E-mail: [email protected] Abstract— The kernel of this paper is on the influence of dams on growth and development of the Nigerian economy. Countries in “the third world”, less developed nations and advanced nations recognize the sin qua non role of dams in the overall development of their economies, most particularly in the rural and urban sectors. Thereby, efflorescing growth and development. A corollary to the former sentence gave impetus to Nigeria to embark upon the construction and maintenance of dams all over the nation. Nigeria spent a colossal sum of over 10 (ten) trillion dollars in the construction of dams. However, a microscopic view of Nigeria political landscape will reveal that the construction of dams is laced with a misgrill success and failures. This finds expression in the plethora of problems bedeviling the policy. These problems include the issue of corruption, inadequate funds etc. Consequently, the paper defines the concept of dams and development. The paper is explicated with the aid of holistic theory and system theory. The nexus or the interconnect between dams, growth and development is orchestrated. The socio-economic cum political pathologies benighting the construction and the maintenance of dams is discussed. Epitomizing, the paper opines that the government policy on the construction of dams and its maintenance in all ramifications, is a veritable pedestal for the development of Nigerian economy. Currently, epidemiological data of urinary schistosomiasis (US) in school-age children (SAC) and adults are often reported together making it difficult to ascertain the true status of the disease. Based on this premise, we set out to carry out this review. Method: To achieve this aim, we carried out a computer-aided search of PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, African Journals OnLine (AJOL) and the database of World Health Organization. However, the information obtained from these sources was supplemented with additional literatures from Mendeley,ARTICLE Research Gate, and Google. Results: The search yielded 183 literatures of which 93 full text research, review and online articles were deemed fit for inclusion. Our key findings showed that: (1) of all World Health Organization (WHO) Regions, Africa is the most endemic zone for US, with Kenya and Senegal recording the highest prevalence and mean intensity respectively; (2) SAC within the range of 5–16 years contribute most significantly to the transmission cycle of US globally; (3) gender is a factor to watch out for, with male often recording the highest prevalence and intensity of infection; (4) contact with open, potentially infested water sources contribute significantly to transmission; (5) parental factors (occupation and education status) predispose SAC to US; (6) economic vis a vis ecological factors play a key role in infection transmission; and (7) in the last decade, a treatment coverage of 45% was never achieved globally for SAC or non-SAC treatment category for urinary schistosomiasis.

In addition to the 5 families of fish species in Ajiwa dam, the catches in Jibiya Department of forestry and fisheries, dam composed of Characidae (3.0%), Cyprinidae (1.0%) and Mochokidae (7.5%), while those of Zobe Usmanu Danfodiyo University dam composed of Characidae (2.5%). In all, the water bodies, Cichlidae made up the highest percentage Sokoto, Nigeria.

Audu2 1Department of Chemistry, Federal College of Education, Katsina, Nigeria 2Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria Abstract: The study was conducted to assess seasonal variations in some parameters of water collected from seven different dams in Katsina State, Nigeria using standard procedures. The samples were collected from five locations situated in the east, west, north, south and midpoint in each of the seven dams in the rainy season, harmattan and dry seasons for two years. The temperature, pH and Dissolved Oxygen content of the samples were measured in-situ at the site of collection using a Brannan mercury thermometer, Wagtech international potatest portable pH meter and an auto cal Dissolved Oxygen meter respectively. Other parameters tested are Turbidity which was measured using a HACH 2100N Turbidimeter while Total Solid, Total Suspended Solid and Total Dissolved Solids were determined using gravimetric method. The average reading for the two years was used in the analysis. The maximum temperature values were obtained in the dry season and lowest in harmattan. The mean conductivity values for all the samples was found to be highest in the dry season and lowest in the rainy season. All the values were however within the 1200µScm-1 Maximum Acceptable Limit recommended by WHO. The Turbidity and Dissolved Oxygen values were found to be highest in the rainy season.
