Subject: DNS & Domains Posted by Jayson Wonder on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 21:04:59 GMT View Forum Message <> Reply to Message Hi,

I am strongly considering your services. I am moving 5 sites with domains from a Shared hosting package to a VPS I guess. I think I want a value server and probably can configure most things except the DNS server or DNS configuration for Virtual domains / sites.

1) Is there any initial setup support for this type of situation or am I totally on my own for the initial config?

2) I'm new to VPS's so excuse the ignorance but do I need to have a separate IP for each domain or site I host?

3) Will I have access to my own SSL certificates or shared certificates? I am curious about this as some sites will run e-commerce software of some type.

4) Also I am confused about the control panels... Do I have access to this type of software on a value server or only on a Host-in-ABox?

Thanks,

Here are some answers to your questions:

1. The value plans are self managed so we don't install or configure apache for you, you'd have to do that yourself.

2. You do not need a separate IP for each domain you host, but you do need a separate IP for each SSL site you host.

3. We don't sell SSL certs, but you can buy them in many places on the net and install them on your server.

All users have access to our control panel, which will let you setup DNS and RDNS for your server(s), pay your bills, change your root password etc. Our control panel handles external setup items like that, but does not handle configuring your software for you, like apache or email services.

HIB, cPanel and DirectAdmin will configure Apache, PHP and email for you and in some cases (HIB) even install other software packages for you like or Wordpress etc.

My big concern or challenge will be DNS setup / config. If I could get some help in this area I would probably be able to handle the Value Server.

I understand that we manage these servers but is there any support avaialable in case someone made a major mistake?

Are there any guides / setup resources / documentation avaialable to customers to assist with the various set-ups such as DNS?

Thanks,

Subject: Re: DNS & Domains Posted by staff on Fri, 05 Dec 2008 08:43:07 GMT View Forum Message <> Reply to Message DNS can be completely handled by our control panel. All you need to know is the domain name and you can point it to your VPS in minutes.

You just type in the domain name and the IP you want to point it to on your server. All the entries are created automatically for you.

At your registrar, you then set ns1.vpsville.ca and ns2.vpsville.ca as your DNS servers.

Thats all there is to it.

This is what I am not clear on. If I can understand this I will be ready to move forward with a plan.

PS, if I spell check posts on this form it will create and error message and require a new message be posted..

Subject: Re: DNS & Domains Posted by staff on Fri, 05 Dec 2008 13:01:23 GMT View Forum Message <> Reply to Message DNS just points a domain name to an IP address. You could have millions of domain names pointing to the same IP, it would still be valid. The DNS server just makes sure that a client trying to connect to a domain name goes to the right IP address on the internet.

Once the client is hitting the right IP, its up to the software on the server to translate that request into the right webpage.

To actually host multiple domain websites on a server you would need to configure Apache (or your chosen software) to direct each domain name to its own directory. Thats called 'virtual hosting'. Then each directory could have its own distinct web pages. Thats how shared hosting (aka virtual hosting) works. There is no limit to how many sites can be on the same IP, you just need a different directory on the disk for each one.

For information on how to do that consult the Apache docs or one of many howto's on the net. Setup instructions need to be specific to the distribution and version of web server you are using.

Page 3 of 4 ---- Generated from VPSVille Community Forum by FUDforum 2.7.7 I assume the software such as cpanel, etc. will help to manage the set-up and config of these virtual hosts email. ftp, etc. also.

I will be purchasing an account sometime today! So far I am very impressed by the service, response time and info provided.

Now the hard part for me begins and that will be determine which Distribution and Software image to choose to run.... Any advice is this regards from staff or current users is appreciated. If it is of anyhelp I have some experience with home use experienece with Redhat and am using Fedora 9 in a small home office setup now but a few people have said that I should go with CentOS.

Is a fully licensed cPanel software an option for value servers?

Thanks,

Subject: Re: DNS & Domains Posted by staff on Fri, 05 Dec 2008 17:36:07 GMT View Forum Message <> Reply to Message Hi, cPanel only licensed on the cPanel plans, but you can install it yourself on a value plan if you purchase your own license.

Its all setup and ready to go on the cpanel plans.
