  • The Grounds of Sufis' Aversion of Sharia
’ The Grounds of Sufis Aversion of Sharia Hassan Yusofian1 Received: 2018/09/22 Accepted: 2020/12/05 Abstract Of alleged Islamic mystics, there are few who have been negligent of sha- ria and have sometimes established their aversion of sharia on reasons. In this descriptive-analytic research, I analyze such aversion, aiming to con- sider certain deviations among the Sufis and mystics from compliance with sharia. Their grounds for aversion of sharia include the following: (a) the truth is not in need of sharia, which is explicitly or implicitly indicated by some of these mystics; (b) the guardian of the saints is contrasted to the prophethood of prophets. Certain pseudo-mystics cite hadiths attributed to the Prophet to talk of the infallibility of the saints in the sense that eve- rything is permitted for them; (c) a sacred goal justifies the deployment of non-sharia means. Thus, they believe that certain mystics made love to handsome teenage boys not because of personal lusts, but because of see- ing the divine beauty in their faces, and (d) intoxication removes religious duties. This applies mostly to the so-called “the sane of the insane” whose reason is taken away from them by God and are thus set free from duties. Keywords Sharia, tariqa (path), truth, aversion of sharia, guardianship, pederasty, intoxication. 1. Blossoms of Persian poetry, although inspired by the pure nature, gradually took the attractive qualities of mysticism. In traditions, the Holy Quran is called the burgeoning of hearts and the greatest prophet (peace be upon him) is referred to as the burgeoning of souls. Spring in Persian literature is sometimes the symbol of improvement and deliverance and at other times is considered as the symbol of the afterlife. Actually, this is the highest symbol of spring in Persian literature. Desert land of Yazd bears fragrant flowers, in spite of its natural wrath, tickles the taste of souls of the pious people.

  • Muslim Saints of South Asia
MUSLIM SAINTS OF SOUTH ASIA This book studies the veneration practices and rituals of the Muslim saints. It outlines the principle trends of the main Sufi orders in India, the profiles and teachings of the famous and less well-known saints, and the development of pilgrimage to their tombs in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. A detailed discussion of the interaction of the Hindu mystic tradition and Sufism shows the polarity between the rigidity of the orthodox and the flexibility of the popular Islam in South Asia. Treating the cult of saints as a universal and all pervading phenomenon embracing the life of the region in all its aspects, the analysis includes politics, social and family life, interpersonal relations, gender problems and national psyche. The author uses a multidimen- sional approach to the subject: a historical, religious and literary analysis of sources is combined with an anthropological study of the rites and rituals of the veneration of the shrines and the description of the architecture of the tombs. Anna Suvorova is Head of Department of Asian Literatures at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow. A recognized scholar in the field of Indo-Islamic culture and liter- ature, she frequently lectures at universities all over the world. She is the author of several books in Russian and English including The Poetics of Urdu Dastaan; The Sources of the New Indian Drama; The Quest for Theatre: the twentieth century drama in India and Pakistan; Nostalgia for Lucknow and Masnawi: a study of Urdu romance. She has also translated several books on pre-modern Urdu prose into Russian.

These three metapragmatic labels, used by speakers themselves, describe success and failure in use of playful language and construe a person as pleasant to be with. They are hāzerjavāb (lit. ready.response), bāmaze (lit. with.taste), and bānamak (lit. with.salt). Each is surrounded and supported by a cluster of (related) word meanings, which are instrumental in their cultural conceptualisations. The analytical framework is set within the research area known as ethnopragmatics, which is an offspring of Natural Semantics Metalanguage (NSM). With the use of explications and scripts articulated in cross-translatable semantic primes, the metapragmatic labels and the related clusters are examined in meticulous detail. This study demonstrates how ethnopragmatics, its insights on epistemologies backed by corpus pragmatics, can contribute to the metapragmatic studies by enabling a robust analysis using a systematic metalanguage.

  • Ajnabi, Or the Xenological Uncanny in Iranian Modernism
Copyright ©2021 Johns Hopkins University Press. This article is scheduled to appear in NEW LITERARY HISTORY, Volume 52, Issue 1, January, 2021. Please cite from the published version. Abstract: Within Iran, the transformation in the Islamic legal understanding of the foreign (ajnabi) into a political concept was accelerated by the encounter with Europe during the 19th century. The classical Iranian understanding of otherness as a domain fully demarcated from the self was replaced by an internalized other, resulting in what we call here the xenological uncanny. This article examines Iranian modernism through the lens of trauma theory, whereby the other is indistinguishable from the self. The three works we discuss—Sadeq Hedayat’s Blind Owl (1937), Bahram Sadeqi’s Heavenly Kingdom (1961), and Hushang Golshiri’s Prince Ehtejab (1968)—each delineate a different register in the xenological uncanny. Our lineage reveals how modernist Persian prose recapitulates a trajectory of possession and dispossession by the foreign and in the process brings about the traumatic recognition of a foreign voice within the self. In focusing on the divided modernist self from a Persian point of view, we identify an unrecognized trajectory for the uncanny within global literary modernism. Keywords: modernism, modernity, trauma, selfhood, xenology, uncanny, prose, fiction, Iran, Persian, Islamic law, Freud, Sadeq Hedayat, Bahram Sadeqi, Hushang Golshiri Ajnabi, Or the Xenological Uncanny in Iranian Modernism European modernity is often understood to be constituted

  • Esoteric Keys of Mīrzā ʿabd Al-Qādir Bīdel
ESOTERIC KEYS OF MĪRZĀ ʿABD AL-QĀDIR BĪDEL by NASIM FEKRAT (Under the Direction of Kenneth Lee Honerkamp) ABSTRACT Bīdel is considered the most difficult poet in Persian poetry. This study explores the complexity of his language through three key words: incapacity, mirror, and bewilderment. I argue that these are umbrella terms, which cover a range of concepts, images, metaphors, and symbols, and through understanding them, we find the keys to unlock the mysteries of Bīdel’s thinking; not knowing them, the inner subtlety and significance of his works cannot be understood. The goal of this examination is to see how Bīdel’s own ontological exploration yields a description of human relationship with the Divine.
