It Is Christmas Eve at a Waffle House Just Off Interstate 24 in Murfreesboro, TN, Just 20 Miles Outside of Nashville
A SCATTERED, SMOTHERED & COVERED CHRISTMAS A Waffle House Christmas Musical written by Kaine Riggan (It is Christmas Eve at a Waffle House just off Interstate 24 in Murfreesboro, TN, just 20 miles outside of Nashville. As the lights come up, wee see one gentleman sitting in a booth drinking coffee and having a bowl of chili. A quirky little waitress names Rita enters, obviously in a good mood. She is somewhere between plain and attractive and somewhere between thirty-five and fifty-five, although it is somewhat difficult to judge where in either category she clocks in. She pours out the old coffee (regular) and starts a new pot. She picks up a second pot (decaf) and smells it and decides to keep it. Suddenly, she notices the audience for the first time.) RITA Well shoot fire! If I’d known all ya’ll were gonna be here tonight, I’d a spent more time on this hair. (She quickly adjusts her hairdo) What do you think Harold? Is that better or should I just wear my bad hair day bonnet? (referring to her Waffle House paper hat) (HAROLD mumbles a grouchy, unintelligible response) Oh, chip up, Harold. It’s Christmas Eve! Don’t you just love Christmas Eve? (HAROLD starts to mumble again but she talks right over his response) Awe, there’s just something about this place on Christmas Eve. It’s magical… like there’s something special in the air. HAROLD (acknowledging himself) Sorry! RITA That is not exactly what I had in mind (shouting towards the kitchen) Bert, get in here and change this chili out. -

DOCUMENT RESUME ED 432 158 FL 025 920 AUTHOR Tellier-Robinson, Dora TITLE The Experiences of Portuguese-Speaking Families with Special-Needs Children as Related by the Mothers: An Ethnographic Interview Study. PUB DATE 1997-00-00 NOTE 279p.; Ph.D. Dissertation, New York University. PUB TYPE Dissertations/Theses - Doctoral Dissertations (041) -- Reports Research (143) EDRS PRICE MF01/PC12 Plus Postage. DESCRIPTORS Bilingualism; Elementary Secondary education; Ethnography; Interviews; *Limited English Speaking; Mothers; *Parent Attitudes; *Parent Participation; *Severe Disabilities; *Special Education; Surveys IDENTIFIERS *Portuguese Speaking ABSTRACT A study examined Portuguese-speaking parents' involvement in and feelings about their special-needs children's education. Ethnographic interviews were conducted, in either English or Portuguese, with nine Portuguese-speaking limited-English-proficient and bilingual parents (eight mothers and one father) of severely challenged children. The report describes the study's methodology and results, and presents nine family profiles, as interpreted from the parents' statements. Themes explored include: learning for the first time about the child's disability; meeting the special needs of the child; relationships with siblings; parent attitudes about their experience; language use in the family; concern for the children's futures; family adjustments; dealing with the medical profession; second language learning; and the meaning of the experience of having a child with special needs. A section is devoted to issues in the children's education, including the nature of schooling in the United States, language and cultural barriers, school placement, educational involvement in the home, parent involvement in school, the differing roles of fathers and mothers, and facilitating involvement. Implications for educational practice are discussed. -
Can't Take My Soul: Exploring and Illuminating the Spirituality
CAN’T TAKE MY SOUL: EXPLORING AND ILLUMINATING THE SPIRITUALITY AND SPIRITUAL ACTIVISM WITHIN BRITISH HIP-HOP by ALISHA EPPS JENNIFER SHOAFF, COMMITTEE CHAIR UTZ MCKNIGHT GREG AUSTIN A THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Gender and Race Studies in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2013 Copyright Alisha Epps 2013 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Hip-hop is a transnational musical genre that has historically affected the lives of marginalized youth in powerful ways across the “Black Atlantic.” By using a womanist framework of analysis, this thesis illuminates the ways in which three British hip-hop MC’s Akala, Logic, and Lowkey employ their music to enact spiritual activism. I explore how their music explicitly and implicitly centers on spirituality and seeks to break down the barriers necessary for spiritual awareness and growth through the awakening and/or transformation of consciousness. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am so grateful and blessed for the support of the following people: Jennifer Shoaff for your commitment and patience with me through this process. I’m thankful for your faith in me during the many times I felt like my circumstances were too overwhelming to complete this thesis; Utz McKnight for serving as a much needed mentor and encouraging me to go to graduate school. You have inspired me to believe that I can do anything I put my intention towards, and I am so glad that students have a professor like you to challenge and encourage them in ways that bring out the best in them; Greg Austin for your commitment under dire circumstances; Rashonda Smith for crossing paths with me in graduate school and developing such a deep connection with me that is sure to last lifetimes. -

Although romantic love is characterized as an emotion by a number of philosophers, psychologists, and neuroscientists, I show that it is not an emotion. Instead I argue that it is best categorized as a syndrome – a set of dispositions – affective, cognitive, conative, and bahavioral. -
Chapter 1 Introduction: the Sexual Figures of Kerala
Chapter 1 Introduction: The Sexual Figures of Kerala In the last two decades, with economic liberalization and the cultural impact of globalization, there has been much celebrating of India‟s new status as an ambitious, confident nation ready to take on the global stage. Both in the national and global realm there have been debates on the many markers of India‟s „progress‟. The agreement that post-90s India has finally moved from the era of the “prohibition of the kiss” to the era of sexual liberation fits into this progress narrative. Many well-known Indian news magazines and newspapers reiterate that the new generation of globalized India is sexually permissive and does not share the prudery of the pre-90s period. Nivedita Menon and Aditya Nigam in Power and Contestation: India Since 1989, argue that the new economies of desire and fluidity of sexuality are linked to the “unshackling of the imagination” (Nigam and Menon 2007: 85) due to the economic, technological, political and media-related shifts in the post-90s period. A 2006 print advertisement for tourism projects Kerala, a state in Southern India, as the ideal backdrop to kindle the fire of passion. This glossy packaging of sexual desire participates in the new liberatory aesthetics of sexualized images in global India. 1 Figure 1. Kerala Tourism Development Corporation advertisement: “Showers of Passion, Monsoon Honeymoon Holidays” (http://adoholik.com/2008/02/18/kerala-tourism-monsoon/) „Kerala, God‟s Own Country‟, as the blurb in the right-hand corner proclaims, beckons the urban tourist to discover sexual passion within its scenic landscape. -

“We Shall Go Forth”: A Musical Analysis of the Women’s Music Movement, 1969-1985 By Jessica Leann Freyermuth M.M., Kansas State University, 2010 B.M., Kansas State University, 2008 Submitted to the graduate degree program in Musicology and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Chair: Roberta Freund Schwartz Colin Roust Alan Street Ketty Wong Katie Batza Date Defended: The dissertation committee for Jessica Freyermuth certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: “We Shall Go Forth”: A Musical Analysis of the Women’s Music Movement, 1969-1985 Chair: Roberta Freund Schwartz Date Approved: ii Abstract In the wake of the social and political movements that defined the 1960s, the women’s music movement emerged as a means to cultivate an outlet for young lesbian musicians who saw themselves as equal to their straight male counterparts, but were unwilling to compromise their musical integrity in order to perform on major labels. The movement became a social experience, as women’s music artists would tour coffee shops, college campuses, and feminist bookstores to perform their woman-identified woman music to all-female audiences. The concerts eventually grew into larger events, such as the National Women’s Music Festival and the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival, which offered women of myriad backgrounds a safe space to gather as friends, family, and lovers. Within this cultural movement were musicians Margie Adam, Meg Christian, Alix Dobkin, Kay Gardner, Holly Near, Linda Tillery, Mary Watkins, and Cris Williamson.
