The year 2010 was characterized by devastating flooding in Central and Eastern 9 Europe, including Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. This 10 study focuses on floods that occurred during the summer of 2010 in the Prut River basin, 11 which has a high percentage of hydrotechnical infrastructure. Strong floods occurred in 12 eastern Romania on the Prut River, which borders the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, and 13 the Siret River. Atmospheric instability from 21 June-1 July 2010 caused remarkable amounts 14 of rain, with rates of 51.2 mm/50 min and 42.0 mm/30 min. In the middle Prut basin, there are 15 numerous ponds that help mitigate floods as well as provide water for animals, irrigation, and 16 so forth. The peak discharge of the Prut River during the summer of 2010 was 2,310 m3/s at 17 the Radauti Prut gauging station. High discharges were also recorded on downstream 18 tributaries, including the Baseu, Jijia, and Miletin. High discharges downstream occurred 19 because of water from the middle basin and the backwater from the Danube (a historic 20 discharge of 16,300 m3/s). The floods that occurred in the Prut basin in the summer of 2010 21 could not be controlled completely because the discharges far exceeded foreseen values. -

AN ATTEMPT AT AN ETYMOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF PTOLEMY´S HYDRONYMS OF EASTERN BALTICUM Bandymas etimologiškai analizuoti Ptolemajo užfiksuotus rytinio Baltijos regiono hidronimus ANNOTATION The contribution analyzes four hydronyms from Eastern Balticum, recorded by Ptole- my in the mid-2nd cent. CE in context of witness of other ancient geographers. Their re- vised etymological analyses lead to the conclusion that at least three of them are of Ger- manic origin, but probably calques on their probable Baltic counterparts. The Danube River Protection Convention and the Environment Programme of the Danube River Basin aim to the complex assessment of water quality at the national level and of its development trends in order to substantiate the measures and policies to reduce pollution, plus other pri- ority objectives as the quantification of the heavy metals content (Lack 1997). The monitored sections in the study, respectively Turnu Severin - Calafat - Bechet were part of the TNMN network for tracking the Danube water quality (Harmancioglu et al. 1997).The heavy metals are from both the upstream of Turnu Severin and from the Jiu River. After the study conducted in 2007-2009 there were found in some metals significant amounts of nickel, copper, chromium, arsenic and lead in particular. Key words: monitoring, heavy metals, aquatic ecosystem, water pollution, the Danube INTRODUCTION Danube represents the biggest water resource for Romania being more than double (85x109 cm/year) in comparison with the inland water (river and lakes), which represents about 40x109 cm/year, but the possibilities of their use in natural regime are limited because of different technical reasons (Botterweg & Rodda 1999). Even so the importance of the Danube health is of major concern for Romania as well as for other countries. -

ADONIS:CE is applied commonly for business processes modelling, however, in this study case was applied in an ecology/biology sphere of interest. The authors acquired a Bitterling model which contained all of the identified habitat species’ necessities, the specific indicators that give good preservation status and the present pressures and threats. The keeping of the riverbed morphodynamics is especially necessary – the meanders existence is significant for the aquatic mollusc species which are existing in the inner U shape sectors of the lotic systems. The sectors, where the sand and mud are relatively fixed, give appropriate habitats for molluscs which is valuable for the reproduction of Bitterling. The preserving of the present water oxygenation and regime of liquid flows, and the prevention of the sediments deposition rate in the aquatic habitats are needed too for the molluscs’ existence. The sediments exploitation in these lotic systems should be realised in relation with the natural rate of renewal and at sites at a distance over five km between them. -

Cultural and linguistic layers embedded in Romanian oikonyms derived from hagionyms Oliviu FELECAN and Nicolae FELECAN Introduction In addition to constituting linguistic, geographical, historical, anthropo- logical, ethnographic, social and psychological markers, toponyms may also function as religious symbols, especially in those cases when the name of a place is derived from a hagionym. In the present paper, we focus on hagionymic oikonyms, a field of research that has been explored through various theoretical frameworks within Romania and which pro- vides fruitful insights into religious and cultural practices and attitudes. In the case of oikonyms bearing a religious background, “the proper name is a linguistic sign that designates a precise referent which can be located in time and space” (Billy 1995, p. 142, apud Vaxelaire 2005, p. 161, orig. French1) and whose position is transparent. Accordingly, our study lies within the broad domain of onomastics, highlighting specific aspects related to anthroponymy, on the one hand, and toponymy, on the other. With regard to Romanian anthroponymy, Puşcariu (1976, p. 298, orig. Romanian) has pointed out that: there is no continuity between the official names of pagan Romans and Christian Romanians. […] Christianity does not seem to have greatly affected old Romanian onomastics. In fact, apart from the two names Nicoară and Sumedrea (from Sâmedru = Sanctus Demetrius)2 Romanian does not evidence any other hagionyms revealing ancient phonetic structures. 1 The quotations marked as being originally in French or Romanian (indicated by “orig. We realised the analysis taking into account the following: the quality of scientific content, the didactic processing of scientific content, the quality of editing, and that of figures. Results showed that those text books, despite observing the current school curriculum, had the following deficiencies: insufficient didactic processing of contents, lack of relevant figures and of correlating maps with the written text, poor graphic quality and contents errors, the last one being a very serious problem. Solving those problems could be done through close collaborations between authors, reviewers, and the editing houses. Keywords: map, photo, schematic drawing, chart, criterion INTRODUCTION The object of our study was the analysis of five 4th grade Geography text books. The questions we asked at the beginning of our investigation were the following: What were the features of a school text book in order to be useful to the didactic process? Which was the profile of the analysed Geography text books? ISSN 2285 – 939X ISSN – L 2285 – 939X IOANA CHIRCEV, LILIANA CIASCAI, OANA-RAMONA ILOVAN The Romanian literature in this field is relatively poor in studies referring to the quality of school text books (Baranyai, Stark 2011; Lalau, 2014, Pop-Păcurar & Ciascai, 2010).
