ABSTRACT This thesis examines the relationship between violence and urbanity. Using Karachi, Pakistan, as a case study, it asks how violent cities are imagined and experienced by their residents. The thesis draws on a variety of theoretical and epistemological frameworks from urban studies to analyze the social and historical processes of urbanization that have led to the perception of Karachi as a city of violence.     BOOK REVIEW The Spoils of Partition: Bengal and India: Bengal and India, 1947-1967 Joya C hatterji UK, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (Cambridge Studies 111 Indian History and Society), 2007, 366 pp, Hardcover, S 45, R s. 895 Debjani Sengupta All those who work in the area ofPartition Studies have waited in anticipaion for JoyaChatterji's book on the Partition of Bengal (1947) titled The Spoils of Partition: Bengal and India, 1947-1967 (CUP, 2007). The book is a welcome intervention in the area, dealing with the behind the scenes political machinations, migration and other fall-outs of the vivisection ::>f I the country with a special focus on Bengal. Chatterji's study is important in many counts, not least because there is a serious dearth of engageljl1ent on the topic even after 60 odd years of India's independence. In the, sub­ continent, and particularly in India, Partition Studies have been to a1hrge extent Punjab-centric.The Partition ofBengal in 1947 has been a neg\ei::ted area in Indian historiography and we still await a comprehensive look at the effects of the Partition combining West Bengal, the North-East and Bangladesh. The 1947 div"ision meant massive population migration across the borders of the newly independent nation states of India and Pakistan. Fifteen million people crossed the newly defined boundaries; in West Bengal alone an estimated 30 lakhs of refugees entered by 1960. For over a million people, it was death in va rious violent encounters involving Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs. For an estimated 80 thousand women, in India and Pakistan, 'it meant abduction and sexual assault.

    It is my privilege to present the 48TH Annual Report of the India International Centre for the year commencing 1st of February 2008 to the 31st of January 2009. It will be placed before the 53rd Annual General Body Meeting of the Centre, to be held on the 25th of March 2009. I joined the Centre on August 1, 2008 and it has been a great experience to see it from the organising side as up to now I had been frequenting it as not even a member but a spousal member. We would all like to place on record our gratitude to the two outgoing Trustees, Mrs. Justice (Retd.) Leila Seth and Dr. R.K. Pachauri for the very valuable contributions made by them towards the successful steering of the policy and critical affairs of the Centre, and to Mr. Inder Malhotra, Cmde C. Uday Bhaskar, Brig Sukhjit Singh, Mrs. Vasantha S. Bharucha, Dr. S.M. Dewan and Prof. Mushirul Hasan, members of the Executive Committee, for the time devoted and the interest taken by them in important matters relating to the execution of policies. Mrs. Justice (Retd.) Leila Seth was untiring in her efforts to upgrade the Library and some aspects of her vision are already beginning to bear fruit. We are grateful to her for it.
