Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, President of the 66th Session of the General Assembly, on the Nobel Prize Winners Statement attributable to the spokesperson for the President of the General Assembly The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, warmly welcomes the decision of the Noble Prize Committee to award the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize to three distinguished women from Liberia and Yemen, in recognition of their struggle for women’s rights. President Al-Nasser believes that the award stands as a true testament to the great potential that women represent for democracy and peace. The President of General Assembly congratulates President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, Ms. Leymah Gbowee of Liberia and Ms. Tawakkul Karman of Yemen for their determined activism in support of women’s rights and peace, which has now earned them worldwide recognition through the Nobel Prize. These are heroic women who have sacrificed, worked hard and showed true leadership over many years to improve the conditions of millions of people, especially in their own countries. The award of the Nobel Prize to these remarkable women can only inspire many more millions around the world to work for women’s empowerment, human rights, peace and sustainable development – ideals that are at the core of the UN Charter. In fact, the UN Security Council recognized the contribution of women in peace and security by adopting Resolution 1325 in October 2000. The President of the General Assembly wholeheartedly applauds the three winners for their bravery and determination and extends his best wishes to them, their supporters and colleagues around the world, especially in Liberia and Yemen. .

It reduces emission equivalent to 15 lakh tonne of carbon dioxide per year. i.The 750 MW ultra-solar power plant spread over 1,590 acres. ii.It comprises three solar generating units of 250MW each located on 500 hectare land inside the 1500 hectare solar plant. iii. It is a renewable energy project to supply energy to customers outside the state. Indian Navy Completes “Operation Samudra Setu” by repatriating 3992 Indian from 3 countries i.On May 5, 2020, Indian Navy has successfully completed its 55 days and 23,000 kilometers long ‘Operation Samudra Setu’, which was launched on May 5, 2020 as a part of the national effort to repatriate (bring back) Indian citizens from 3 countries of Maldives, Iran, and Sri Lanka during the COVID-19 pandemic. ii.Under this operation 3,992 Indian citizens brought back to India, which was conducted by Indian Naval Ships (INS) Jalashwa (Landing Platform Dock), and Airavat, Shardul and Magar (Landing Ship Tanks). iii.This operation was undertaken by the Indian Navy in close coordination with Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and various other agencies of the Government of India (GoI) and State Governments. Administration of Barack Obama, 2011 Statement Congratulating the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Recipients October 7, 2011 On behalf of the American people, I congratulate the recipients of this year's Nobel Peace Prize: Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee of Liberia, and Tawakkul Karman of Yemen. Today's award honors three extraordinary individuals and sends a powerful message that the struggle for universal rights and human dignity can only be fulfilled with the full participation of women around the globe. President Sirleaf has inspired the world through her journey from a prisoner to the first female President of her country. She has helped Liberia emerge from years of civil war and make great strides toward reconstruction and a democracy that values the contributions of all Liberians, including its women. As a warrior for peace, Leymah Gbowee led her fellow Liberian women as they bravely stood their ground against a brutal dictator in a nonviolent struggle to bring peace to their country and realize a full voice for Liberian women. In Yemen, Tawakkul Karman and her fellow women activists were among the first to take to the streets this year to demand their universal rights, and despite the threats and violence waged against peaceful protestors, she has remained a powerful voice for nonviolence in a country where guns outnumber people. Each of this year's Nobel recipients have their own story, but their lives reveal a fundamental truth. Nations are ultimately more successful when all of their citizens can reach their full potential, including women. When women and girls have access to proper health care, families are healthier and communities are less subject to the ravages of disease and hunger.

Pray the Devil Back to Hell: Film Teaching Guide Mr. Frank Swoboda Boston Public Schools Prepared for Primary Source Summer Institute: Modern African History: Colonialism, Independence, and Legacies (2015) Frank Swoboda, Boston Public Schools Abstract: Pray the Devil Back to Hell is a documentary that tells the story of Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace, a women’s peace movement in Liberia that eventually ended the Second Liberian Civil War (1999-2003) fought between the army controlled by then- President Charles Taylor and the rebelling forces loyal to a variety of warlords. The women’s movement also contributed to the reconstruction of Liberia, including a transition to a functioning multiparty democracy headed by Africa’s first democratically elected woman president. The film relies on archive footage of Liberia during the civil war as well as interviews with major participants in the peace process reflecting on their work and achievements. The film shows how “ordinary” Liberian women from all walks of life united in their common hope that the war would end, used a variety of protest and civil disobedience strategies to call local and global attention to the suffering the war was causing, and successfully pressured government leaders and warlords to negotiate a sustainable and just end to the war. The film is noteworthy in that it does not shy away from the violence and horrors of the war (in fact, several scenes are rather graphic, showing or referencing child warfare, torture, rape and sexual violence, and other disturbing topics). At the same time, the film is engaging (even humorous in places), is full of inspirational moments, and carries a message of hope and resilience.

Unofficial translation Madam President, Luxembourg congratulates the Nigerian Presidency of the Council for organising this open debate on women and peace and security, which gives us the opportunity to take stock of the implementation of resolution 1325 (2000) and its follow-on resolutions. We commend you for having chosen to focus this debate on the role of women in mediation and in conflict prevention. I fully align myself with the intervention of the European Union. We thank the Secretary-General and Under-Secretary-General Michelle Bachelet for their presentations of the efforts undertaken by the UN system over the past year in the implementation of the women, peace and security agenda. We particularly welcome the invitation to this debate extended to the President of the Economic and Social Council and to the representative of the NGO Working Group on Women and Peace and Security: their perspective and expertise are particularly relevant to this debate. The award of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize to the Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, to her compatriot Leymah Gbowee and to Tawakkol Karman from Yemen is highly symbolic and recognizes the crucial role of women in the establishment and preservation of peace. We pay tribute to all the Tunisian, Egyptian and Libyan women who have so decisively contributed to shaping the Arab Spring. Even if the participation of women in the recent elections in Tunisia has not lived up to all expectations, we are confident that the Tunisian women will be able to assume their responsibilities, in all institutions and at all political and economic levels to contribute to the renewal of their country and that they will thus serve as an example to other countries in the region and in the world.

Statement by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict Margot Wallström THE 2011 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE LAUREATES AN INSPIRATION TO WOMEN ACROSS THE GLOBE (7 October 2011) I warmly congratulate the three laureates of the Nobel Peace Prize today. President of Liberia Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee, and Tawakkul Karman of Yemen are amazing women leaders, whose work continues to motivate us all. If only three of the world’s women can achieve all they have, imagine what can be done if half of the world’s population is allowed the rights women are entitled to. It is now over ten years since UN Security Council resolution 1325 was adopted, which recognises that women and children constitute the majority of victims of armed conflicts, that women and girls are affected by conflict differently from men and boys, and that women have a role to play and a right to participate in all levels of a peace building process. But still today, less than ten percent of all peace agreements are negotiated by women and less than three percent are signed by women. Women’s participation in peace processes needs to engage peacemakers, peacekeepers, peacebuilders and political leaders – not only women’s rights and gender experts. Allowing women access to the decision-making table remains a global challenge, and this is why today’s announcement by the Norwegian Nobel Committee constitutes such an important encouragement not only to women in Africa and the Middle East. President Sirleaf’s and Ms. Gbowee’s efforts have greatly helped to make the historically invisible crime of conflict-related sexual violence visible.
