The Aunt Minnie Luncheon, which draws hundreds of women, continues that tradition, and the award in her name is presented annually “for idealistic service to humanity and com- munity welfare.”

Builders of the Future have created planned gifts, such as Bequests, Charitable Gift Annuities or Remainder Trusts, or have named the Hebrew Home as a beneficiary of a trust, IRA or insurance policy. Like the story of the grandfather planting an olive tree, knowing that he will not harvest from it but that his grandchildren will, Builders have translated their support of the Home into gifts that will live beyond them. Smith Life Communities Legacy Gifts – Permanent and Designated Funds Generous and farsighted donors have created Permanent and Designated Funds for many reasons: in memory of someone dear, in honor of a person or event, or to have the comfort of knowing that their contributions will permanently provide Charles E. Smith Life Communities with needed financial resources into the future. The designation “Permanent Funds” reflects the fact that the original gift creates an endowment from which earnings will be distributed. “Designated Funds” are created to meet critical needs and are totally expended for specific pur- poses chosen by the donor.
