An opening reception will be held on Saturday, January 12th from 6-8pm. The artist will also be present in the gallery to talk with visitors on Sat., Jan. 19, 4-6pm, and the show will run through Feb. 17th. The exhibition features a selection of six 26”x40” digitally printed, manipulated distortions of full-frame analog 35mm photographs from her ongoing series Surreal Photos hung as a contiguous installation, and several 16”x20” Surreal to Conceptual Photo-Morphs: Wafting Sheafs. In each rectangularly framed work, trapezoidal straight or curving slices of dreamlike reality appear to thrust or twist or descend through space. Photographed in international locations, often at night, the subject matter — a horse, a tower, a staircase, a doorway, a church, a roof, a window, a bird — resonates with the viewer’s own psychological undercurrent. The negative space in each plays as dominant a role as the shapes and iconography. Hung contiguously, with the images at different levels within the frames, they form individual multi-block pieces. Her training was in choreography, mime and physical theatre at Rhodes University, South Africa. After her studies, Hind performed with the celebrated First Physical Theatre Company. In the UK, she has worked as movement director and performer in theatres including the Almeida, Barbican, Bath Theatre Royal, Leeds Playhouse Lowry, Sheffield Crucible, The Old Vic and The Royal Exchange. Lucy is also an associate artist of the award-winning Slung Low theatre company, which specializes in making epic theatre in non-theatre spaces. Here, Lucy talks to George Rodosthenous about her movement direction on the award-winning musical Girl from the North Country (The Old Vic/West End/Toronto and recently seen on Broadway), which was described by New York Times critic Ben Brantley as “superb”. Smith Life Communities takes its name from a visionary leader in the Washington Jewish community. Charles E. Smith (1901-1995) was a persuasive philanthropist who generously supported the most vulnerable in our society. As president of the Hebrew Home from 1959–1962, he laid the groundwork for the Home’s 1969 move to its current Rockville campus. Recognizing the need for continued philanthropic support and the emerging continuum of care on our campus, his son and son-in-law, Robert H. Smith and Robert P.
