6 The Triumph Trumpet AUGUST 2012 AUGUST 2012 The Triumph Trumpet 27 C LUB REGALIA Pres Pete’s Musings Our trip to Europe is now a distant memory and I can only say if you have not TCC11 been to Europe then do so. Our first stop was Dubi were one of the high lights was the Burj Khalifa the tallest building in the world with the viewing platform

on the 124 floor and it took just over one minute to get there. We spent four nights in London and four in Paris and then ten nights on a canal boat on the Midi TCC30 Canal which was man made and is over three hundred years old, a great way to

see the country side including some great wineries. After the Midi Canal we leased a Peugeot 508 wagon with a 1.6 litre turbo die- TCC15 sel , a little under powered but with four adults and luggage gave us 5.6 litres per 100 klm. We travelled just over 6,000 klm in four weeks travelling through France, Italy, Switzerland, Luxemburg, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic and Austria. The highways in Europe were good but no better than our freeways and major highways with most having a top speed of 130 klm and on the auto barns in Germany the speed limit was open, to be able to do 200 klm was an experience to remember. We found that most drivers in Europe were better trained and had more patience. When they travel on the highways they travel in right lane ( slow lane ) and only travel in the left lane ( fast lane ) when they are overtaking and no matter the speed they go back into the slow lane, we could learn a thing or two from them. Most of the time on the auto barns we were between 130-150 klm so to come home and only do 100 klm is quite slow. As I TCC60 said our freeways and major highways are as good as the ones in Europe and we TCC20 should be able to travel at 120-130 klm, but we need to educate our drivers first. 12 The Triumph Trumpet AUGUST 2012 AUGUST 2012 The Triumph Trumpet 21 The Stag’s Secret Spoiler, Page No.1 TCC VIC & ACT BEECHWORTH TRIP PROMOTION In the past the Triumph Stag has had a bad history of over heating and blown head gaskets. The main causes in the early days was that the casting sand was still left in the block. Time marches and so does tech- nology. It is now over 34 years since the last Stag rolled off the produc- tion line. I would say that most Stags have gone through one engine re- build and had a blown head gasket by now. 6 vane and 12 vane water pumps have been tried and most return to the 6 vane pumps. Coolants have also come a long way. In the past guys like Jim Ostergaard have experimented with Davies Craig Electric Water pump with much success. Jim has carried out many modifications so his Stag can be more user friendly in 2012. When Annette and I bought our Stag the engine had recently been overhauled by a very experienced Triumph mechanic. Apart from running out of petrol recently this car has been terrific and has proved itself on the return trip to Junee last year. Car returned over 30 mpg. Just after buying the car it was a 38C day and Annette said let’s go to Geelong. I really didn’t want to take a chance but thought we had to find out how the car would behave. We got down and back and the temperature gauge didn’t go over a third. To this day we don’t have an over heating problem with this car. A company in England called LD Parts came up with the idea of a Secret Spoiler. It is such a simple device and so effective. Club Member Leon Himmelfarb bought in three from the UK. Colin Jenkins got the third spoiler. It is designed to fit between the bumper bar and the lower valance and direct air into the lower vent. If you look at a Stag head on the bumper bar and number plate stop any air flowing into the lower vent. The theory is that most air will flow though the front grill. Other air hits the body and flows under the car. Fitting LD Parts Spoiler the air is now deflected into the lower air vent behind the bumper. I fitted ours in less than two minutes and we went for a drive from Wyndham Vale to Wonga Park. Usually the temp gauge doesn’t go above a third. This time the gauge was half that again. Annette was complaining about having cold feet but there was no engine temperature. LD Parts do suggest removing the spoiler for the winter period. For further information go to www.ldparts.co.uk and then type in secret spoiler in the search area. Graeme Oxley
