The Institution, the Ethic, and the Affect: The Hillsong Church and the Production of Multiple Affinities of the Self Submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Bachelor of Arts & Commerce, with Honours in Sociology College of Arts & Social Sciences, Australian National University Matthew Wade 2010 1 Unless otherwise acknowledged in the text, this thesis represents the original research of the author: Signed:………………………… Matthew Wade 2 Acknowledgments I would like to express the greatest of thanks to my Honours supervisor, Dr Maria Hynes. Dr Hynes’ relentless positivity, gentle encouragement, and of course brilliant insight were absolutely invaluable. Warm thanks also go to Dr Rachel Bloul and Dr Joanna Sikora for their guidance, as well as my fellow classmates. Lastly, I give guarded thanks to the Hillsong Church, an institution that at once is endlessly fascinating, inspiring, and unnerving. 3 Abstract The Hillsong Church, based in Sydney, is the Australian exemplar of the ‘megachurch’ phenomena, characterised by large, generally non- denominational churches with evangelical, ‘seeker-friendly’ aspirations and adoption of contemporary worship methods. Given the increasingly large following the Church commands, there is surprisingly little scholarly research on Hillsong, particularly from the perspective of Sociology. This study seeks to contribute to a sociological understanding of the phenomenon of Hillsong by analysing the particular ways that its doctrine and practices evoke and respond to crises of the self in modernity. Hillsong does not rail against the developments associated with modernity, rather, the Church consciously evangelises in recognition of them, managing to both empower the individual and also act as a bulwark against more dehumanising elements of modern society. -

University Presbyterian Church Order of Worship August 7, 2016 | 10:30am 12th Sunday After Pentecost << INVITED>> “Oh Our Lord” David Leonard, Leslie Jordan & Paul Baloche Oh oh oh our Lord Oh oh oh our Lord How majestic is your name in all the earth We behold the breaking dawn The light that shines over everyone We look to you, we long for you Oh Lord We behold the rising sun The earth awaits, your hope has come We look to you, we long for you Oh Lord We behold the falling rain Like waters rise, flood this place We reach for you, we cling to you Oh Lord Oh, your name is a light in the darkness Oh, your name is the word of truth Oh, your name; oh, your name (repeat) Welcome “Blessed Be Your Name” Beth & Matt Redman Blessed be your name in the land that is plentiful, Where your streams of abundance flow, blessed be your name. And blessed be your name, when I’m found in the desert place; Though I walk through the wilderness, blessed be your name. Every blessing you pour out, I’ll turn back to praise; And when the darkness closes in, Lord, still I will say, “Blessed be the name of the Lord, blessed be your name; Blessed be the name of the Lord, blessed be your glorious name.” Blessed be your name, when the sun’s shining down on me; When the world’s all as it should be, blessed be your name. And blessed be your name on the road marked with suffering. -

SHOUT TO THE LORD! Music and change at Hillsong: 1996-2007 Submitted by Tanya Riches, BA (Psychology/ Political Economy) University of Sydney, MA (Theological Studies) Sydney College of Divinity A thesis submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Philosophy School of Arts & Sciences (Victoria) Australian Catholic University Research Services Locked Bag 4115 Fitzroy, Victoria 3065 Australia February 12th, 2010 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS A special thank you to Hillsong Church, particularly Pastor Brian and Bobbie Houston, George Aghajanian, and also those who assisted me in the formation of this thesis by participating in interviews, and providing their thoughts in order to help me better understand this community and its contribution to Australian music. Thank you also to Mark Hutchinson, Mark Evans, Andrew Harrison, and Sarah Aitkin for your encouragement – and for each playing a different but significant role in pushing me towards the bright light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you to Darlene Zschech. Thank you to my parents, Vivienne Riches and Rodger Riches. Thank you also to Tim Sheerman. Your heart for worship, and patience with the permanent stack of Hillsong music set up in the lounge room makes this achievement as much yours as it is mine. And to those who participate in the leading of Christian worship all over the world, in whatever denomination, may you continually seek to ―worship the Father in spirit and in truth‖ (John 4:23). ii STATEMENT OF AUTHORSHIP AND SOURCES This thesis contains no material published elsewhere or extracted in whole or in part from a thesis by which I have qualified for or been awarded another degree or diploma.
