STEVE BARTLETT Steve Bartlett began his journalism career in 1988 at The Western Star in his hometown of Corner Brook, Newfoundland. The work ignited a passion for storytelling and prompted him to return to Memorial University. He earned an arts degree, majoring in English and minoring in philosophy. He then attended the University of King's College, earning a bachelor of journalism and stoking his storytelling fire. Over the years, Steve has tackled every issue of importance to his home province and has interviewed everyone from the poor and impoverished to prime ministers to wealthy Middle Eastern Sheiks. Steve has worked for a number of years as a reporter, was editor of The @SteveBartlett_ Express newspaper in St. John's from 2001-2007 and served as managing editor of The Telegram from 2013 to 2018. He is now the senior managing editor of SaltWire Network, The Telegram’s parent company. He also writes a weekly column on journalism.

DREW BROWN Drew Brown is the editor of the Newfoundland and Labrador Independent. Hailing from Grand Falls-Windsor, Drew spent four years in pursuing a PhD in political science at the University of Alberta before leaving academia to pursue writing full-time. His bylines include VICE, CBC, Newfoundland Quarterly and The Guardian. He was voted “Best Local Journalist” by readers of The Overcast in 2017.

TIFFANY GOOCH Tiffany Gooch has worked extensively in the provincial government in Ontario, where she assumed increasingly integral roles in the Ontario Liberal Party Office, Constituency and MPP’s Offices, Minister’s Offices and the Office of the Premier. Often called upon as a speaker and

moderator for civic roundtables, consulting with numerous political campaigns, social enterprises and not-for-profit organizations on strategic communications, fundraising and business planning. Tiffany currently serves on the Board of Governors for the University of Windsor. She also previously served as Secretary of the Ontario Liberal @goocht Party Executive Council, as the Chair of The Reading Partnership steering committee, and six years on the executive of the Ontario Women’s Liberal Commission (federal and provincial). Tiffany is a political opinion columnist for the Star and has writing published in the Globe and Mail, Metro News, and CBC.

SALLY HOUSSER Sally Housser brings a wealth of experience to Navigator in media relations, crisis communications and issue management as well as campaign planning and execution. Most recently she served as Rachel Notley’s press secretary during the successful Alberta NDP provincial campaign. Prior to joining Navigator, Sally worked in a variety of communications positions for the NDP both federally and provincially. Beginning as a press secretary in Jack Layton’s office and in the NDP’s 2011 war room, she moved on to serve as Deputy National Director of the federal NDP during the 2012 leadership race, handling all media relations for the party during the contest. From , Sally went west to the Government of Manitoba where she served first as press @salhousser secretary to the Ministers of Justice, Hydro, Finance, Jobs and the Economy, and Advanced Education before taking over the position of Deputy Director of Cabinet Communications. Originally from Newfoundland and Labrador, Sally began her career in politics early as a parliamentary page in the House of Commons while studying Political Science at the University of Ottawa. After her studies she spent five years in London, England working for the Canadian High Commission before returning to Canada.

JESSICA LEEDER Jessica Leeder is an Emmy-winning journalist currently working out of Halifax, Nova Scotia as the Atlantic Bureau Chief for The Globe and Mail. She has operated out of bureaus in post-quake Haiti, Afghanistan, across Canada and the United States. She previously held staff positions at The Dallas Morning News, Toronto Star, and the Edmonton Journal. Her byline has appeared in the magazines Today’s Parent, Chatelaine, Report on Business Magazine, Reader’s Digest, Professionally Speaking and several others.

JANE LYTVYNENKO Jane Lytvynenko is a journalist with BuzzFeed News, where she covers online misinformation. Her work focuses on analyzing the spread of fake news, digital deception, and the rise of hyperpartisanship online. She has written about illegal online drug sales, cryptocurrency scams, and has uncovered networks of fake accounts using social media to dupe users and profit from the online ecosystems. Previously, her work has appeared in Maclean’s, CBC News, and Canadaland, where she was @JaneLytv a media reporter and editor.

STEPHANIE MACLELLAN Stephanie MacLellan is a senior research associate at the Centre for International Governance Innovation, a think-tank in Waterloo, Ont., specializing in digital policy and cybersecurity. She is also a former journalist who spent more than a decade working as an editor and reporter for newspapers such as the Toronto Star, The Hamilton Spectator and The Slovak Spectator, an English-language weekly based in Bratislava, Slovakia. Her work has been nominated for three National Newspaper Awards. She holds a Bachelor of Journalism from Carleton @smaclellan University and a Master of Global Affairs from the Munk School of Global Affairs.

SEAN SPEER Sean Speer is a Munk Senior Fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute. He is also an associate fellow at the R Street Institute and a fellow at University of Toronto's School of Public Policy and Governance. He previously served as senior economic adviser and special adviser to former prime minister . He has been cited by The Hill Times as one of the most influential people in government and by Embassy Magazine as one of the top 80 people influencing Canadian foreign policy. He has written extensively about federal policy issues, including personal income taxes, government spending, social mobility, and economic competitiveness. His articles have appeared in every @Sean_Speer major national and regional newspaper in Canada (including the Globe and Mail and National Post) as well as prominent US-based publications (including the Wall Street Journal and National Review Online). Sean holds an M.A. in History from Carleton University and has studied economic history as a PhD candidate at Queen’s University.

CIVIX CIVIX is national registered charity dedicated to strengthening Canadian democracy by fostering the habits of active and informed citizenship among youth. Our vision is a strong and inclusive democracy where all young people are ready, willing and able to participate.

CIVIX’s signature program, Student Vote, is a parallel election for students under the voting age, coinciding with general elections. Participating students learn about government and the electoral process, research the parties and party platforms, discuss relevant issues and cast ballots for the official election candidates.

CIVIX also offers initiatives between elections, including government budget consultations with youth (Student Budget Consultation), coordinated visits between students and their elected representatives (Rep Day), a news literacy program for students (NewsWise) and professional development opportunities for teachers (Democracy Bootcamp). www.civix.ca

Elections Canada Elections Canada is an independent, non-partisan agency reporting directly to the Parliament of Canada. Its ongoing responsibility is to ensure that Canadians can exercise their democratic right to vote in federal elections and referendums, and their right to be a candidate, through an open and impartial process.

Elections Canada has engaged CIVIX to deliver its Student Vote program for the federal election on October 21, 2019.

In addition, Elections Canada provides non-partisan resources and tools for learning, teaching, and engaging about democracy between elections. A suite of inquiry-based lessons promote student-centered learning and help grow active citizens. electionsanddemocracy.ca
