Paul Parmalee and Gerald Schroedl , were always willing to spare the time to talk about my research . I particularly enj oyed the visits Dr . Parmalee made to Dust Cave while I was there, discussing the fauna and collect ing salamanders from the bottom of the cave was truly enlightening. Dr. David Etnier was gracious enough to come onto my commi ttee late in the game and his volume (with Wayne C. Starnes) on the freshwater fishes of Tennessee was an invaluable aid for this research . Dr . Boyce Driskell is the person responsible for the whole topic of this dissertation and has been unfailingly support ive . The summers I have so far spent at Dust Cave, under his direct ion, have taught me mo re about archaeology than I learned in the ten years previous. Other Dust Cave crew members that have helped me through the years include Scott Meeks, who never complained about slogging through the mud "one last time." Nurit - iv- Goldman-Finn was a pleasure to work with and I particularly benefitted from her research on a regional perspective of Dust Cave . Jane Ellis taught me how to be a "real" woman during our work at Dust Cave . Al l of the students and other co-workers helped me in so many ways it would be impossible to summarize it all here . Finally, without the help of my fellow U.T.K. graduate studer.t , Sarah C. Sherwood , I would not have made it through all of those tick, mosquito, snake, and armadillo infested days at Dust Cave . Walker, Jr . for being so patient and comforting throug�out �he many long years it took to complete this research . -vi- ABSTRACT This research involves the faunal evidence from the site of Dust Cave in northwest Alabama . The site was occupied by prehistoric hunter- gatherers from 10, 500 to 5,200 years ago . Dust Cave is significant to archaeological research because it represents one of the earliest known , stratified Late Paleoindian and Archaic deposits in the Southeast . Test excavations were conducted at the cave from 1989-1994 and the materials for this dissertation were collected during this period . Re sults of the faunal analys is indicate that changes occurred in res ource selection, habitat exploitation , and natural environment through time . A shift from a concentration on avian species to �ammalian species occurred from the Late Paleoindian to the Middle Archaic periods . In addition, aquatic resource s, which were important to Late Paleoindian people at the cave , were much less important by the Middle Archaic. Utilization of species from open, ecotone , and closed habitats also changed through time . Closed habitat species, such as squirre ls and raccoons, were much more important during the early occupation of the cave . Ecotone species, such as rabbits and whitetail deer became more important during later occupations . A comparison of the Dust Cave fauna to several other archaeological sites reveals that Dust Cave is -vii - the only site in which birds are a significant resource . The faunal assemb lages from almost all of the other sites were predominantly composed of mammal remains . In addition, at Dust Cave the utilization of aquatic resources decreases through time while at other sites the use of aquatics increases . The Dust Cave faunal assemblage exhibits trends observed in other southeas�ern faunal assemblages such as an increase in the use of whitetail deer and an increase in species from ecotone habitats through time . In sum, information on faunal remains from Dust Cave has signified that Late Paleoindian and Archaic period hunter-gatherers living at the site practiced subsistence adaptations that were particular to regional habitat conditions . -vi ii- TABLE OF CONTENTS CHAPTER PAGE I.     HUNTER-GATHERERS IN TRANSITION: LATE PALEOINDIAN AND EARLY ARCHAIC ADAPTATIONS IN TENNESSEE Katherine E. McMillan, D. Shane Miller, Juliette Vogel, and Jonathan Baker INTRODUCTION The late Pleistocene to early Holocene transition in North America marks a period of rapid and often dramatic climatic and environmental changes that exerted a significant impact on the adaptive strategies of human populations living at this time of transition. These shifts included changes in climatic conditions (temperature and rainfall), biotic communities (megafaunal extinctions, vegetation changes, movement of species into new latitudes and elevations), and landscape changes (e.g. stabilizing waterways). As biotic community structures changed, human populations would have been forced to adapt their cultural systems to accommodate for these shifts. This chapter considers the cultural changes associated with this period of environmental transition in Tennessee. The Pleistocene-Holocene boundary encompasses the cultural periods labeled as the Late Paleoindian (ca. 12, 900 – 11,450 cal. B.P. / 10,800 – 10,000 rcbp; Anderson 2001) and Early Archaic (ca. 11,450 – 8,900 cal. B.P. / 10,000 – 8,000 rcbp; Anderson 2001). In Tennessee, the Late Paleoindian is identified by the presence of Dalton projectile points. The Early Archaic includes Early Side Notched (e.g. Big Sandy), Corner Notched (Kirk and Palmer) and Bifurcated Base (LeCroy, St. Albans, MacCorkle and Kanawha) projectile point types. These characteristic projectile point styles will be discussed below.

    The Incidence and Age Distribution of Osteoarthritis in an Archaic American Indian Population Florence Hantschke Chapman, Indiana University This investigation deals with osteoarthritic conditions in one of a series of five prehistoric American Indian populations living under vary- ing ecological conditions. It forms a sequel to a paper describing a Middle Mississippi series presented last year at the Anthropology session of the Indiana Academy of Science meetings. Although the Archaic series from Modoc Rock Shelter is very limited in the number of adult individuals that exhibit osteoarthritic changes, it nevertheless furnishes an indication of the incidence of the disease covering a time span from 3325 to 2765 B.C. The Modoc Rock Shelter is located south of St. Louis, in Randolph County, Illinois. About 12,000 B.C. the Midwestern climate became warmer and the great continental glacier started its last retreat. The edges of the Modoc Bluff were exposed when the torrents of the Mis- sissippi River began to subside and the river shrank into a smaller bed. The hunters found that the overhanging bluff protected them from rain and snow, and family groups used the shelter until time for the next seasonal migration. Dr. Winters (8) has written that the climate was much damper and cooler than it is now, when the peoples of the Archaic culture first appeared in this area. The climate gradually warmed until around 4,000 B.C. it was much warmer and drier than today and the great grasslands spread. The climate cooled again after 2,000 B.C. and by 1,000 B.C.
