ISBN: 9781842779545. 303.6096 FRA08 100247 Nowhere in the world is the demand for peace more prominent and challenging than in Africa. From state collapse and anarchy in Somalia to protracted wars and rampant corruption in the Congo; from bloody civil wars and extreme poverty in Sierra Leone to humanitarian crisis and authoritarianism in Sudan, the continent is the focus of growing political and media attention. This book presents the first comprehensive overview of conflict and peace across the continent. The book's stress on the importance of indigenous Africa approaches to creating peace makes it an innovative and exciting intervention in the field. ** Africa - Conflict resolution Recent Addition (March), (No. 3), 2009 2 MEA Library, New Delhi 305.6 SOCIAL GROUPS Yen, Ching-Hwang The Chinese in Southeast Asia and Beyond / Socioeconomic and Political Dimensions.-- London: World Scientific, 2008. 457p. And yet the course of events has played havoc with the cherished assumptions of hawks and doves alike. The Cultural Contradictions of Democracy picks apart the intellectual design and messianic ambitions of the neoconservative American foreign policy articulated by figures such as Robert Kagan and Paul Berman; it casts the same critical eye on a wide range of liberal and leftist thinkers, including Noam Chomsky and Jürgen Habermas, and probes the severe crisis that afflicts progressive political thought. These include India’s relations with the US, the idea of a strategic triangle involving Russia, China and India, India’s nuclear doctrine and its impact on the emerging civil-military relations, India’s position of the ballistic missile defense system, India’s relations with Iran and Israel, and India’s quest for energy security. On almost all these issues, there is an intense debate in the Indian polity and the strategic community and how this debate resolves itself will in many ways determine the direction of Indian foreign policy for years to come. ABSTRACT This thesis examines the relationship between violence and urbanity. Using Karachi, Pakistan, as a case study, it asks how violent cities are imagined and experienced by their residents. The thesis draws on a variety of theoretical and epistemological frameworks from urban studies to analyze the social and historical processes of urbanization that have led to the perception of Karachi as a city of violence. It then uses the distinction that Michel de Certeau draws between strategy and tactic in his seminal work The Practice of Everyday Life to analyze how Karachiites inhabit, imagine, and invent their city in the midst of – and in spite of – ongoing urban violence.

The book is a welcome intervention in the area, dealing with the behind the scenes political machinations, migration and other fall-outs of the vivisection ::>f I the country with a special focus on Bengal. Chatterji's study is important in many counts, not least because there is a serious dearth of engageljl1ent on the topic even after 60 odd years of India's independence. In the, sub continent, and particularly in India, Partition Studies have been to a1hrge extent Punjab-centric.The Partition ofBengal in 1947 has been a neg\ei::ted area in Indian historiography and we still await a comprehensive look at the effects of the Partition combining West Bengal, the North-East and Bangladesh. The 1947 div"ision meant massive population migration across the borders of the newly independent nation states of India and Pakistan. Fifteen million people crossed the newly defined boundaries; in West Bengal alone an estimated 30 lakhs of refugees entered by 1960. For over a million people, it was death in va rious violent encounters involving Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs. For an estimated 80 thousand women, in India and Pakistan, 'it meant abduction and sexual assault.
