LITHONIA ONE CEMETERY: REVIVING A DEATH SCAPE By YI CUI (Under the Direction of Shelley Cannady) ABSTRACT Lithonia One Cemetery is an important historical African American cemetery in Lithonia, Georgia. Surrounding demographic changes, a lack of maintenance, and lack of attention from the public have resulted in a disconnection from the community and a loss of its historic value. This thesis seeks to discover appropriate restoration practices to improve the appearance of the cemetery which currently looks neglected. In order to do this, the thesis explores African American traditional burial culture, current visitor experience and attitudes toward the cemetery, and current conditions, features, and issues within the cemetery. Finally, it provides restoration guidelines for a future managing board and recommendations for two master plans to revive the cemetery within a historic context and rebuild the bonds between the cemetery and community. As studies have recently shown, a critical factor driving trade in this zone was local demand for foreign cloth; from the 1830s the majority of it was industrially made coarse cotton sheeting from Europe and America, which largely displaced the handwoven Indian originals. Employing archival, object, image and field research, this article demonstrates that until 1885 luxury textiles were as important to economic and social life in central eastern Africa, textiles known to the Swahili as ‘cloths with names’.
